>Not wanting jeremy soule in your shitty game to make it x99 times better only with his music

>Has to do a fucking test for free to see if hes music is good for a game
>>
>asking Jeremy Soule to do a free demo
What in the actual fuck?

Just go play one of the dozens of games that he's done the soundtrack for.
>>
has to be 343 or whoever is making halo these days
they already fucked over their last huge name composer so it's obvious it's them
>>
>>332409492
343/Microsoft makes the most sense.
>>
Usually, "free demos" and "art tests" are a way for publishers to get free work from young artists who are just starting out.
The modus operandi is that you contact as many nameless artists as you can and ask each of them to do an art test. And take their work and tell every single one of them that they're not the right person.

Trying to pull that trick on jeremy soule is downright disrespectful. baka desu senpai.
>>
Jeremy Soule is pretty much exclusively a Fantasy composer so it'd have to be a company making fantasy games.

Supposedly the company makes $5.5 billion in games specifically. Either Sony or Microsoft it seems.
>>
Is he the faggot responsible for the OSTs of The Cuck Scrolls games?

Low Energy
>>
>>332409492
>>332409661
>>332409904
Bioware maybe?

>>332409757
Is that legal? I'm not an artist but I'd protect myself with a contract like "You can only use this free sample if you end up hiring me for the project"
>>
>>332410054
obvious teenager trying to fit in
>>
>>332410147
>Bioware maybe?
damn maybe. EA would be the publisher and they're dumb enough to tell himt hat
Does EA have 5.5 billion in revenue though?
>>
He's not wrong though. Agencies love to ask creative people to work for free. It's complete bullshit.
>>
>>332409904

But it'd be neither of them because both have studios that produce highly profitable AAA titles and he said the publisher hasn't had a hit in years.
>>
>>332410054
Nigga are you thinking of a different series? while the game play of the games maybe subpar the music is fantastic
>>
>>332410161
>hurr durr muh Elder Scrolls were cool, except the last 2 and the first two I didnt play because it was before I was born
>muh Morrowind
>>
>>332410275
>he said the publisher hasn't had a hit in years.
Does that necessarily mean financially though? Soule isn't an outsider to gaming, I wouldn't be surprised if he just meant a particularly great game.
>>
>>332410147
If you try to do anything but agree to their terms, they'll just ignore you and move on to the next person or try to bullshit you into agreeing.
Because they're a big company with all the money and you're the nameless artist, they expect you to agree just for the non-existant change of getting hired. They especially love preying on the fans of their own products, like if you have lots of fanart of their game or something.
>>
>>332410312
how old are you seriously lmao
>>
>>332410147
He literally made the music for KOTOR you plebs
>>
>>332410415
old enough to fuck you're mum
>>
>>332410147
Oh, forgot the most important bit.
They don't have to use the work verbatim, just the elements and ideas present in the work.
If you design something for free and show them, they won't steal the image, they'll steal the design.
Good luck proving anything after that.
>>
>asking for a free demo from Jeremy soule himself.
What are they smoking?
>>
>>332409292

>asking Jeremy Soule a fucking demo

GEE, HOW ABOUT GOIN ON YOUTUBE AND LISTENING TO HIS SHIT DIRECTLY, FUCKING HACKS
>>
>>332410460
if this shit ain't obvious this nigga is baiting hard
>>
>>332410342

If he considers his highest profile games (Elderscrolls) to be laudable then he can't talk badly about Halo or Uncharted.
>>
>>332409292

Jeremy Soule's creative zenith was in 2006. After that everything was low-intensity, bland and unimaginative.

Just put on a game of Morrowind, Oblivion or Guild Wars and sink into the music. It's gripping, radiant and mixed well. I have a hard time making out the music in Skyrim. It's just ambient background waffle to be honest.

