She had plenty of time to defend herself and calm everything down, but no, she chose to just ignore it all and look what happened.
The reason why she was taken out of Nintendo is a logically reasoned one that doesn't even involve gamergate that much. It's not that she had an opinion, it's that she had an opinion that 1) wasn't safe for where she worked and 2) She didn't even try to fix everything herself, she just expected it all to blow over, and with her ignorance she became terrible publicity for Nintendo.
