Holy shit this is gold. Since /v/'s opinion on VR was "gimmick" and "eye cancer" I've been to /r/Oculus for some news and discussion.

But now when Rift has launched people have gotten their hands on them and found out lots of problems, including:
>halo effect in lenses
>shitty FoV
>uncomfortable straps
>Oculus Store being FB 2.0 and wanting your full names and info
>closed platform by default
and so on

Redditors have gone crazy. The fanboyism is worse than here and everyone complains like
>"the fov is so small, what do I do? :("
>"my review: lots of problems but I love it!"
>"cancelling my order"
>"they're lying, it's perfect"
>"let's just calm down here"
>"please let's act like adults"

So now that Rift is proven to be shit, we're going to wait for Vive to come out for consumesr and then buy it right?

It's one of those things people try once or two times and go wow! Totally amazing and then just go back to doing things like before because at the end, when they hype blows off, its more of a chore than something practical, kinda like the failure of 3D TVs.

I hope it dies, im being honest.

Facebook might have killed the entire momentum for VR by pushing Oculus ahead of the Vive at any cost

The roomscale and 1:1 motion controls is what ties it all together, make it more than just playing a game with a monitor on your head - the effect of presence being the jump from 2d to 3d everyone's expecting from VR

By elbowing their way in with something that is not complete in the feeling of presence - and exploiting their name to make their brand the default brand in eyes of the normalfags we now run a real risk of the WiiU effect among normies

I've already seen people even here on /v/ say that the Vive isn't for them because they don't really care for the roomscale stuff, even tho the Vive with it's motion controls and 360 degree motion may still be better than the Rift at these things - like the idea's been spread that full immersion VR is the "other" stuff

The Rift itself is actually fine, unless you're into E:D, because that lens flare in white-on-black scenes really looks annoying

The wii is a different beast. What was the future of that technology beyond selling consoles?

Virtual reality has been a goal for generations. Its not just about strapping a monitor to the head. It encompasses simulating a world and replicating as many senses as possible.

But the contrarian /v/fags and their hateboners can only dream of it failing so they can feel smug playing 2D games for another decade.

Blatant lie.
Palmer Cuckley wanted VR to be mainstream since Rift's inception. He talked about the "350$ ballpark".
Than Valve revealed its revenge plan to punish Oculus for sell out to Facebook, with the many research and data Valve donated to Oculus. At this point Cuckley shitted his pants and realized Valve would have released the best headset and done a U turn about the price/value.

At the moment the Vive is objectively the best hmd, no matter if you believe or not in VR. In a 800$ package you have everything you need for a "complete" VR experience and not a glorified 3d monitor.

To;dr: Valve nailed from the start the first gen VR would have been a niche market and worked to release a "complete" experience.
Oculus will release the rift with a Xbox controller... and then you will have to buy the motion controllers to "enjoy" a seated experience.

Pathetic Cuckley get tucked in the ass and creampied in the mouth by HTC Vive.

The Giant Bomb Stream pretty much showed how most people will react to VR.

>One or two games really sucked them in
>The rest they were questioning why they were even on VR
>They spent the better part of their time looking bored and ripping into it
>They got so bored they started screwing around with video effects
>One of them even says the novelty wears off right around a week after getting it
>They start complaining how most of the games are basically slightly interactive films with pretty imagery
>They start wanting more actual influence
>Motion sickness seems to force developers into making games that way
>Normal camera controls with a joystick while playing seem to make people incredibly disoriented

As of current it's a fucking flop.
>>
>>332507508
Doing a control differently isn't a revolution of technology.

I can't control my Autism Truck Simulator with my foot unless I have a pedal. That doesn't mean a pedal isn't a useless gimmick.

I can control all these things with a regular ass gamepad just fine though. How does neck control add anything of value? It's literally a gimmick.

That's the problem I'm seeing with both the Oculus and the Vive, developers do not seem to have questions clue how to make a normal game playable using this tech. Apparently any form of artificially applied movement like the jostling of the camera in GTA5 will be a one way ticket to puking your guts out. Also apparently freely moving around with any chance of sudden drastic changes without moving does something similar.

