Literally his heart and soul. Dante embraced both halves of his being at the end of DMC 3 - hence the tears and name drop.
Vergil spent the entirety of his life denying himself his human half - devoting his life to refining and honing his skills. This is why he appears to be so much more powerful than Dante from the death of their Mother all the way up to DMC 3. Halfway through the same game though - Dante slowly becomes on par with Vergil, before eventually surpassing him.
Funny enough always thought that Dante and Vergil had the same raw potential and everything - with them being twins and all. The Difference is that Dante didn't push himself (in a strictly combative sense) to avenge his mother. He and Vergil both wanted to become stronger but for different reasons. Dante wanted all demons dead out of a personal vendetta (obviously), while Vergil claims to have simply wanted power (although it's obvious that he too hates Demons at their core - at least for the murder of their mother).
What bugs me is how the Reboot altered things drastically - and had no good execution of said changes.
Reboot Dante and Vergil are Nephalem - Half-Angel and Half-Demon. You think being completely supernatural would make you even more powerful than the original versions but no. Reboot Vergil is a complete 180 from his original self in terms of motivation and character - and as a result, came off as a laughable "villain" in the endgame, flat out stating that Dante was the more powerful of the two. Dante himself just goes through the motions in DmC. Unlike his Classic Self, he doesn't show anything impressive like his OG Self does in DMC 3.
