Play the fucking game.
If you already played it but you don't remember it's not a fake evidence, then play the game again.
>>332396025
>it's not a fake evidence
It literally is.
He used forged evidence to convict Kristoph.
Yes. Kristoph couldn't have proved the card was forged without dragging himself into even further shit by admitting he had taken the real bloody card. A major theme of the game was that sometimes the perfect proof does not exist for one reason or another, and Phoenix devised ways to make sure Kristoph wouldn't get away despite that, first with the forged evidence and then with the jury system.
DD then went all "the end doesn't justify the means" and completely missed the point established in 4, but to be fair no other game in the series before or after 4 tried to challenge its views legitimately.
>>332396114
>no other game in the series before or after 4 tried to challenge its views legitimately.
Have you already forgotten about 1-5 and the whole deal with Gant using forged evidence to get Joe Darke convicted?
>>332396316
But didn't he only do that so he could blackmail Lana?
>>332396512
No, he blackmailed Lana by killing Neils and making it look like Ema did it (for Lana). Gant's plan was to pin the blame on Darke and get him convicted, so he also forged some evidence for Edgeworth to prosecute him.
>>332396114
Phoenix was lying.
It's not forged evidence, it's the card from years ago
Jog my memory for a bit but did Phoenix ever unlock Kristoph's black Psyche Locks?
>>332397604
Nope.
>>332396316
currently replaying through PW and now I just started 1-5.
1-4 was quite the ride, can't wait for shit to get hyped on this last case.
>>332396025
Nigga it's forged
he literally forged evidence despite being disbarred for it
>>332396114
>DD then went all "the end doesn't justify the means"
Really fucking hate this tbqh.
They backpedaled so hard and tried to make Phoenix look like the pure, noble, never do wrong attorney who always wins clean.
>>332397539
There is no "card from years ago", what are you thinking about? Phoenix began playing poker sometime after being disbarred, but there were no incidents until the one which triggered the first case.
>>332397604
There was no explanation for those in AJ.
DD had black psyche locks too but they explained them in a way that doesn't fit Kristoph's case at all.
>>332397604
>>332400165
Yeah, the black locks in 4 were clearly intended as an extension of the theme of perfect evidence not always existing. Kristoph knew Phoenix couldn't possibly have a way to prove he killed Drew Misham using legitimate evidence, so his conviction about not confessing was absolute. In 5, they are instead defined as secrets the bearer is consciously unaware of.
>>332400165
>>332400367
that was a huge load of bullshit.
You mean to tell me that during a whole year, Phoenix NEVER bothered to ever ask Pearl or Maya what was up with those black locks he saw?
No, it wasn't until Athena got them that he IMMEDIATELY needed to know what the fuck was up with them
>>332395895
Phoenix did nothing wrong
>>332400612
It was intentional so that DD would have less references to AJ.

He didn't. He threw a rage and knocked out Olga. He never tried to kill anyone.
>>332395895
Literally nothing about this AA game was memorable to me.
>>332399717
The point of DD as a whole was to try to make the series have SOME hope left in it since literally every single other game (AA through AJ) had forgery, coaching, lying under oath, mass judicial and political corruption, extortion, blackmail, abuse of discretion, and legalized corruption... all by people who hold power within the system.
And it's not like DD turned Phoenix into some goody2shoes either, he just wanted to save people the honest way like he and Miles agreed on all those years ago. It's better to change the system from the inside rather than becoming a demon yourself.
Of course I think DD should've touched more on what went on in AJ, but then again I heard AJ was basically funded by Japan for their brief tenure with the jury system that was scrapped anyways.

Dual Destinies was about Phoenix, Edgeworth and Blackquill trying to repair the system legally from the inside and trying to find hope even when there was none after all the corruption that had happened throughout the original trilogy and Apollo Justice.

>>332426706
Apollo Justice is canonically Ace Attorney 4.
>>332426706
Apollo Justice Ace Attorney is not a spin-off, it's the 4th entry in the main series
The spinoffs are the two Investigations games (of which the second one is widely regarded as one of the best in the entire series), and Layton vs Ace Attorney (seen as decent fun usually, especially if you're also fond of Layton games)
You can play these spinoffs at any point after the original trilogy
Canonically the Investigations games take place between the trilogy and AJ though
>>332426212
IMO The original Trilogy is the best.
Apollo Justice is good too and it sets the stage for another trilogy that never happened. So when playing that one you just kind of have to keep in mind that these characters were meant to grow later on.
THEN the writers changed for Dual Destinies and that game was an OOC mess that didn't really lead anywhere
The Investigations games were written by Takumi too but the first one is very stale, while the one after that (which can only be played by a fan translation + emulator) is one of the best titles in the ace attorney series.
But play all of them and decide for yourself. The original trilogy is amazing by itself and you can always stop there.