As a result all of the developers instead of spending the time trying to find a safe way to manage camera and movement without making people sick have simply went the safe lazy route of having you teleport around or simply having the game run on rails at a set pace.

I've said since day one those motion controls will never take off.

The only way that will work and keep people interested is if you just keep making a bunch of small games to play on bursts much like Wii Sports.

A huge chunk of gamers have work and outside lives, they are tired when they come home, the last thing they want to do regularly is run around their living room frantically waving their arms around to play some game while running the risk of knocking things over or breaking them.
>>
We have the headset, we just need the control methods. Oculus has already demonstrated that VR with a traditional controller is a gimmick at best.

Lens flare?

Is this some new release only stuff?

E:D dark backgrounds were fine in the DK2, well aside from black smear and when it shit itself.

Also I assume black smear hasnt been fixed and is simply being taken as "normal" now considering I never hear a word of it
>>
>>332508832
>but it's the future for you if you have an interest in those two genres
Except it isn't. Cockpit games are far better with a single high resolution display because 3D depth adds nothing to the genre, and being able to see what your hands are doing is a massive fucking deal when you've got a few button boxes or controls that aren't directly under your fingers at all times, like half the start-up procedures for sim games.

I agree completely, the lack of investment on a AAA flagship game was a major mistake.

Gimmicky games make for "gimmicky" reviews.

You cut out 20 of these small launch titles for one must-have VR exclusive and there would be serious fervor to buy the tech.

Fucking Valve could do better as well, noone expects a HL3 to be developed in time but at least have a major game in the oven that you can tease as a VR flagship.

And what you're not understanding is that this is just a far more expensive system that doesn't work as well. The downsides of decreased resolution and being unable to see your hands are massive compared to the benefit of "dude, it's more NATURAL".

>>332509204

What do you expect from a technology that does nothing except improve immersion?

It's not disruptive at all, in fact it's the opposite of disruptive.

The real reason VR is shit is because the developers and fanboys were so in love with the smell of their own farts that they thought VR would sell without games. Or that people would buy a machine without games for $599.

See: Sony circa 2006

I agree, really these fucks just assume that hype turns into profit at an 1:1 rate

Oculus started with wanting a standardized VR headset for PC and ended up as a facebook helmet, became a publisher of all things, produced mobile toys and a store, and have gotten literally not one fucking game worth a shit while doing all this.

Now they go out with a "hurr 30 games" most of which are mobile level tech demos, converted gearVR jokes and a few games to which VR only adds the 3D effect, or ones that have already flopped.

Do the fucking maths, kids. You can resolve individual pixels on a 1080p screen when it's taking up around a tenth of your total vision.

Extrapolate that out, and you'll realise that the rift and others like it will require a 10800p screen. About as crazy as we can get currently is 8k, which is a 4320p screen, and you won't see those on phones any time soon.

I've heard the math a few times - and I know its a tough call like starting at 8k, but regardless I make the minimum entrypoint where seeing the physical pixels is impossible even with no motion going on on the screens.

As an avid flight simulator player I hope with every atom of my being that VR headsets become widespread.

Being able to look around your cockpit without worry about the size of your monitor(s) and easily keeping an eye on your surroundings is absolutely a must.

In that regard, all naysayers should be tracked down and tortured until their minds are broken and they swear loyalty to VR for the rest of their lives. Nothing and no-one should stop the success of VR.

The mad hype over roomscale VR is probably what will kill VR gaming. It's great, but it means that you have to cripple BASIC mechanics of games to compensate.

You either have to have games confined to small rooms, or have a locomotion technique that is utterly retarded. Like teleporting.

It's like nobody played HLVR when that came out. That was perfect.

You arent really making very good points
Yes, decoupled looking and aiming is one thing - but its not really "useful", its immersive and only plays with motion controls - which are again immersive, but low performance.
A single buttonpress to reload as opposed to an entire set of motions.

I would also not recommend spinning around in your computer chair - first you'd still be fucktons slower than a mouse, second it'll make you sick, third the cables will be choking you.

VR is simply a completely different field compared to regular vidya or FPS games.

The only overlap happens in simulators with cockpits - and even there, screens and a trackir will be more 'effective', while VR will be the more immersive choice.
