I'm too tired to sort out all this drama. It seems that, in order to get a real understanding of it (rather than just believing someone's lies), I'd have to read an actual fucking essay and then dig through a few weeks of tweets. Fuck that. So I'm not going to pretend that I know the whole story.
But if this woman was representing a company on Twitter (especially a family-friendly company like Nintendo), she should not have been tweeting anything even slightly controversial at all. Everything she wrote had the potential to effect Nintendo's image, and having Nintendo's name associated with this stuff was reason enough to fire her. I know she didn't write the essay as a Nintendo employee, but all of her tweets on the subject were written as a Nintendo employee. She should blame herself and no one else for those.
By the way, this doesn't just apply to PR and spokespersons. If you're a well-known employee of a company, you don't go on Twitter posting shit that might cause trouble, even if it's a joke.
I guess people who have never been employed at a real company wouldn't understand. But as an employee of a big company like Nintendo, I absolutely fucking guarantee she went through mandatory training SPECIFICALLY about protecting the company's image and being professional in her online interactions.
