And instead of offering to make you stronger with blood, they try to kill you by giving insight
>>332463531
I don't think they're actually trying to kill you, I think it's an accidental side effect. I forget where exactly, but I distinctly remember a description mentioning that "Old Ones are sympathetic by nature" and just want to help, but our fleshy mortal bodies can't really handle their help.
>>332463859
Then perhaps they offer you insight, inadvertantly killing you. Either way it's a cool contrast

I want to fuck it, the singing actually gets me hard as fuck.
It's a great concept and I love their unsettling singing. The only problem is how long the frenzy bar continues filling up after you've already killed them.
Even with the highest frenzy resist gear in the game and no insight, you'll still either have to chug a sedative or just take the frenzy damage. I farmed those fuckers a whole lot and it's just silly how long the bar keeps filling up.
You can use the parry exploit to avoid the damage, but there's a fucking problem when you can't kill an enemy without using an item, taking a huge chunk of damage, or using an exploit.

>>332467442

>>332462013

>>332467724
How is it dumb? I like the universe, I like the lore, I like the contents of the Souls games. I want to see it make a transition to 2D gameplay. I think it would work well. What's dumb about that?
>>332462013
These enemies are parry tutorials and nothing more.
They only have one attack and can't damage you if you visceral them at the right time.
>>332467893
>can't stagger their grab
just shoot them when their "arms" are fully widened
and if you're really having problems, just put on the most frenzy resistant hunter garb and the anti-frenzy rune.
>>332468259
>They only have one attack and can't damage you if you visceral them at the right time.
yes and if you fuck up you will most likely die due to frenzy
>>332467925
Your acceptance of Bloodborne shows you are open to new universes and lore, but you apparently reject Salt. A game that borrows heavily from Souls games and does its own thing with it. I say it is dumb because if your brand loyalism wasn't getting in the way you probably would have rejected Bloodborne on the same principle.
>>332467893
You can stagger their grab with 2-handed weapons like the kirkhammer and holyblade
>>332468442

>>332468586

So much wasted potential.

>>332469593

Yes anon, but their grab and bite does damage too.
They're not hard to kill at all once you understand how they work. I was just pointing out that they can be intimidating when you first encounter them. I haven't died to a winter lantern in like 9 months.
>>332469951
I know, but I'm saying that as long as you aren't hit by their insanely slow and telegraphed bite and grab and only suffer the incidental frenzy buildup from their spooky dicksucking song, you won't die.
>>332468783
bullshit. really?
>>332468539
Not him but S&S is fucking shit anyway.
I never noticed that their giant heads were made out of Messengers before. I did see that the underside of those squid things in the Nightmare Frontier were covered in Messengers though.
I thought maybe the implication was supposed to be that this is why the Messengers are on your side. Like the item lore talks about how the Messengers worship the Hunters, but don't ever say why. I suppose that if the Messengers are on the bottom of the food chain of the Nightmare realms then it would make sense that they'd try to help and/or idolize guys that go around slaying Nightmare monsters.

>The immense brain that Mensis retrieved from the nightmare was indeed lined with eyes on the inside, but they were of an evil sort, and the brain itself was terrible rotten.
So it appears it's more like these things are evil shits, but if you best them, and seek out their power, they won't reject you. Probably why Micolash could house a gigantic evil as shit Old One in his nightmare.

Salt and Sanctuary. Ignore the shitposters, it's actually a really good Metroidvania-style Soulsborne. It's got amazing level design and tight gameplay, a fairly original story (which is told in Souls style, though snips of dialogue and item/enemy descriptions), and plenty of variety in playstyles. The devs (of which there are only two) captured the feeling of danger and "just a little more then I'll go back to the bonfire" of Souls while maintaining the curiosity and need to explore of Metroidvanias. The art style was mentioned, and while I didn't mind it, that's a subjective point. The major set pieces look fine and they laid the bloom on a little thick; the backgrounds could use a little more detail but overall I thought the game's look meshed with its style. The music is very barebones, I will admit (I recall 3, maybe 4 tracks other than ambient noise), but I think it's a little more forgivable as the devs obviously couldn't spread their assets too thin and chose to focus on gameplay and level design, which more than make up for the negatives. One last thing is that the leveling system can feel a little restrictive coming from Souls as it opts for a skill tree with nodes that give stat points and other things rather than selecting stats directly. I could go on, but I'm sure there are plenty more qualified people to write an actual review of the game.I didn't mean for this to end up being a mini-review in the first place, I just wanted to provide an alternative viewpoint to the negative ones earlier in the thread.