I kind of reject the notion that just having him in your game makes it 99x better. That being said, trying to contract free work from a renowned professional is a downright con-artist business practise.
>>
>>332409292
Can't they just Youtube his folio?
>>
>>332410528
Have you seen the reception for Oblivion/Skyrim? I think he can.
>>
>But again, this is a game publisher that hasn't had a hit in a long while

EA.
>>
>>332410509
>release text based "RPG" in fucking 2002
>permavirgins defend it 14 years later
>>
>>332410576
Anon they know who he is, they're just looking for cheap free music.
>>
>>332409757

Can't up n coming artist copy right their work so that they don't just take it for free though? I've heard and seen this "give us samples" so that companies take them as "gifts" from the artist, but they can also copy right their craft to protect themselves from this bullshit too.
>>
>>332410559

>>
>>332409292
huh, old publisher no hits according to jeremy

Sega? but they have alien isolation and total war which are hits
one could argue activision which doesn't ahve new IP at all
then there is EA,new IPs of which are terrible or non existent
i'd wager it's EA they have no appreciation of talent
>>
>>332410685
WHAT?! GW2 was rehashed GW1 music.
>>
>>332410601

But the same thing goes for the other series. Highly successful both critically and financially yet all three franchises are dumb down gameplay wise to attract a big audience. He can't say a studio hasn't had a hit in awhile when they have the backing of studios producing some of the biggest names in gaming today.
>>
>>332410651
Well that's very faggotry considering all the great tracks he made even non-RPG tracks e.g. Dawn of War
>>
>>332410736

haha what?
>>
>>332410818
>complete first main quest
>50% of the game complete
>>
>>332410657
You can do that, but then they'll just say "no" and you've wasted time on a piece that is tailored to THEIR demands that they won't buy. What are you going to do with a copyrighted piece that you can't monetize?
Since you're the one wasting your time, any kind of work should be done with payment in advance.
So yeah, never do free work without payment, ever, for any reason. You'll get fucked over.
>>
Thats the kind of jewish practices id expect out of ea or Activision actuall
>>
>>332410826
So you didn't listen to the soundtrack?
>>
>Fuck this studio for asking me to do unpaid work, but I wont name them though

Why did he even open his mouth at all?
>>
>>332410627

Depends what you class as a hit. Inquisition was a critical and commercial success, and Battlefront sold more than even expectations.

Both were shit games, but they were hits.

It's really hard to know who he might be talking about because all of the billion dollar publishers I can think of make games that are massive hits. They might be utter shite (Call of Duty) or creatively void (EA), but they still make hits. It can't be Bethesda because they've worked together frequently.

Nexon perhaps?

it's pretty dumb too, I doubt he has problem finding work considering he's probably one of the most well known composer in the industry
You could get away with that shit with a desperate young artist trying to make it but a well known professional? Complete idiocy.
>>
>>332410843
Ebin anon.
I'm not even talking about the holocaust denial argument.
I'm laughing at the fact how stupid he is for actually comparing pirating a musical piece to killing of 6 gorillion.

>But forget the Pirate Bay… Piracy is now mainstream. Not since the Holocaust have we seen so many people of a select group forcibly stripped of their livelihoods in a public euphoria of false morals. As one who is of Jewish descent, I can say that I make this statement in a very narrow fashion, but there are similarities. Creators are being vilified, laughed off and treated with indifference by scary multitudes of people who care not for artists’ lives or liberties–let alone the concerns involved in the making of art. The new “norm” is being heralded as “liberation” from the “contrived” and “unfair” standards of fees and payments that have traditionally been worked out in a fair market society. Instead, this is the new unfair market society. The “Jews” in this valid analogy are creators. We are losing our homes, our futures and our ability to take care of our children. Laugh. I dare you. And unlike the streetlamp lighters, the world still needs creators!

Nah, he didn't compose for WT.
He composed the music for Birds of Prey (a console game released under Sturmovik brand) which was Gaijin's first WW2 flight game. It was later re-released on PC as Wings of Prey.
Gaijin later reused music from it in Birds of Steel, a console sequel which was later ported to PC in evolved form as War Thunder.

I agree, at least with asking for a proffesional. They should probably know exactly what his music sounds like, and if they want to hire him they could suggest certain themes to whatever he produces.

Sure a free composition might be fair if it was an indie dev, asking a indie musician.

Nigga, I learned how to play Glory of Cyrodiil on classic guitar. I've built my own harp, I've taught myself to play it, I learned to play keyboard by myself and I'm learning how to sing. And I try to write my own pieces. That means I'm very concerned with artist who come up with original, compelling music. Soule did that, and doesn't anymore, for whatever reason. There is a definite, tangible, measurable difference in the intensity and scope of his earlier and later works. Try to say otherwise with a straight face.

