I thought that most recent cards were powerful enough that dedicating a card for PhysX had minimal improvements, if any.
>>
>>332418867
as you'd expect, it only works in games that support physx/gameworks

it puts less load on your cpu and handles the effects better

it's also a little bit of a waste of power but if you're like me and have it included where you live, it's not an issue

tl;dr improvements aren't huge but still somewhat noticeable if you use the effects

the 4gb of vram is segmented into two pieces, very fast 3.5gb and 512mb not as fast

when the card begins to use more than 3.5GB, it begins to throttle very badly. a lot of games right now don't break the 3.5GB barrier, but those that do suffer on GTX 970s

The shitty thing is, its really hard to find benchmarks for 3 monitors.
In our case, the $300 range would leave you with a 970 if you went nvidia, which obviously wouldnt work, the 3.5 would fuck us over hard.
Get the 390 or something similar.

I admit the 390 is cheaper and a little better, but i found myself dependent on Nvidia Inspector. Most games are done so poorly for the PC, without some good "effects forcing" tool the quality would drop so much. I always heard it is so hard to atually force stuff like AA and AO on radeons. I've though about having 2 380x in crossfire, but my budget didn't allow that and i wasn't sure the performance was worth it, also had to shell more money for the power supply if i were to go for it

There is also polaris, which is supposed to be much less energivore, so we'll see if two cards can run on a 650w psupply

Yups - like the 8gb 290x models early on only Sapphire got dibs and even then they didn't make many. AMD did eventually let other companies make 8gb 290x models and in hindsight it was clearly to prepare them for the 390x.

I'm 99% sure it did. Try closing every program you got and use something like CCleaner to wipe browsers and registry files, then run the program again. I'm certain you'll get higher scores. When I did mine the first time I don't think I even had a game open just documents and tabs, and it still affected the score.

will having more than 8gb of ram stop the annoying issue of things slowing down after I leave them open too long?

for example, if I leave 20 chrome tabs open overnight, if I wake up and try to restore them from the background, it takes a bit and get's choppy.

I've never been able to figure this out but I've narrowed it down to either being the cpu (amd fx-8350), hard drive, or ram.

This has happened to every single computer I've ever had.
>>
>>332428651

A 980 Ti is pretty much top of the line all out, but again, it would be a really expensive PC in the end so if you can afford it go for it.

There are two tabs in CCleaner, Windows(with IE) and Applications(other browsers), maybe you checked the IE one thinking it would save the ones in Chrome. Or you actually had the right tab open but still checked the box thinking it meant to save. All the boxes ask for what you want to delete, checking them means you wish to delete, having them unchecked means it won't get deleted. You dun goofed.

No, I don't buy a PS4 because I only play PC video games. And also, AMD tends to be cheaper and more useful for some things (like for example, with my 120€ 8-core CPU, I can compile quickly my software, if I've had bought an i7, it would be a little bit better, I know, but also really much more expensive in euros !)

Will everything be okay? I never run this fan on full blast because it's noisy, it's nice to keep it at 50-70.

I'm the guy you're replying to.

I bought a whole new computer used off of craigslist, then upgraded the shitty GTX8800 that came with it (which honestly is worse than the 4850 in the little amounts of TF2 I played on it before upgrading the video card). I upgraded to a GTX950.

I'm this guy with the GTX950 >>332429946

I imagine based on the fact you're using a 4850 means that you were in the same boat as me with a Core 2 Duo processor. My advice to you is upgrade to ANYTHING with a Core i5 or Core i7. After upgrades, I only paid $400 for this tower. Wait for the deals, video cards are EXPENSIVE right now.

In terms of what you get out of an upgrade. Just upgrading to the "i5 2500 / GTX950" over my old "core 2 duo e8400 / Radeon4850" enabled me to do PS2, Gamecube/Wii emulation flawlessly, Core2Duo machine couldn't do them. I played through Fallout 4 on tweaked medium/high settings and Witcher 3 locked at 30fps (was able to play it as high as 45-50fps on medium setting, but the fluctuation of fps bothered me). I tried booting those games on my C2D/4850 machine and the games wouldn't even start, they don't even let you get to the title screens.

me

One more thing. I actually did play through Witcher 2 on my C2D/4850 machine. It works. I played through the game on low/medium settings and it was 25-30fps the whole time. There is only one part of the entire game where you'll experience single-digit framerates. near the end of the game, there's this DLC quest where you go down some catacombs to face a golem. On the way there, you go through a sewer area that is completely packed with enemies. THIS ONE SPOT OF THE GAME made my game stagger so goddamn hard. Fortunately, you don't have to fight them, you can just run past this area.