If I wanted to do nothing but mindlessly grind I'd play Diablo or Disgaea. I wouldn't mind them returning if there wasn't a bigger focus, you didn't have to grind for materials to do the root chalices, and gems didn't make a return, though. Randomly generate gem shit was garbage and killed the PvP.

>>332462013
I've already said it before, but I really feel like they should change how Frenzy works in order for it to be less of a chore to deal with. Two changes:
1. Either reduce prices of Sedatives from 4,600 to 1,000. OR change its effects so that it gives you like 15-20 seconds of complete immunity from Frenzy build-up.
2. Frenzy build-up should stop when you kill the opponent that gives you Frenzy. And in the case of Mother Brain, it should stop the moment you hide behind an object.
If these two changes come into effect, I honestly wouldn't mind if Frenzy did as much damage as it does.

Someone care to educate me on what the dream is? Are people in the dream real? Why does Gerhman killing you release you from the dream and why was he crying? Its not his is it? Because when you kill Micolash doesn't the nightmare end? Is it like a playground where you can fuck things up forever? Does Gehrhman even die or does he just wake up?

>MY GUIDING MOONLIGHT
Anyone else disappointed with how short, simple and small some of the areas are compared to Central Yharnam?
Lecture Building, Byrgenwerth, Upper Cathedral Ward and even Nightmare Frontier and Nightmare of Mensis are all short and small and simple compared to Central Yharnam.
Lecture Building takes like 3-4 minutes to casually stroll through. Byrgenwerth is just 4-5 bugs, a centipede, a brokenly overpowered NPC hunter and Rom.
Upper Cathedral Ward looks pretty and spooky on the outside, but once you get it, it's just a place with some werewolf variants and some annoying brainsuckers. You fight Celestial Emissary and literally walk 10 seconds to get to Ebrietas.
Nightmare Frontier is a relatively linear runway to Amygdala. It only looks big because of its open space nature. Otherwise, it is pretty short. The only hard part is getting the optional loot at the poison swamp. And the two Winter Lanterns.
Same with Nightmare of Mensis. It's a long Frenzy-filled walkway to Micolash and a shorter walkway to Mergo afterwards.

>Killing the host doesn't end up destroying the dream
>I really don't know
>He dies.
>>332490595
I just wish that the other areas were either bigger and more complex OR interconnected to each other.
As it stands, all you do is just teleport to places like Lecture Building, Nightmare of Mensis and Nightmare Frontier.
They're all separate parts of the map. Not even physically connected to Central Yharnam at all.
So the least they could have done is make these places super complex and big, but instead, they're all just either really small or not as big and complex as they should have been.
>>332490162

>>332490941
Well, yes, I know that.
That's precisely why I think NF and LB could have been way bigger.
If they're connected to CY, it would have been much harder to make them more complex and bigger, because the devs would have had to find a way to connect those levels in a cohesive and realistic manner to CY.
But because it's separate, the devs have more liberties to go crazy. But I really feel like they blew most of their budget on CY and didn't have the time or money to do as much work on these later areas.

Hemwick and the Forbidden Forest should have been one large, sprawling area that leads to Yahar'ghul, a creepy small town that's dominated by a huge university complex that's the School of Mensis. Byrgenworth would be a smaller retreat that actually leads into the Pthumerian Chalice dungeons.
>>332497063
If that was the case.
Also chalice dungeons being seamless, like taking a trip to the chalice dungeons is literally traveling to a mine entrance, going down to some unearthed chambers with ritual pedestals, placing the chalice on one, than taking an elevator straight down into the dungeon.
>>332494527
I actually got very close to beating that boss without killing them, like 2 hits close twice, then someone told me I could kill them and then I had a field day against the boss
>>332497907
The stable, unearthed chalice dungeons could be places to actually discover in the waking world somewhere, and probably shorter and more uniquely designed, and each hides the root chalice for the dungeon for random dungeons accessed from the Hunter's Dream.
>>332490849
The thing is BB has two locations, the real world and the Nightmare world.
All the real-world locations around Yharnam are interconnected, and form a cohesive map.
The Nightmare consists of several places that are visible from each other, but disconnected probably due to time or development constraints, but the DLC is clearly an attempt to fill the design hole, as you can see where it is relative to the other Nightmare locations and it features a more cohesive set of areas that connect to each other.
I wonder if From were thinking about totally redoing the relationship and adding connection points to the DLC and Nightmare areas in the base game but were scared off by the technical challenge or had to shift gears to DSIII?
At least the two locations still visually work.

