Later on just lvl up for either guns or magic if you want, both aren't viable early on

i really liked the writing up to a point, the last third or so was weak or at least weaker. also virgil had a nice story. also iirc magnus had a decent story as well but i think it was sort of "cut"
Don't do what I did and play through the game blind with real-time combat on. I didn't even know there was a turn-based option until I finished the game. Felt like an idiot, and man oh man did it make the game ungodly hard.

My favourite Arcanum run was a charismatic dwarf blacksmith with Magnus, Loghaire and Thorvald all kitted out in premo clockwork plate and dwarven axes. Wanna do that again sometime when i figure out how to get arcanum to work on my new PC

Unfortunately it's nowhere near as good as some make it out to be; it doesn't hold a candle to Planescape, Mask of the Betrayer, or VBTM which was made by the same studio. Undoubtedly it's a refreshing setting for a roleplaying game, but it feels as though all its attempts at writing, combat, storytelling fall flat.
The writing is servicable at best - most companions have more in common with those found in Icewind Dale than in PST, and the few ones that are fleshed out are disappointingly uninteresting and bland. Virgil, whose "dark past" is supposed to stir curiosity in the player, remains insipid throughout the game. It looks terrible when compared to the Infinity engine games because everything looks idential, there is only one "big house" model in the entire game, which is used for mansions, factories, and old castles. All towns look identical because of this.
The music is good and so is the atmosphere, but it could have been a lot better.

Troika were the original sjw developer so it's good that they died. About Arcanum, it's really good but it has some tedious parts.