I don't know what kind of art you make or who you've worked for, but I can promise you that 'art tests' are not legit at all. They're wasting your time. And I know that from experience, you're being used.

Any legit company is going to look at your portfolio and your work experience and your online presence and make a judgement based on that. Actual talent isn't going to waste time doing art tests, and they know that. The companies that can't pick up the actual talent are the ones messing people around with art tests and ending up with low quality artists.

Trust me, having self respect and pride in your work takes you much further than bending over for shitty companies who are promising you the big time.

Occasionally Zimmer has a stroke of genius and composes something worth a damn. Listen to the score he did for The Pledge, it's completely unlike him. It's quiet, subtle and still melodic. Zimmer's modus operandi usually goes like this:

>come up with a melody so simple even a mouth-breathing retard would take offense
>add strings and horns, maybe a few keys if the scene is supposed to be "emotional"
>play around with the volume, depending on the intensity of the scene you're supposed to score
>copy the track five times and alter it slightly in tempo and volume
>deflect criticism by yelling MUH LEITMOTIF
>fill the rest of the score with generic ambient wobbling and call it a day

To this day, I'm puzzled by how Zimmer could become as popular as he did. The man couldn't compose his way out of a paper bag.

As far as mainstream movie composers go, Angelo Badalamenti, Howard Shore, Clint Mansell and Ennio Morricone are still the best.

These rules don't apply for game art industry.
Artests are essential since lol deadlines and massive team work.

If you want your shitty animorphic fur suit to be featured on some erotic fantasy novel and the author wants to art test, they're dumb.

IF a company wants to see wether the artist can work fast, isn't fussy and can nail the style in a tiny timeframe, there's no way other than an art test.
Otherwise you'll be hiring bunch of stuck up idiots and firing them a day later once you find out they're lazy cunts who get angry when they're told they're wrong. It has happened before, where even brilliant artists got sacked instantly cause they didn't understand the dicipline.

>Doing it for free for 10 years
I'm going to go out on a limb and say you've simply not gotten much, if any, work at all in the last 10 years. The only time it's reasonable to work for free is for something like a game jam, where everyone's just there for fun, and the work is cheap and quick to make.

I've been making free work for 7 or so years, now, myself, but that work has been almost entirely for myself and no one else - the majority of the things I made that weren't for a game jam were commissioned, and they were from people who specifically sought me out. With that in mind, I'm led to believe that you've been sitting on your rear, not actually looking for a job, for the majority of those 10 years.

>>332414403
I don't think occasionally working for free is a bad thing. Some of my commissions were direct results of my game jam work - that's work I simply wouldn't have gotten, otherwise.

>All these people getting salty over art tests.

Look, they sound shit but they are practical.
I knew someone once who was a great character modeller. Had an online fanbase as well, but was stuck up, slow to improve and overall slow.
She got art tested by an AAA studio. Got a simple task, slightly out of her character zone. She fucked up tremendously, delivered sub-par, unfinished work, terrible textureworke, worse design and horrible topology.

I knew another guy who got art tested for star citizen. He was brilliant, but he got fucked up because for some reason, he believed SC was going to be released for PS1.

Art tests are necessity to weed out that special kind of retardation. Every artist in the industry at some point in their career needs to do some art tests. Bitching just means you're not cut out for it.

Let me repeat this: you have worse standards than a whore. You're worse than fucking Indians in programming jobs because they at least get minimal pay. No matter what your fucking job is, unless it's charity work, you should NEVER EVER WORK FOR FREE. "Exposure and experience" isn't payment. "Exposure and experience" isn't bread on the table. What everyone is complaining about is doing them for free.

Honestly his denial that he's being taken advantage of is the most interesting thing. I mean there's a point in your life where you would have to get on your knees and start sucking but the fact that he's trying to label it as a positive experience and not something to push through and overcome is very interesting.

