The beat em up genre in it's "prime" was always bloated with shit. Even the big name games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage were just a mess made to eat your quarters.

Persistent RPG mechanics are. Short games with ability and stat distribution options that reset on game over are great - mess around with character builds, incentivize replays, no power bloat.
