I mean, I know it's the age of the internet and all that but fucking just look at this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5apu4ML9Wto

there's so many fucking secrets around every corner, and it saddens me that modern games rarely have maybe 1 or 2.

what games should i play that are filled with secrets /v/?

people break into the game's files all the time

just look at MK9 when some guy cracked the demo and leaked CSZ.

They revealed every single character in MKX.
>>
there are secrets just as much as there used to be. it's just that they're all spoiled to the point that nobody sees them as secrets anymore.
>>
>>332395181
I mean yeah I know secrets are bound to be exposed sure, but character secrets are a little different from secrets discovered through say, exploring the game world.
>>
There's a hidden sidequest in FF9
it was only discovered by 2013
>>
Because games are linear now
Because games arent games anymore

This
Like in binding of Issac with the lost character. It was supposed to be this huge ARG thing where you pieced together hints on the sequence of deaths to unlock him. But people just data mined it day 1 and didnt even do the puzzle. It's so bad that when he did something similar for afterbirth with the greed character he forced people to do the ARG and only patched the character into the game after it was solved

because secrets are more often than not some gimmicky shit that serve absolutely no purpose but for the dev to be snob little shit.
i can make invisible platform. item that only spawn if you backtrack, do thing in a rigid, counter productive order, hide them behind illusion, puzzles that take you out of the game... too.
they are the whole selling point of the failed adventure genre.
>>
Because secrets require work, and work costs money. If it costs money, the question is "does the game still work if we cut it?" If the answer is yes, it´s more than likely gonna get cut. Usually devs don´t try to make a game awesome, they try to make it (look) good enough to sell well with least effort to make the most profit possible.

And if devs try to make secrets... refer to >>332395181

Also the internet is a bit responsible, because when people get a bit stuck in a game, they´d just google the solution rather than trying to solve it themselves. A friend of mine played through dark souls from the very beginning to the end strictly after some walkthrough.

Video games are the most experimental art form or fiction medium.

With only one, big downside: business and money. It's extremely more evident compared to films, music, books, etc..

Guys guys

What if

There's a secret level/event/whatever

But only a random sliver of user downloads get to have it

So in about 1/50 users would have the secret and since it's sort of irregular in its appearance it will cause doubt in the community with some thinking that they modded in the secret somehow

It should theoretically decreases the chances of the secret getting datamined because there's less chances that a leet haxor would find the related codes

Bonus points if the game itself is advertised as easy to mod, and some copies would be potentially very creepy and unsettling
>>
Would something like the pendant in Dark Souls count as a secret since it was bullshit?

To be fair, the autists that play that game were pretty close to finding out anyway, like a day or two away.
Ed wanted it to last for at least a year. Too bad we don't live in the 90s anymore where all a games secrets were found by your mates on the playground or in a cheats magazine.

>>

developers should just not care if the secret is shared on the internet. Not everyone goes on the internet to look for secrets before they finish the game. IF the insufferable cunts that do it ruin their experiences then complain let us laugh at them for being dumb cunts.

Bloodborne was a recent game with some good secrets.

>if you roll onto this small platform onto another small platform in this optional area's fall maze, you find an area with important story significance as well as several rare items
>if you take this item to a vague location, you unlock a faraway castle to explore, which hides another secret area and weapon if you wear the crown of the boss
>if you find the lever to drop a giant enemy to the ground, stand directly in front of one of its giant eyes, and perform a motion you obtain at the end of another relatively secret area for three minutes straight, you get a powerful farming tool
>>
>>332396697

>>
>>332397403

>Implying there is any solution
The best mysteries are those that have no answers, only hints.
PT was solved within days, you think the thousands of collective sleuths minds of the internet would not be able to solve something like this in 3 years?

Making a hard riddle takes considerably more time to make than to solve, with the three years and millions of man-hours spent on pondering on it this must have been devised by the top-intellectuals of the 19th century then.

>>332398248
these are not good secrets, they are obscure.
There is no logic or indication behind it for the player to follow, only coincidence that someday someone will fullfill a specific set of conditions to discover it, at which point the knowledge spreads.
This practice is okay though, it leads to awesome moments, but really only for a handful of people who stumble over it by chance.
>>
>>332397214
That's pretty cool, and probably took quite a while to figure it out completely

If you like metroidvanias (or games like that), it's pretty great. Liked it better than Axiom Verge, myself. Whole lotta secrets too. In fact, a good chunk of the game is a series of secret, La-Mulana-esque puzzles. That stuff is optional, mostly post-game content, though.

They're nowhere near as bullshit as LM's could be. You can actually pretty reasonably solve them without looking up guides and such.

Well there are the stats that most players dont even finish a game, let alone find secrets. There was that bethesda thing where they found most players only play the first few hours, so they went ahead and chucked a power armour in that time span so as to please people.

Gaming is just becoming too casual, or obscure like that BF4 easter egg posted.
>>
Developers think it's a bad idea to work on areas of the game that only 5~10% of players will discover when they can spend man hours on making things everyone who plays will see.
Blame focus groups.

Warren Spector mentioned it in a deus ex interview; when the focus groups played liberty island only %20 used the vents. So why make something only 1/5 of all people who play will see?
They were of course smarter than that, and did it anyway, because the game is about choices and exploration, but big companies managing big teams and big budgets are much less lenient about this shit.
>>
>>332395537
Which is funny, because he didn't actually add the ARG either and it was solved in a night when he finally did. Was just a cover for him literally not finishing.

>Developers think it's a bad idea to work on areas of the game that only 5~10% of players will discover when they can spend man hours on making things everyone who PAYS will see.

ftfy
things that used to be unlocks or secrets in games are now cut and sold as DLC
>>
>>332402202
Crouch walking through those vents takes an inordinate amount of time, I wouldn't look down on a play tester for choosing to backing out.
