Rc car racing was the fucking bomb idk what the actual name was called though.

One summer I left my ps1 on at all times because I couldn't figure out how to save and almost beat it, but there was one race with turns so sharp I couldn't consistently do it. Raged so fucking hard and one day turned my ps1 off and lost all those hours....

I remember reading about this game in EGM or Gamefan back in the day and salivating over being to explore around in a 3D world. This was before Super Mario 64 kicked that door wide open. I was able to rent it and it was kinda cool at the time but I was never able to build up my character enough to kill mammoths for their tusks to build my glorious tower to the sun.

It's too bad they tried so much experimental shit with it. Even for fighters back then it plays like absolute shit.

Games with world dictionaries and design by AIC are hard to knock though. Plus it's got a god-tier soundtrack.

Why is it that the PS1's entire library seems to be comprised of obscure 10/10 gems that everyone knows but only played a handful

Hell yeah. I loved much detail about the world the put in Evil Zone.

Also all the characters being given their own anime-like episode styling.

Also Duke Nukem and Campbell of course.

You'll need a CRT though, it's an old-school rhythm game.

>>
>>332587198
The games aren't 10/10.

But a good number of them were 8/10, which is certainly good enough to thoroughly enjoy. The problem is that most people stuck with the RPGs, fighting, and racing at the time so most of the rest are terribly obscure.

Just seconding Silent Bomber. You're part of a penal unit sent to sabotage a giant warship on its way to destroy a planet and your weapon is remote explosives which you plant at your feet or attach to enemies by locking on to them. You can stack bombs to increase the blast radius and use special bombs to paralyse enemies, set ground on fire or pull everything into a black hole.

It was really hard, fun and quite fast from what I remember, even without going for the high score and it managed to fit a lot of variety into each mission for level design and how they used different enemies. It also had a multiplayer mode where you could play as some of those enemies and bosses from the campaign, which gets crazier with each mission and action movie cliche twist.
>>
>>332584006
Most of these are not obscure at all.
The only one I would call obscure is Kings Field.

This thing is the precursor to The action orientated Resident evil games. As well as shooting you can melee enemies and do dodges. The map tells you where to go next, first time I saw that substantially in a game.
>>
>>332583557
Sanvein is pretty fun. Time attack arena shooter.
Intelligent Qube is JP only IIRC, but it's fucking great, 3D puzzle action game about clearing waves of cubes.
Psychic Force is a fun aerial-based fighting game by Taito, kind of feels like its format would be a perfect candidate for a DBZ fighting game.
Also, it's not obscure (sold pretty well back in the day), but no one fucking talks about Street Fighter EX2+. Managed to be a better SF4 than SF4 actually was.

>>332584006
Omega Boost is pretty much a 10/10 game, other than the first three levels being way too fucking easy for no reason. Once the fourth stage kicks in, shit gets fucking real, and it's great. So fucking good.

>>332589319

I want to like that game more. It's an okayish Guardian Heroes ripoff, but it's not nearly as well designed (and I've had the game just not let me progress several times because it wouldn't unlock the screen).
Doesn't look too bad, it's just okay.

owning a Saturn in the US in the mid-90s must have been suffering, particularly early on
a good third of the Saturn games I own are JP only
almost all of the rest are Sega arcade ports (I think there's like, Burning Rangers (JP version, didn't feel like spending the cash for the US release) and Panzer Dragoon that I have that aren't ports, and that's it)

so, I had some damn fine games, but there's so much missing in the machine's library

I was a BoF fan growing up with 1 and 2 on the SNES.
>>
>>332604532
Nah, you found most of the content in the game.

The biggest aspects of Breath of Fire is the world with different species/tribes, and being a "classic" turn-based RPG style. You turn into some cool dragons and kill off gods at the end of the games, but it isn't anything amazingly outstanding. If you don't like the world, then there probably isn't much there for you.
>>
>>332605107
It's better on Sega Saturn

The PS version has a better framerate, more content, and more balanced gameplay though. Compared to the balls hard Saturn version and the easy 3rd person remake, it's well balanced. Plus the remake loses all of the atmosphere that makes it good. Even at the time, there were very few real-time first person ARPGs.

Now, if only it were translated; I saw somebody in /vr/ working on editing the PS version but no progress.

Would have to say Koudelka and Alone In The Dark.

The first for being an engaging horror-esque RPG that has a phenomenal soundtrack created by Hiroki Kikuta. The second for being a great horror game in general. I remember being terrified playing AITD more so than when I played any of the old RE games or even the OG Silent Hill.
>>
I was 12 when I played this and the story and environment were very abstract and the whole game made you feel sort of out of place. Off putting voice acting and the graphics in its day were top notch making this a pretty obscure game to play but it was damn good as I recall.

Been a good decade since I played it, but it was a very stripped down pseudo-RTS with crafting-before-it-was-a-thing gameplay, grab boxes and stack them in set configurations to get better weapons and shit before the enemy does to win, great artstyle and voice acting, shit's offensive as fuck, but seem to recall it being a bit unbalanced. Had my copy stolen when my flat got robbed, probably the only reason it never got played again.

Can anyone ID a PSX game for me?

I remember it was a game that my mother brought back from Bali, back when consoles were chipped etc.

It was a side-scrolling beat-em-up / shooter, with 3d character I believe, I vaguely remember the setting being a city at night. One level was on the top of a moving train in an underground subway.

Hope that's enough info