Jeremy Soule has an impressive resume. You don't really need to test the guy, it's more a matter of whether he can make the kind of style you want.
>>
>>332416164
>It's literally only 2 weeks
Which could be more than enough to screw you completely if you're not paid and still have to provide for yourself, somehow. If you've got someone else paying the bills, it may not seem like such a big deal, but if you're relying on yourself, losing out on two weeks of work could put you in an especially sore position.
>>
>>332416183
You spend 9/12 years in a school to get a shitty job pushing carts in a supermarket parking lot.
Or even to qualify at an university
>just to spend another 3-5 years to study

this is how dumb you sound.

why would you even want him, he lost all his talent and now he's just a fucking hack.

he hasnt made good music since Oblivion and his best work was GW1

Few people can do creative work their whole life and keep creating interesting, non-repetitive stuff
>>
>>332410147
>Is that legal? I'm not an artist but I'd protect myself with a contract like "You can only use this free sample if you end up hiring me for the project"
This is why you do a paid "art test" which is then basically commission work with a chance of getting hired for further work. They get to use your work and evaluate your further employment and you get paid and don't waste your time doing commission work for free.
>>
>wow this guy is pretty good
>maybe I'll hire him
>oh wait he'll do it for free never mind

This so fucking much. I used to do free art tests/spec art when I was first starting out and I got screwed every time. I was hired on my current great job right now because the guy looked at my portfolio and gave me a (paid) test run for a few weeks and hired me on.

I did my first drawing 10 years ago.
4 years ago I tried 3d.
I've spent 4 years learning design and modern workflows and engines.
I've been only paid for small commissions and whatever.
Been gotten some internships and large studios and lots of freelance for smaller ones.
I've not even have time to get a job since I've always been at school.
Now schools ending, I got an art test, another paid one, 1 job offer in writing and other large parties interested in me.
I'd say I've done far, far, far, far better than the avarage.

Two weeks of pay is a helluva lot of money if you have no job, anon.

And no, you shouldn't get any pay for a interview because you're not actually doing any work for the company there.

If they do demand you work for free "as a test" then you kindly decline and ask for payment during the test. If they refuse, find another employer.

I would if that interview lasted 2 weeks. What you did was basically free internship or free commission work. Both of which should not be done.
>If you get mad over having to do what you love and have a chance of getting a job, you're the one everyone around you actually hate.
You're trying to enter a rough and cutthroat industry. This kind of idealistic thinking is just gonna get you burned.
After all, it's an industry, you're expected to churn out art as a product, not as an expression of your fucking soul. People paying you don't give a shit if you love what you do and they only respect you if you put your fucking foot down.

This is a scary statement.
Either you're really young and are defending your poor business descisions while disregarding any advice
or
You started "trying to get on a professional drawing level" 10 years ago and count that learning period as a period where you could have been employed for drawing.
Either way you're being unreasonable.

>I've been only paid for small commissions and whatever
THAT'S WHAT ART TESTS ARE

>Been gotten some internships and large studios and lots of freelance for smaller ones.
>I've not even have time to get a job since I've always been at school.
Kinda contradict eachother.
But, taking it as truth, I very much hope your internship was paid for. Same for your freelance work. As they're work. And people get paid for work.

>Now schools ending, I got an art test, another paid one, 1 job offer in writing and other large parties interested in me.
>I'd say I've done far, far, far, far better than the avarage.
I'd say you're heavily overestimating yourself, especially since you're entering the 2D/3D art and design business.
You might not have had much competition in highschool, but you will now.
You will run into hobbyists that are better than you.
You will run into crazily talented people that'll outperform you in skill, technique and time any day of the week.
You will CONTANTLY have to prove yourself.
You will have to improve your craft for the rest of your life, at the highest pace you can muster.
Once again, taking 2 weeks on work that you won't get paid for is crazy.
Fresh out of highschool this might not be apparent yet, but this is your LIFE now.

Primarily an freelance illustrator.
(have worked for studio fulltime once, but there was a lot of downtime which I didn't like)

I'm hopefully not yet that far into my carreer, but so far I've done quite simple book-covers, to concept-art for a country-based game developer.
Both examples lead to very different works, and I can safely say none of it mirrors my actual style when I paint something for fun/myself.
I've had to learn how to adapt my work, pacing and quality to deliver accepted results.
I've come to the point that publishers and studios actually contact me for future work, so I have the liberty of accepting and declining jobs that I find more suitable to me.
The fact that I have to scavenge and fight for jobs a lot less now is honestly a blessing.

Went off on a tangent a bit, but I hope it paints a picture.
