Dark character has been a thing since at least Cecil in IV. Maybe not as heavy handed due to limitations but I do not doubt if they had the chance they would have gone for it even then. It's not something recent due to anime or anything. In fact most of the anime you're probably thinking of probably got inspired by older stuff you're unaware of.
Anyway thing is characters like Sora and Zidane are a rare fluke of presentation, for the most part people do not take to the happy go lucky or childishly oblivious MCs. They prefer them to have some sort of strife, excuse the pun, immediately identifiable since most adult audiences are ironically kind of shallow like that. They want less character depth and more character density they can identify composes the character.
See Zuko and Sasuke for example, mind Zuko isn't that bad in overall execution but he really, really hams it up with how conflicted he is early and later on and it drew him a lot more notice than Aang's quiet plight. Subsequently most people assume Aang is just some lucky kid with powers even though the series heavily illustrates he's seen and been through some shit and has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders the same as Zuko, but his nature makes it so he retains composure due to his upbringing instead of expressing too much grief.
Anyway what you should take from this is that a character should not be summed up just by their behavior or what's happening to them. It comes down to how they deal with it. If they just complain all the time and blame other people like Sasuke then sure it's shit, but since Noctis seems to have an objective he's carrying out much like Zuko there's a clear sign of maturity and responsible approach. He's just not smiling all the time about how things are and where they're going.

No I understand it. Squall is a lot less angsty than everybody thinks. He's had a history of being abandoned and had to toughen up from the age of like... 5 or so and then was inducted into a Child Soldier program which further stunted his social aspect. He also has moments of self-doubt which are also not angst, I would honestly class the only moments of angst he has are those moments when has a breakdown (which happens twice off the top of my head. Summons are literally gods. This was confirmed some months ago when the trailer depicting the titanic silhouettes over Lucis was released. The one featuring King Regis and young Noctis. I'll try to find the source, but Tabata made it very clear that summons are deitic in nature and summoners are further in tune with the ways of the universe than anyone could conceive.

Gotta say,after playing the demo Im a bit worried. fighting as young noctis was funny and cute. But while fighting as normal Noctis looked cool, it really didnt feel good just holding in the circle button to attack and square to auto dodge. At least with the button mashing in KH you get some sense of feedback when attacking. I hope its better in the actual game when you get more stuff to use, but right then I wasnt really feeling it. Everything except fighting (and the pretty bad frame rate honestly) felt pretty great and amazing.

So when comparing the Nifelhiem Base gameplay to the Platinum Demo, is it just me or have they not implemented the aerial combat from the former into the demo? It looks so smooth and KH-like in the demo and here it still feels like Duscae (though the weapon selection system already makes the combat eons better... all they have to do now is add skills back in, which probably won't be too hard).