DD is pretty good by virtue of the fact all of it's cases are really solid and there are no overwhelmingly annoying witnesses in any of the cases. For an AA game that's quite the achievement. Plus it was the first game ever since the.... first... game... that actually had a competent opponent in the form of Blackquill. If you like Fran, Klavier and Godot as characters then fine; however they were all AWFUL prosecutors and opponents.
DD's biggest problem was pretty much just bringing Nick back and trying to make him the MC again. It was nice however to get some more expansion on Apollo. Hopefully in AA6 he and Trucy actually find out they're related.
>>332428120
Nah man Dual Destinies was absolute shit.

I really like the music, visuals and general presentation of this game, but how good is it compared to the other AA games? I've seen a playthrough of the first case on youtube and I wasn't impressed by the case, though you can't judge the rest of the game based on the tutorial case. I'm holding off seeing the rest of the playthrough on the off chance that I'll learn nip or the game gets localized one day, but people's opinions on the game seems to be either that it's pretty good/bad, rarely anything in the middle.
I know thatit ends on a cliffhanger, but are the general story, characters, cases and mysteries good?

Ace Attorney has always been about the character dialogues. I can't name a single case/mystery I thought was actually good. Hell, the only overarcing plot in the first 3 games was that dumb Phoenix prologue shit with the twins, the AA writers have no idea what they're doing.
The soundtrack was also a big deal for me, but that's long gone by now.

AA's mysteries has always been about the turnabout theme, where the murder cases are far from what they seem in the beginning because you're still missing a lot of information when you first begin to solve it in court. I thought several cases has done this pretty well, like 1-4 where you're given an extremely misleading intro and it's so early in the series you're not expecting the "murder that happened X years ago" yet, and 2-4 where your expectations are turned around in that what your client is guilty and that the initial impression isn't far from what actually happened.
Best case:

>>332443465
I'm not gonna lie, most of whatever you'd call the story arc cases (Mia, Phoenix's Origins, etc...) were absolute garbage too.
Much like The Witcher 3, Ace Attorney offers plenty of style in it's dialogue, but no substance in it's plots.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. Well, there is when you pay $90 for what amounts to a virtual novel with no plot that has historically awful gameplay.
Thanks, Poland.

You play it for the amazing rollercoaster rides that the stories are, especially coupled with the music hyping you up.

You do less work, you get a subpar product. DD is no doubt subpar in every department.
Don't excuse laziness.

So you want the development to be harder because you wanted them to make a new engine and draw sprites?

>>332446527
I honestly don't think lazyness was the problem in neither AAI or DD, I think Yamazaki had too much to oversee.
>>332446650
Sure.
I mean if not that, then at least hire some real writers. If you're not going for an even slightly appealing design, then go for substance somewhere else, I don't care.
DD has nothing. Art style is garbage. Cases are garbage. Hell, most of the dialogue is garbage or feels run into the ground at this point.
Not to mention the sound design.
>>332446478

>>332447208
My ranking would probably be something like that too, except I'm never sure where to put JFA because the game is massively underwhelming until the last case. I think I might prefer AAI to DD too, but they're both okay.
>>332446527
>You do less work, you get a subpar product.
That's not how things necessarily work. The first three games barely had staff or budget, but development and things were much easier to keep track of. Hell, I think Takumi mentioned in his development blog that AA had a team of like 8 people working on it. What the series need might just be shorter cases and less meddling, but with successful series you usually give them bigger budget and staff.
>>332440203
I am severely disappointed but only because it looks like the guy that did the art of PLvAA did the art for this game as well.
And I really like the way he draws his characters.
>>332447772
I think 2-2 is actually severely underrated, but 2-1 is one of the worst first cases yeah (extremely forgettable) and well we all know all the problems with 2-3 (hey, at least Acro was a neat tragic villain I suppose? about the only thing it has going for it)

