With what little authority that carries, I am going to say that, as an oldfag (hell, ancientfag by this point.) I never thought new users were a problem, provided you lurked the proper amount (always moar) and made it a point to fit into the culture instead of dragging your hangups and idiocy from whatever other site you came from.
That is the real problem with /v/ and arguably 4chan as a whole. People stopped lurking and started dragging their shit in here. Certain ways of speaking, tastes, and other cultural tics started coming in by the truckload and others started thinking THAT was the right way to act. Thus the culture of /v/ shifted and transformed, which while in theory good and healthy, ended up resulting in a board culture that is essentially baiting and trying to come up with quippy oneliners to get replies, rather than any meaningful discussion.
Sure, /v/ was always abrasive and stupid, but when we talked about videogames, we knew what we were talking about, had substantive argument, and with a few exceptions (i.e. the Halo and CoD crowd) didn't give a shit about your tastes. We gave each other shit, insulted each other, called each other faggot, etc, but at the end of the day we were still bros. Console Wars were a joke that got adopted by idiot fanboys and now we have a board that is mostly comprised of people who hate videogames and hate one another.
If you want to make /v/ a good board again (and no, "it was never good" is a fucking meme, not the honest truth) then you will try to enforce a culture of lighthearded ribbing, substantive discussion, and stop taking the fucking bait.
