Player and asset creator here (developer in the artistic sense). Yeah - no.
The dirty little secret of the industry is that most devs are actually really horrible gamers. Further - very few of them actually have the ability to "big picture" it as far as making games is concerned. Why do you think so many AAA titles feel like carbon copies year to year? Innovation is rare - Overwatch is essentially a Blizzard polish of TF2 meets Time Splitters. It's rare because original ideas that work are rare.

I'll admit there are a ton of gamers who have no idea what they are talking about - but there are a good portion who would run circles around the established industry if they had the coding or asset creation chops.
The "hurr durr - gamers are just armchair devs" is a pretty dumb meme and the industry is currently in a stale tepid shite state because devs actually don't listen to "some" gamers enough. AAA is turning into hollywood where no one wants to try anything different because of "risk". Sucks.

but gamers mostly don't complain about that sort of thing - The "Gamers need to STFU" subject matter tends to be about things like gameplay, sometimes themes or plot structure - Pro tip. Most Game devs are no more qualified in those subjects and more often less so than the "no lifer" who has been playing games 8+ hours a day for the last [x] years.

While I don't work for Blizzard - I assure you the whole Overwatch/Tracer pose thing has little if anything to do with gaming, art direction or game design and everything to do with the PC police and scoring "points". Blizzards mistake was trying to score points that just so happen to line up with the SJW's. I don't think they meant to target SJW's but I'd bet my rig that there was internal SJW/PC/Feminist pressure to "make a statement". People in the industry (especially women who have been in it a while) are so sick and tired of the PC bullshit - but we can't do anything, at least not in the big companies. Ever work for a large company with an HR department? - well take all the traditional bullshit PC crap you have to deal with in that sense - and triple it with "narratives" and "memos" and "target audience awareness meetings" - I'm not high up so I usually get the second hand reports on this stuff from my project lead - but it's the same corporate BS chasing demographics and what have you. It's not that companies mean to betray established gamers - they just see it as though "we already have that market - can we get other markets" - and it DOES influence things in game design - and not for the better. See: Dark souls difficulty, vs. its popularity, vs. the fail that is most of the watered down "Accessible" tripe that are AAA games. AAA is essentially trying to get market share from the causal mobile phone market- the SJW shit Blizzard is attempting is sort of that.
Take a step back and look at overwatch - look at hearthstone before it - they are essentially targeting "mobile" and "casual". Blizzard knows it can't compete directly with CS:GO - but it can cannibalize the more casual side of TF2
