Super armor on 3c is pretty terrible and can be mashed out of. If you ever miraculously get a read with that, the guy you're playing against is awful. That said, c-moon can get a combo off it too, but it's pretty damn hard and relies on specific spacing and timing.

Just stick with it and you will get better, though I havent decided on who to play yet. I kinda wanted to play Fshiki but not sure. I think my Csion or even some of my scrub characters gave you more danger it seems. I suggest you should try other characters as well and dont rely on crutch nero.
Although i am kinda salty. I HATE NERO, even back in /jp/ casuals every second motherfucker played him and its disgusting. He is so good by design and even at low levels he has such a disgusting advantage. safe long ass normals, braindead easy combos, setups that dont go away even if you hit Nero himself, meaning you have to play really defensive EVEN if its my turn, good damage, etc...

The characters I used to play the most used to be Miyako and Riesbyfe. But I didn't even dare to try Miyako in my current scrub state. And when I tried Riesbyfe I realized that I couldn't even remember her basic moveset. And that was that basically.

yeah Miyako you defiantly need to hit the lab first. though you don't need the hardest combo to do, there are always a few easier ones. Roastbeef is easier on the execution. FRies is pretty solid and gets good damage, just need to get used to her relativly slowness. C and H ries are pretty trash desu. Not saying unwinable but Fries is much better and if you want something faster and go for another character altogehter (like miyako)

C - Melty blood "oldschool" Best metercontroll, reverse beat
H - Rushdown with special strings, no meter controll, reverse beat
F - GG/SF mode - Usually better normals, instant heal with meter, NO reverse beat meaning "normal" cancels abc into special

It's a spinoff of Tsukihime, a VN by Type-Moon, it has multiple characters from the VN and the story is set in the same universe. You don't really need to read the VN if you want to play melty but it definitely adds to the enjoyement.
If you're interested in the story then yeah you have to read Tsukihime, Kagetsu Tohya and Melty Blood ReAct.