because eve though he is hosting it, the power comes from Mergo and his wetnurse to keep it going. as for why it keeps around, gameplay reasons
>Why does every dream have a doll designed based on Maria?
no where is it implied that a dream and nightmare have to have a doll. hunters take comfort in the doll, and nightmares are places that hunters fear, so nightmares of dolls and
messengers are there
>Why the fuck are we killing these things?
because you are a hunter, and hunters hunt
>What's the Moon Presence's purpose? Is it taking the strongest Hunters that don't wake and forcing them to host the Hunter's Dream so other great ones that exist in other nightmares/dreams can be destroyed?
MP wants you to kill Mergo. probably because of his inspiration from as nyarlathotep. it doesn't really care about everything happening in Yharnam. it wants you to kill Mergo
> Who hosts the DLC nightmare?
all hunters host the nightmare, since they can be affected by bloodlust and are dragged into it when they become blood addled, the Orphan powers the nightmare and keeps the hunters trapped there.
>How the fuck do Gehrman and the Doll feel the death of Orphan of Kos?
Gherman was one of the people that went into the Hamlet, along with Maria, and killed everyone there, smashed their heads open looking for eyes, and pulled the fetus of the Orphan form the dead body of Kos that washed up onto the shore. Gherman was haunted by the shit that he did and im sure that the Orphan reached though the dreamlands to mess him up even though he was entwined with MP. the Doll only feels Maria dying because they were linked together by the voodoo that MP did when it brought it to life in the dream for Gherman in the first place.

