I would recommend getting at least one magic character so you can try out all the cool spell combos you can make. The NPC you can recruit that's a mage is a total fag so make one yourself. Also remember that classes really only affect your starting equipment and they can be completely customized to your liking.

I played vanilla for 85 hours. It's definitely not one of the best games of all time, but certainly a very enjoyable experience.