I always thought that Kristoph's black Psyche Locks were a total asspull by the developers to try to hide the fact that they had created an incredibly shitty villain.
Kristoph did everything he did because he was a butthurt pussy.
>>332453623
What's wrong with a severely narcissistic psychopath being motivated by pure spite?
There are many many problems with AJ, but Kristoph is not one of them imo
>>332454226
I just felt like the entirety of case 4 completely shat on the rest of the game. Case 1 was great because of its twist, but then case 4 comes along and you find out he was just butthurt. It really ruined case 1 and the rest of the game for me. The black psyche locks were the cherry on top of the shit sundae.
>>332454226
Not that guy, but Kristoph felt too petty to be a good mastermind villain. You also have characters like Von Karma who also killed out of butthurt and wounded pride, but he did it because he saw a great opportunity. He would also have gotten away with it if he hadn't made a move 15 years later.
Kristoph on the other hand tries really hard from the start, but his scheme gets more and more complicated and he gets several accomplices/witnesses he needs to kill to cover it up, and things get out of his control and his complicated scheme leads to people taking him down. It just doesn't seem to be worth the effort.
Give him the card already, Franziska.
>>332454439
I really liked Case 2. I Thought it set things up really well for Apollo. It established Trucy as his assistant, Ema as his Gumshoe, Nuclear Phoenix as his ghost lawyer mentor. And Apollo's first case had similarities to the case Phoenix was brought down to court for the first time, in a way, he was defending Phoenix: useless child who got backstabbed by gf. Klavier was meh, it was refreshing that he wasn't some edgy prosecutor with dark past, he was actually pushing Apollo to go all the way, but he really fucking needed a character arc to stand out, instead he is just not Payne.
Then case 4 came along and all this cast became pawns in "who will rape the law better" game Phoenix and Kristoph had.
>>332454439
Since 4-4 was pretty shallow for an AA game and Kristoph couldn't carry two cases I can understand your frustration, but I don't know what you have against his psyche-locks. It was pretty neat shorthand for "this guy is too fucked up for your magic to work". A good villain is difficult to break, and having the previously unstoppable magatama mechanic come up against a brick wall set the tone pretty well.
Not that Kristoph was a very good villain. And retconning the black locks to mean something completely different is pretty dumb. It's just that they were fine for what they were.
>>332455314
He didn't plan as well because he was insane
Not every final villain has to be a perfect mastermind. Characters are allowed to have flaws, it's what makes them interesting.
>>332455794
You kind of have to be insane to become a lawyer in Ace Attorney world in the first place.
>>332455352
>This is the 2nd to last evidence in AA6
>The very last is the engagement ring
>>332455794
It didn't make him interesting to me, just disappointingly petty. Most other villains had flaws anyway, or they wouldn't be taken down, but stuff like Von Karma's obsession with being perfect, and Gant becoming corrupted after gaining too much power and taking the law too far were better implemented. There's also Engarde who had pretty simple motives, but got his ass handed to him because he was paranoid.
>>332455352
What is this
>>332455794
>he was insane
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded if they took this and ran with it. If he just did completely ludicrous things you had to piece together the last case might have been really engaging.
Instead he was just selfish. That's why Kristoph was such a weak villain. He wasn't particularly clever, he wasn't particularly nuts, he wasn't anything.
>>332456227
>It didn't make him interesting to me,
I felt the same way about Von Karma. I couldn't really hate him or anything because he just felt so one dimensional. It was complete apathy for me, which is the worse thing a reader can feel.
>>332456463
Different strokes I guess. Von Karma was simple, but I thought his character and the entire case was really well done. The entire setup was clever because it was simple and hidden in plain sight, and it was far more memorable than the convoluted mess Kristoph did.
>>332456417
Being selfish is most common cause of crime among last bosses of Ace Attorney, though.
>Muh perfect record!

