Think of it like this, we can contain plasma within a magnetic field so much that it doesn't completely melt everything around it.

Well that's for the whole silly "we can live on it" Dyson sphere which is more science fiction than anything.
The original idea using a bunch of satellites isn't that far fetched, one can easily imagine in the next 100-250 or so years that very thin and strong photoelectric materials could be produced that could be deployed by a fleet of satellites around a star to create a solar net that could trap a good deal of energy that is currently being totally wasted.
