Well for one thing it completely reversed Clouds character back to broody mcsulkerson undoing his character arc in the game where he learned to get the fuck over himself, other characters were just kind of a fart in the wind and just there to meet the "hey these guys were your party members" quota, and bringing Sephiroth back to die in like 10 minutes was lame as hell.
I liked the turks in the movie though.

Giving him a reason to regress back to the character he was in the game still didn't make it good. Experiencing his same bullshit from the game when he had gotten over it was irritating, why would I want to see that again? I'd play the game again then. And bringing Sephiroth back instead of having another villain just drove home the 'this is just fanservice" feel next to them forcing in every character just because, hey, remember these guys? I guess it was cool to see the characters in better graphics, but passed that it's not a very good movie.
And a Barret that doesn't look like Mr. T fused with a gorilla is not a Barret I want to see.

How come you're always a father in these types of situations? I feel like most people who play games don't have a child yet, so in situations where the game wants you to become instantly attached to the character fail cause people don't have that paternal instinct kick in. Why don't games try to exploit sibling relationships instead? I'm sure more people have a sibling of some sort rather then a child, and it might help them to relate easier. I guess it's also the fact that you either have too much or too little information about the character thrown at you before they're taken away too that makes it awkward to care about them.
I'll admit, I didn't 100% get it when I first played it, but now I tear up whenever I replay it.

There's quite a few games that have brought tears to my eyes (LISA, both TWD, Layton, Bioshock 1 and 2) but I don't think a game has ever made me full on bawl. They made me feel that immediate depressing feeling that comes with ending a game, and they hurt but I've never choked up. My brother on the other hand has. He's younger and hasn't played too many video games, but when we finished the first TWD he was in such an emotional state for the whole ending scene. I kinda worried about him having an asthma attack, he was just an emotional wreck. My sister on the other hand was really sad by the scene but not a single tear.

Mass effect as collective, I played all the games as they came out but kinda just breezed through them and didn't really get "immersed" but about a year after the third one I marathoned them autisticaly reading the majority of lore and doing every mission available. Like I was in my unis semester break and played them for like 7-10 hours a day
By the time I reached the third one I was so into them I was tearing up at nearly every scene you had with your team because you all knew you were going to die anyway

It wasn't the melodrama, but something about the fact that I had been playing and loving these games for a decade and it got to me, man. It was 4am in the morning, I hadn't slept in 48hrs and I got the chin wobbles and a few tears.
The other time would be when they shut down the MGO2 servers. I moped for days, I remember sitting down for a tournament evening and remembering it was fucking gone and done. If any from the Spetsnaz GRU clan are about, you are missed. Those were good fucking times, and the new MGO just doesn't compare.

One that comes to mind early on was Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete. I have no idea, but when I beat it I cried because it was over.
Just recently though, Earthbound. My mom used to let me stay home from school even though she knew I wasn't really sick and we'd play this together. She would play it sometimes when I went to school and she'd help me catch up.
She died a few years back, and I got a Wii U last year. The first thing I did when I got it was buy Earthbound on their marketplace type deal, but as soon as I started talking to the mom in the game I just broke down. It was the most random thing and it came out of nowhere. I turned the game off and haven't played it since.
I never cried but I had this knot in the throat thing a few times, most recently in estival Versuswhen Miyabi is reunited with her mom and they spend time cooking egg rice together and when they part ways in the end

Don't even fucking deny it, if it came down to saving the one person in life you care about at the cost of a billion people you've never even met you'd do it in a heartbeat.
You have no emotional attachment to the other billion people, but you do to that one person you care about.
People aren't just objective decision making machines. Emotions will easily get the better of us most times.
There are very few people who would make the choice to save other people instead of their own loved one.
These "for the greater good", "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" sacrifices only happen in fiction. Movies, games etc.

The whole premise of Gears is the human race is dying.
Throughout the three games, if you like the series, you get attached to fucking Marcus, Dom, Baird, and Cole.
The whole fucking slogan for Gears of War 3 was, "Brothers to the end."
My two best friends and I took that as our motto to the end.
Then over halfway in, the one character who had most character development, kills himself because of his wife.
He hangs in there after 2, but you're by where Maria's grave is.
He wants to save his friends, and has nothing to live for because he's nothing without Maria.
You never get much personality out of Marcus the whole series, and this one time you see him go ballistic about his best friend.
By this time you know how much Marcus cares about Dom, and how close he is to Anya, and she tries stopping him, but Marcus is too hellbent on losing his best friend.
Madworld then cues in.
It made me sad and tear up.
I played it alone by myself and cried, because I never wanted to see any of the cast die.

The whole thing with Asriel felt too forced for me to feel truly sympathetic with him.
One thing I've noticed is that some people are seeing Chara in a more sympathetic light. I remember Asriel mentioning in the final part of the Pasifist route that he developed his Flowery mentality as a result of his death. I started thinking that Chara developed their own cruel personality from their life up on the surface and that dying and being trapped in what I can only assume is Purgatory only made them crueler.

It's not about what's fair, it's about what you would do if this were an actual real life situation. Not what's the morally right thing to do.
People would save their own loved ones over some town.
The only reason anyone ever thinks they would even make the choice of the many over the few is because they've been conditioned into that line of thinking from this dumb trope.
But thinking it doesn't mean much, since if they were ever in that situation themselves in real life they would pick their loved ones, so would you, and so would everyone else.
That's how we work as emotional beings, we make irrational decisions based on emotions all the time.
There are very few who would pick the other choice, and all of them would be because they suffer from some sort of mental issue that inhibit emotions like sociopathy or similar.