>>332404609
wow that animation is terrible
>>332455983
Is there any profession with a higher mortality rate than attorney in the series?
>>332457263
Yeah, but it depends on the execution. No one's defending Alba because that confrontation dragged on forever. Kristoph isn't the best implementation of a selfish villain because his motives came off as shallow compared to his mountain of misdeeds.
>>332457581
Honestly, I liked how much of a dirtbag weasel Alba was. He was a true politician: spouting bullshit to the very end.
I guess what triggered Kristoph is that he probably was a very big shot famous attorney, and Phoenix is known for cross-examining birds. I guess what could have made it special if it was established that Kristoph was pushed over the edge because of his prestige and speicifically because of Phoenix Wright who stained it, but he remained kind of an enigma in the end and best we can come up with is call him completely fucking nuts. He probably would have done the same with any other lawyer besides Phoenix. Point I am trying to make is that their battle should have been a bit more personal, instead Kristoph felt like an asshole who destroyed life of a complete stranger.
>>332458274
I actually liked both the last case in AAI and Alba, but it just got too long at the end. That case is pretty fun for a long time.
I think making Kristoph's issues more personal would have helped, they wasted the relationship between him and Klavier. There was barely any point to them being brothers when they were so distant they barely reacted to each other.
>>332410802
wish you included armando destryoing his mug of coffee.
>>332458665
It was obvious that between Klav and Kristoph was something. Maybe sibling rivalry. Gee, I sure wish there was continuation of the series that might have picked up on this.
>>332456875
I liked the convoluted mess because reality actually set in and it blew up in his face.
>>332457263
Yeah, but you need more than that. Von Karma was an incredibly imposing undefeated giant with a hyperaggressive prosecution style, for instance. He pulled all kinds of shit you don't figure out the final moments of the case. Kristoph was just... there. And you knew basically his entire shtick from the first case. If you're gonna be the quiet, refined, mysterious sort of villain you better be fucking clever to back it up and he wasn't. Hell, he spent the entire finale already in jail. That's a really weak main villain.
>>332458837
It was honestly AJ's own fault for establishing it and not expanding on it, like with Apollo's sibling relationship tacked on at the very end. Wasted potential.
>>332458978
I liked Von Karma better because it didn't blow up in his face until he got too ambitious and tried to frame Edgeworth for murdering Hammond. Kristoph had his scheme sorta unraveling from the start, when Zak took off and Vera didn't die as a child.
>>332459264
Von Karma was boring. He felt like a one dimensional caricature, which I guess some people liked.
>>332459038
Fucking AJ, man. It played around with many interesting ideas and brought up potentially interesting plot points and did nothing with either. Sometimes I feel like I like what could have been instead of what we got, but I still like AJ.

>his motives came off as shallow compared to his mountain of misdeeds.
This.
"I lost a game of poker and didn't get hired, I'M GOING TO FUCKING RUIN THE LIVES OF PHOENIX WRIGHT AND ZAK GRAMARYE!"
>>332459524
Don't forget
>I'm gonna kill EVERYONE that was involved to prevent me from getting caught
>>332452690
>left side
>>332459367
He made an impression, he was imposing, aggressive, and aggravating for the player. He made a good opponent in court because you're used to Edgeworth being a smug shit already, yet Von Karma blocks your every move with far more tenacity. His plan was simple but effective, and I can still remember what he did and the reason his setup wasn't obvious from the beginning.
Kristoph has such a complicated plan and shallow motive I can barely remember what he did, in what order, or exactly why he did so. That's not really a good thing for good mystery plot, he just left a very weak impression.
>>332459786
It gets even crazier that he wanted to fucking poison a child.
>>332459969
And the fact that he had a backup plan just in case the first plan failed shows how determined he was to kill her.
>>332460338
All because he lost a game of poker and didn't get hired. It just seems kinda disproportionate, man.
>>332406919
Yep. Where would you put Trucy though?
>>332459868
See that slab inside the body outline, that's just slightly differently coloured? That's what that guy was talking about iirc. (you can see one of the lines of that slab next to the 2 pieces of rubble)
That one also took me ages, pretty unfair but like he said, rest of the case is GOAT
>>332460417
Because he's a batshit insane psychopath with extreme narcissism. His ego couldn't take that hit, no matter how small, and he just cracked.
Maybe this all could've been delivered better but it's definitely not that out there for someone with those qualities to act like that.
>>332400845
I forgot how fucking sweet this intro was. 1-5 had a great intro as well
>>332461315
Delivery definitely means a lot, I mean 3-5 has the glaring problem with Godot who just should have burned that fucking letter, but the presentation and showdowns in that case are just so good.
>>332407437
I'll just leave this here.
>>332461989
>Godot who just should have burned that fucking letter
>problem
Why is that opinion so prevalent lately? He allowed crime to happen specifically for revenge. It's not a plot hole.
>>332404297
I agree mostly except
>Golden court needs to be lower
>cosmic turnabout needs to be lower
>turnabout begining should be higher
>>332407039
Oh shit what Maya confirmed for next game?
>>332462448
where have you been?
>>332462336
It's more that it is simply really stupid, which he implies himself. I get him wanting revenge, but he chose the absolutely riskiest way of doing it, and if he really wanted to hurt Dahlia he also must have known that the only way for him to do so was if someone channeled her, with the only people capable of that being
a) Mia's baby sister
b) Mia's eight year old cousin
c) Mia's mother
I mean come the fuck on, he wanted to protect Maya because he was the dearest thing Mia had left, but at the same time he doesn't burn the letter that could have prevented the whole thing, which implies he wanted revenge. This in turn leads to a risky scheme together with Mia's mother, who must have explained enough to him that she could and probably would channel Dahlia. It's extremely contradictory, and even if it is on purpose to show how fucked he is it makes for a chip in an otherwise excellent case.

