Me and my friends used to spend hours chatting shit and trying to get out of bounds in campaign and custom games.
Then Bungie completely killed it. It was a sign that they were moving away from the ''here's a game, have fun with it'' philosophy to ''Here's how we want you to have fun with this game''.

A bunch of humans were in a bunker with infinite ammo needlers, and they had to keep pushing back the super slow but invincible purple zombies that were slowly coming to get them.

I'll always remember how I got overkill. It was the day before Halo: Reach came out, and everyone was scrambling to finish up achievements. I wound up in a game on Snowbound where everyone was wanting to do achievements, except for one guy who just wanted deathmatch. We were taking turns shooting each other for Two for One, the Spartan laser achievement. For some reason, 3 guys line up for me instead of just 2. As I'm charging up, the party pooper, who we were all ganging up on, respawns near us and throws a grenade to steal kills/misalign the other players. Somehow I managed to get the shot off, unlocked two for one, then, even with my shield drained from the grenade, turned and blasted his stupid face with the Splaser for the overkill. It was glorious.

As autistic as this sounds, we held a final send off to them (and Halo 3) around a year ago before we deleted our save data.
We had 14 players and 2 guests (who weren't playing) and we played all the gametypes they loved one final time.
We even did a 14 gun salute for them in front of the guest accounts.

MCC community is practically nonexistent, which really is a shame. I was really looking forward to reliving it again, but of course the launch was terrible and the game is still kind of buggy and only a few of myfriendshave an xbone. Even though Halo 5's Forge is pretty slick, the game is just missing so many gametypes and features, that it's just not the same; not only that, but the halo community is much smaller now. The glory days of Halo 3 andReachcustom games are over.
Ultimately what I think killed the halo 5 custom game/Forge fanbase was a lack of Forge at launch, as well as a file share and file browser.

The OG Halo series was fucking amazing and I can't believe what 343 has done to it.
Old-school Bungie knew what they were doing. They focused on making a fun future war game, with all the cooler sci-fi stuff and SPARTAN lore in the books, so the casuals didn't need to care about the cool shit and the fans could read that shit to their own content. They put Forerunners in as cool, mysterious background forces, not the main fucking bad guys. They made multiplayer games where over a million people played every day for half a decade, while pretty much every non-COD shooter today can't even keep 50k people past it's first month (Including 343 Halo.) Sure, Halo 5 is an okay shooter, but Halo games had a unique style of gameplay, that wasn't about going fast all day every day. The maps were extremely freeform, with almost no invisible walls or boundaries that didn't make sense within the map itself. Getting mined on Sandtrap was fucking amazing compared to being yelled at to "GET BACK TO THE MAP IN 10." And Bungie was a part of the community, not like most companies pretending to care, they were intimately involved with the content creators and strived to help them, and ACTUALLY launched Machinimas as a form of entertainment.
The original Halo Series is the Star Wars of the 2000s, because it was an amazing spark that launched an amazing franchise that turned to shit when they decided to milk that cow for all it's fucking worth. Good job on killing it's soul, 343.

My favorite matchmaking memories were when the two teams would stop trying to win and would just mess around.
That glitch where the Banshee blows up and it looks like you're surfing happened and everyone just pushed the guy around and rode him for the rest of the game.

Mainly the spawn system in that game, it just worked so perfectly. With enough skill and timing, you could choose exactly where your buddy would spawn. Splitscreen also gave you a pretty wide field of view, and you could just spectate your buddy throughout the entire game.
The starting weapon, despite being designed around a controller, was difficult enough to use that its maximum kill time wasn't always achieved, and power items spawned frequently enough. It wasn't perfect, but I haven't had as much fun playing any other 2v2 game.

The AAA model is mostly fire and forget. Keeping a fanbase is not necessary, you only need to keep people around for the season pass, and people only get that during the launch because Season passes offer so very little. This is why Battelfront is dead.
There is a lot more competitiveness in that area than there was before, a lot more.
MS did a great marketing job with it and became a phenomenon which lasted 2005 to 2010. Between the shift of focus to kinect, and 343i arrival, it halted. Fans started leaving, and between reach and other stuff even the most dedicated fans got pissed at MS.
On the social aspect fans got older, got to college, and are now in the wonderful world of adulthood, and all that implies.
Younger people stick around and got Halo 5.
Gamers younger than them are the minecraft, smartphone generation gamers who have never tried them Haloz except for the soulless mobile abominations featuring fucking Sarah Palmer, she is the definition of an abrasive character.