Just got a STR/ARC build with a wheel and whirlgig +10 and around 600-780 AR. Starting a SKL/BLT build now, haven't played one since last year before the DLC. Besides the Chikage I'm aiming for the Bowblade and Church Pick. How's the Saif though? Is the Rakuyo worth using over the Chikage, or are they the same?
>>332488079
Covenants feel really tacked on and pointless, and I felt that rom and the bosses afterwards are a little too easy/uninteresting to fight, save for gerhman.
>>332503787
Well, they are the same person.
>>332503827
No problem
>>332503880
I get where the theory comes from but I don't get how it actually works.
>>332503880
>they are the same person
no, no their not. Vatti go and stay go
>>332491082
Have them dash during combos and continue the combo after their dashing. Give them quicker recovery if you're behind them.
Give them move canceling, so they go to swing but dash in a direction instead.
They can't be parried after their stage advancement. They will begin deflecting bullets until the very end of their fight, where you can only finish some of them off with a visceral.
They will be a nightmare of their own.
>>332503960
Yeah I'm sure the Doll isn't totally related to Maria either
>DaS3 doesn't have chalice dungeons
What the fuck From? What a blunder.
winter lanterns weren't even a problem, I liked their design and spook factor, but these enemies were way overblown by people, bloodborne is a pretty easy game throughout, and only low depths in chalice dungeons provide enemies that frustrate.
You know how you deal with winter lanters though? You walk up and murder them because they are useless, and if you wear high frenzy resist armor like ashen and have the frenzy res rune you will never get frenzied in the process
>>332486824
lol
>>332504039
that is completely obvious and has multiple pieces of evidence to back up that theory.
Gherman being the actual Orphan is bullshit. the Orphan was ripped out of the dead womb of Kos(m) by Gherman, Maria, and other hunters when they raided the village looking for eyes.
>>332503472
>because eve though he is hosting it, the power comes from Mergo and his wetnurse to keep it going. as for why it keeps around, gameplay reasons
I assumed the Wet Nurse was the one responsible for the Nightmare, and Micolash was stuck in it after creating it. Mergo looks very similar to Eileen in a way, and uses weapons and a moveset that's similar to the Blades of Mercy. Is that just me noticing something that isn't quite related, or is there a good reason for that?
>no where is it implied that a dream and nightmare have to have a doll.
I was responding to
>Because the nightmare is Micolash' dream, and it seems like every dream needs a doll.
I didn't think the doll was anything but a connection to Gehrman.
>because you are a hunter, and hunters hunt
That's not a reason.
>MP wants you to kill Mergo. probably because of his inspiration from as nyarlathotep. it doesn't really care about everything happening in Yharnam. it wants you to kill Mergo
But you can take over the Hunter's Dream. Why does this continue if not for the purpose of having you send more Hunters to kill more Great Ones that aren't Moon Presence?
>all hunters host the nightmare
So it's an amalgamation of their fears? That's neat.
>Gherman was one of the people that went into the Hamlet...
Oh, cool. Thanks for clearing some stuff up, Anon.
>>332478037
>Dude let me in, it's me, Mother Brain
>You like Metroid don't you?
>>332503957
>>332503960
Huh? isn't it obvious?
Gehrman and Maria were hunters based in Yharnam and travelled to the Fishing Hamlet as part of their job, but then Maria became disgusted with her role in there and threw away her weapon down the well. She took some of the survivors from the village and experimented on them in the tower, but ended up committing suicide out of guilt. Gehrman felt terrible about this and made the doll in his workshop, but as Yharnam and everything grew worse he ended up abandoning it. He takes a sunflower from Maria's garded in the research hall with him and plants in next to the lighthouse, making a little grave for Maria, then is consumed by Kos in a ritual suicide. Kos uses his body's raw materials to make the Orphan in an attempt to save her offspring, which is similar to how the Mensis society used the bagmen to collect human sacrifices as raw materials to create The One Reborn, a vessel for Mergo (but you kill it). This is why the Orphan uses a bunch of cues from Gehrman, it's made out of his body.
As for Gehrman's dreaming self, the game establishes that he dreamed the Hunter's Dream and remained there even after his human body died, and made his deal with the Moon Presence. After you kill the Orphan, he feels a lot better because you've gotten rid of the regrets he left within the Nightmare.
>>332485738
>he joined the hunt
>>332504462
So are werewolves what the beast scourge infected turn into eventually?
>>332503642
But my Holy Moonlight Sword build is Str/Arc.
>>332504573
Yup.
>>332504573
Yeah.
Fun fact: if you look at your player's right arm while performing a visceral attack, it's a beast's arm.
>>332504402
The majority of that seems like headcanon.
Where did the beast plague come from ?
Would you a Choir girl /v/?
How would you guys feel about a new Bloodborne-esque game set in Ancient Egypt?
>>332504809
blood of the Great Ones.
>>332504809
>Hey guys, we found some ancient blood down in the tombs
>Woah holy shit it actually cures all ailments
>Wait nevermind it turns you into a fucking werewolf... the entire population has already been exposed to it...? Well fuck.
>>332504402
yeah. i know that. the other guy didn't. he was saying that Gherman is the Orphan of Kos
>>332504358
I assumed the Wet Nurse was the one responsible for the Nightmare, and Micolash was stuck in it after creating it. Mergo looks very similar to Eileen in a way, and uses weapons and a moveset that's similar to the Blades of Mercy. Is that just me noticing something that isn't quite related, or is there a good reason for that?
no, the boss you fight is not Mergo, that is his wetnurse. Mergo is the dead baby of queen Yharnam and Oedon who died in still birth way back the fuck when. he is in the nightmare because Mensis tried to get in touch with him in the dreamlands, but that failed horribly and led to Yhar'gul experiencing the backlash of the failed ritual, and Mensis college being dragged into a Nightmare
>That's not a reason.
it is the reason anon. a great one came over you, spoke the great one word for 'HUNTER', and you became a Hunter. note that this is different from other hunters.
>But you can take over the Hunter's Dream. Why does this continue if not for the purpose of having you send more Hunters to kill more Great Ones that aren't Moon Presence?
you become a great one, ascending you human self. the trophy tells you that you are to sheppard humanity into it's second childhood, not to kill other Great Ones. think of the Hunters Dream as a house. you went in, killed the people living in there, now you moved in and live in there while being taken care of by the doll until you are a big and strong squid god. like Morrowind.
>>332504713
no, that's mostly right. except for Kos actually being anything other than a corpse that washed up on the shore of the hamlet.
>>332504901
>>332504852
But why werewolves and not just ayylmaos
The Pthumerian Queen is one vicious bitch. How the fuck did a bunch of awooing goofs steal her baby?
>>332504967
the blood catalazies the potential of humanity. within in humanity the beast already exists. the blood just brings it to the forefront.
>>332504967
There's two routes.
If you take the blood of the Great Ones you live longer and become stronger, but you'll have a chance of going mad and becoming a beast driven by instinct.
If you eat the flesh of the Great Ones (Pearl Slugs), then you'll develop alien sensory abilities which may give you "insight" but will probably just drive you crazy from all the sensory overload. The more alien abilities you develop the more alien you end up.
Why do so many people have so much trouble with the defiled Hotdog? I don't consider myself a good player at all but I never struggle with it. It's very predictable and aside from the attack where it does a flurry of bites with flames in his mouth it's not fast.
Does that headgear with the blindfold in it not stop them from raising frenzy?
Really, it should since it's done by looking at them.
>>332504941
Can't I stay with Doll even AFTER I become a big squid?
>>332505125
So the splish splosh people in the clock tower are precursors to the celestial emissaries?
>>332505104
I would have thought the beast within would be a chimp literally chimping out, but I guess wolves are more rule of cool.
Or is there a reason why the Moon Presence is kind of wolf-like?
>>332505343
yes
>>332505375
very early precursors yes
they also use Maria as a cumdumpster
>>332505375
Yes, they are indeed. That's why the Living Failures are a bossfight, they're failed attempts to create the Celestial Emissary.
>Or is there a reason why the Moon Presence is kind of wolf-like?
Not really? MP is kind of the only actual "alien" (besides Oedon) if you use the original story as a basis.
>>332505469
I just started DS1 and is it wrong of me to have feelings for Solaire? Isn't he a meme character?
>>332505375
>I would have thought the beast within would be a chimp literally chimping out, but I guess wolves are more rule of cool.
most people when they think beast they think something feral, where the wolf if the most common
>Or is there a reason why the Moon Presence is kind of wolf-like?
there are some that propose that the MP is the source of the beasthood, since the red moon happens when he comes along so he can influence influence the beasts.
i don't put stock in it though

