What other games did Undertale rip off? Cave Story, I believe.
personally . i think undertale ripped off many games, the combat system for example came from final fantasy.

Undertale isn't a game about anything. The story isn't significant, the characters aren't, the setting isn't. Not even the enemies: it's all a postmodern collage of gaming from the RPG to the FPS to the online webcomic. It uses its influences like any great postmodern art to craft a new individual examination of their overarching narratives, values, ideas. It casts shadow upon such contrivances as killing every enemy and multiple playthroughs in an effort, like Berio's Sinfonia for orchestra and eight voices, to goad the industry into moving forward.
But again, I don't expect you guys to get that. You're still in high school.

Not that anon, but I don't think the term "mental gymnastics" applies, he just dismissed his post in a really lazy way, mental gymnastics is when you use a really convoluted and, in most cases, contradicting reasoning, it hardly applies to "nah, is just nonsense"

It uses tumblr memes as central character motivations and interests.
Its three routes are "what if you didn't kill anyone," "what if you only killed who you felt like you had to" and "what if you killed everyone," which is hardly a novel concept, it just hadn't been a central concept of a game before.
Almost every idea or design philosophy is borrowed from another popular game.
It is hardly 'postermodern.' It was just some guy's pet project that blew up, heavily inspired by Earthbound, Homestuck and Touhou.