980Ti G1. It's much cheaper than the Titan X, which is the fastest single card GPU, but it's not much slower.

For reference, the 980 Ti G1 costs 638. Titan X costs 1000.

Works nice. I'm waiting for this pascal/Vulcan thing to take off so I can buy one of the next gen cards.

I only play at 1080p 21:9 so there's no real reason to dive into 4K 144hz ready cards yet.

I also don't care about VR so that's another reason to wait on upgrading I guess.

There is insanely little difference between the 700 and 900 series aside form the 980. In fact there's so little difference Nvidia canned the entire 700 line because it was a better purchase than the 900 because of price.

Basically Nvidia came out with the Titan and BTFO everything else, but the Titan was super high end and honestly had too much power at the time for people to justify the price since nothing really required that much. So they released the 780 TI, basically a baby titan at a more affordable price point that could do everything the Titan could (at the time). Then they didn't really make all that much progress for a few years, releasing small upgrades with no major improvements while they wait to release their next gen cards. I'd imagine most of their current efforts are focused on getting their new stuff out the door instead of polishing their old stuff.
TLDR: 780 was an overachieving card at the start of the 'gen', 970 is an underachiever at the end of a 'gen'.

Disclaimer: I have no actual qualifications aside from watching the market to see when something worth the money for an upgrade comes out.

>o they released the 780 TI, basically a baby titan at a more affordable price point that could do everything the Titan could (at the time).

This is wrong. The 780ti exists because the 290x was (and remains) a titan killer. The 780ti (and later titan black) are the full fat chips Nvidia had been keeping for the quadro line until that point.

Its why the 980ti exists - to ruin the fury x's day given the fury x is (relatively) only just behind a titan x but is half the cost.

I doubt it will last the same as when it was new. You might need to change the paste a bit more frequently because TIM does degrade over time, especially from exposure to sunlight.
I personally would recommend that you buy a new tube for $4-7 if you want optimal thermals.

had a very similar CPU (i think it was 945 or 946, the one you cant overclock) and speccy and others could not find and show the temps, one of the softwares that works (dont know how) is Gamebooster3, yea, that shit shows temps in the bottom of the page, and they show cpu tems, tried to make a quick comparison with bios temps and the case temp, and they are pretty close, like 5 degrees of difference.

they can handle very intense shit, when i bought a newer cpu, i let that one with the mobo to my nephew, and i forgot to connect the fan.
>turn on pc
>windows start normally
>as soon as i want to open chrome the computer freezes
>shut it down and go to bios
>set defaults just in case and check temps
>60°C on BIOS
>well, thats a little high
>as soon as i finnish saying that, my nephew shows me the loose fan cable
>pull the power plug as fast as i can
>connect the fan
>everything smells like burnt plastic
>turn on pc and fan works ok
>no problems so fat

I had to add, the mobo is a shitty ASROCK, and the cooler was stock.
i really thought it was going to die, if its below 3.0, go for something else, but if yours is 3.0ghz, you can overclock it a litte (if you have the one that can be overcloced)

Im not an AMD fag anymore, now i have a 4790k, but i wont deny that they handle temps very well.

Yes but the reason why is important - if the 290x hadn't come along and/or was slower than it turned out to be (given the relatively high clocks of it i'm betting Nvidia was hoping it would be in the 800-900mhz range like tahiti was given how dense hawaii is) then the ttian would've remained unchallenged and the 780ti would have never existed as the regular 780 would be besting this underclocked 290x.

19:10 is an outdated standard though. If you look at steam hardware stats 1920:1080 outpaced the more popular 19:10 resolution and that wasn't even 1920:1200, it was 1680×1050. Currently 1920:1200 isn't even 2% of steam's userbase. 1366:768 is far more popular and that resolution is a goddamned abomination.

Well considering this was kicked off by a chart comparing high end graphics cards, you can kinda expect anyone who cared would have a dedicated monitor of decent quality.

Also still doesn't change the fact that nobody uses 19:10 which makes it a weird aspect ratio to benchmark with.

This one is semi old, since I am now back on Windows 7, but the hardware is the same.

Not sure yet if I am going to keep the 980 Ti and SLI it or if I will get a Pascal card (if the performance is like 2x what the 980 Ti can do on 2560 x 1440 and 4K, then maybe).

I am also doing a build for my friend at the moment, and it is:

GTX 960 4GB version
FX-8350
8GB of RAM
1 TB WD Blue Drive

I wish I could have gotten him a GTX 970 and at least a i5, but money was tight (was a $500 build).

Granted, they do not plan on doing anything too graphic intensive, just the odd Steam JRPG or Square Enix/Bethesda title, and their monitor doesn't even go up to 1080p anyway.