The Old Laberynth should have been a massive optional area with many, many interconnected levels and all the unique Chalice bosses. Have an entrance after BSB for easy stuff equivilant to Depth 1-2. Have another entrance at Byergonworth And a final entrance behind Eribritas. But they all connect together. Have an actual designed area and build it so its lore relevant and has cool shortcuts and stuff.
Then for the Random Dungeons have "nigjtmares" which would be random dungeons but use assets from Yharnam, Forest, Nightmare etc... assets and allow more choice in creation, instead of having arbitrary Material requirements instead have the layout be affected by what materials and in what order you put them.

>>332507484
Like the autist I am, I spent some time redesigning the Chalice Dungeons. I don't have a scanner and my phone's camera is shit, so here's what I planned:
>You activate the first chalice on the gravestone
>You enter an open area underground, with branching pathways
>Multiple doors that require offerings to open
>each one leads to a different chalice dungeon, with different aesthetics and themes
>kin themed one
>beast themed one
>mad hunter themed one
>nightmare themed one
>each of these have their own layers, and the layers gradually change their aesthetic to become something more fitting for the theme
>Kin chalices go deeper in to the ground, gradually turning from the first layer as a cavern with the more common kin enemies, through a beach-like area with sandstone walls, to what appears to be rock, but above you is the cosmos
>Beast chalices remain under the ground, layers never going up or down, but rather doors leading through to other areas. The designs resemble Old Yharnam, a city in ruins, showing the gradual progression of man to beast.
>Hunter chalices have lifts that progress upwards, and start as a cavern, eventually becoming an ordinary city. A cleaner one for the most part, but plagued by mad hunters and their roaming hounds
>Nightmare chalices are more 'random', elements resembling each of those, but with elevators leading up or down, doorways that change what was behind you, and having something different in front of you. Passing through a door here is like passing through the door to the Nightmare Frontier. Lifts pass through water, leading to different things.
I don't like the farming in chalices, I feel like they need more direction while mainting the arcade aspects they offer. I wouldn't care as much about their linear structure if they were visually different each time, and progression felt like progression, not just slapping more HP/damage on enemies you killed earlier.