>They backpedaled so hard and tried to make Phoenix look like the pure, noble, never do wrong attorney who always wins clean.
Because he is. AJ Phoenix is horribly out of character because that character wasn't written to be Phoenix from the start.
he did, in a sense that Kristoph was basically impossible to convict without cheating. He went for 'the end justifies the means'.And it would've been perfectly fine had they not decided to throw it all away in DD
>>332461062
Thanks bro, finally got it.
>>332462929
>Dahlia just a swing away from exacting revenge on Mia by killing Maya
>Godot stopping just second before she could do it
>Dahlia is now forever in hell knowing she was just a split-second from bringing misery and defeat to Mia
It was really risky and I don't think he even considered for a second what would be best for Maya, he knew he was commiting something selfish and he wanted to be locked away for it by none other than Phoenix.
Just started DD, and what the fuck, Athens is fucking 18 and a lawyer. Is it really that easy to become a defense attorney in this world.I'm not complaining though, that school girl uniform makes my dick feel funny
>>332463776
I can understand Godot being fucked up but Misty really should have come up with a better scheme. At least stalk Pearl so she can't slip away or something, they knew what she was planning to do.
was he in the wrong?
>>332463912
The prevailing theme throughout the series is that the law is fucked up, and it is more generally a commentary on problems within the Japanese legal system.
>>332463912
No, law school takes like 6 years
>>332463912
>Athens is fucking 18 and a lawyer
Is this your first AA game? This is such a staple of the series that AAI2 has a character parodying the teenage lawyer.
>>332463912
Franzie became a prosecutor when she was like 14. But she was also a jobber.
So, Athena is just a mary sue. They did the thing they did with Edgeworth by resolving crime from her childhood, but they also did not want her to be old over 20 years hag. In Japan you are already oba-chan by 20.
>>332464153
Yeah. He was out for revenge and pit people against each other. It was indirect, but still wrong
>>332464228
They should have made her older, but Klavier was a prosecutor by 17, a rock star on the side and a fucking genius. He'd be a worse mary sue if he wasn't so bland and ineffectual. Athena also fucks up the tutorial case, she's the only one who really feels like a rookie lawyer in the series.
>>332464458
apollo does too considering how 4-1 eventually turns out
>>332464221
>>332464228
But she's fucking retarded. Even Apollo didn't become a lawyer til he was 22.
>>332464458
Have you played AJ? In first case Apollo feels exactly like you feel when you play that shit.
When is Winston Payne coming back and when is he going to be the good guy?
>>332464560
Franzy isn't smart enough to be a lawyer by 13 either, Von Karma lineage or not. DGS also has a 10 year old doctor who writes bestselling mystery novels, so this series just does whatever it wants.
>>332464560
22 is like normal, because Apollo wasn't supposed to be anything special until he met Phoenix. Then he became half-magical boy. Phoenix got there when he became 24 only because he wasted a year for arts. Although, if it was Shakespearean acting class, then it actually helped him a lot.
Why the fuck can't I present people anymore? I was frustrated when they removed it in AJ, but I thought they would have brought it back for DD.
>>332465187
Kek, instead they removed inspection of anything besides crime scene effectively eliminating 3/4 of flavor writing.
But I do wonder about that, too. It's a shame, I never quite got the hang of it, but by adding that they made games even more of a head scratcher. They even managed to joke around with it like how you present Phoenix Wright in 3-2.
he's kind of attractive like that
>>332466483
I really like papa Nick, and going by how DD has been so far, he's big brother with Athena and Apollo.
>>332456417
Kristoph was a sociopath fucked in the head who had everything planned and was chill as fuck.
Also a paranoid fuckwad.
