>>

Slow.
All three of my workmates, myself included, are in school full time so it makes it hard. But, I'm in art, one is in game design and the other is engineering with a side of computer programming, so we actually have a collection of people with a small idea of what we're doing at the very least. It's going ok I guess. I've been working on the UI using some stand in sprites ripped from rpg maker mv. I really hate python and this project has only further cemented my hatred of it. I'm literally like this close to just making my game a linux exclusive because I can't be asrsed to do anything cross platform.

My drawing skills are perhaps just one step beyond programmer art. I can design static objetcs and characters in a simple style, but i always give up when I try to animate.

The problem I usually have is that most tutorials and starter lessons for most engines are boring and too narrow to be interesting.

Quick question.

Do I really have to have pixel graphics? Couldn't I just scan some drawings or use photshop? Is there an actual reason behind all those retro looking games?

I don't dislike the style, but I just can't draw pixel art and I don't really want to learn how to.

>>
>>332340543
>>332340608
Well. the reason I don't want to use pixel graphics is lazyness.
>>
>>332340426

The reason for the retro look is usually a combination of pandering to nostalgia/faster artwork being produced depending on ur skills as an artist.

You could use drawing instead if u'd like though it in the end it all depends on the type of game you're making and how u want to depict it art style wise.

I thought the projectiles would be too hard to dodge if the character moved faster.
The right choice would've been a slow walk button, now it just drags down the general pacing too much
>>
>>332341119
I know it's a work in progress, but that walk cycle needs something done to it. He looks like he crapped his trousers and doesn't want it mashing into his ass.
And there's certainly more tension in that battle, but the whole moving at a single speed thing is what bothers me. Maybe add in a dodge roll command? A quick-slide command? Something to get him moving a bit quicker here and there. If you don't want it abuses have an energy bar on the side that's depleted as it's used or whatever.
Better tension, still too slow.

>>
>>332342683
Everything in your post is in plans for the next version.

>>332341119
For some reason this makes me think of Parasite Eve if PE wasn't ATB and a bit more hectic.
>>
>>332342919
One of the reasons it's so easy is that the framerate gets pretty bad there, since the prototype is so shittily optimized.
Undertale is not my inspiration for the game, and it will certainly be much harder than that when everything's working properly

Hallway is too narrow for those hit boxes. Also would suggest changing them from squares to circles unless there's a specific reason you want them square (I don't know what you have planned). Finally you might consider some sort of condition where if colision continues to happen for a length of time, the game reacts as if what was happening to you, is currently happening.

Keep at it though. Bugs are almost always funny to watch.

The "help" was more of a joke about being mobbed. It was a stress test for how many enemies making pathfinding calls and such would work, there typically wouldn't be anything close to that. I might switch to circle hitboxes though, and even though that's just a test map, it does highlight that if I wanted a mode with flooding enemies like that, the map would need to be shaped to account for it.

I'm trying to think of ways to give my proposed battle system more zazz. The problem with that is my porn sequences can often can 30 seconds or longer because of facial changes and whatnot, so i'll have a countless amount of sprites that will be a huge headache to work with (not to mention having sounds play without being embded in a timeline).
>>
>>332365082
It'd probably be more flexible to just make a blank model of the body, and have a face object follow where the face outa be, and show whatever face you need. It'd be more work than straight animation, but it'd be easier to tweek things, like making the videos work in all resolutions, and you wouldn't have to drop your whole engine that you liked because of one issue.

I have nothing to do with my life and no future. Maybe I should just make a game? All I'm gonna be doing is working dead end jobs and continuing school for music
>>
>>332366781
Yes
>>
>>332332106

This is exactly what I want too, but its hard as fuck even designing gameplay that works and seems fair and balanced, much less actually going through the process of creating the content and programming. Damn.
>>
I've been making a game/engine for over a decade because i'm uneducated and can only handle so much at a time, but it did and has been helping me learn and it did get me a job I had for about year.

One day i'll release the game I have been making with my engine, but in the meantime, what engine will do 2D better in terms of

>speed
>memory usage
>optimization

I'd possibly aim to the Wii U market and/or the Xbox One market.

>>

The only reason to do that is if you're on a team, or your idea is so complex that an indie shouldn't even be attempting it.
>>
>>332369061
Just write things down on a text document.
>>
>>332369149
So you just make your game as you go? I thought documents were very necessary.
>>
>>332369348
Writing down ideas helps, sure. But a majority of it for me so far has been achieved through testing and playing by ear.

There's a lot of devs in these and the AGDG threads; but are there any making strategy games?

I've seen a decent number of RPGs, large number of platformers and shooters, few other styles of games but I don't think I've seen any strategy games.
>>
>>332369348
If you make your whole game before you start, then you limit yourself to only that possibility, instead of letting the game become whatever is the most fun as you make it.
>>
>>332369589
Define strategy, cus I've seen at least 2 tile based TRPGs here.
>>
>>332368871

>>
>>332369348
I just keep small stack of papers with ideas/drawings written down on them.

Of course better kind of management is absolutely necessary for larger projects, but my project is small as fuck and amateur (i think about story as i design puzzles/levels).
>>
>>332369747

I would refer a bit more to base/city building + producing new troops then fire emblem style troop management and RPG elements, but really it applies to all of them.
>>
I started with a concept of a game based solely around a dumb gimmick.

Then I turned that gimmick into a more subtle thing and introduced a bigger core gimmick

Both of these gimmicks have now been relegated to minor. A new super gimmick is now the core of the game. The original concept is buried under a sea of other ideas at this point.

The project no longer makes any sense and has become very challenging to create, but at the same time I think it's actually a lot more fun to play now. I'm sure it'll work out, right guys?
>>
>>332370380
That sounds like an exciting development process. I'm excited to see your super gimmick.
>>
>>332370498
Trust me, you will be disappointed
>>
>>332370586
Is it a game based on the concept of free will and the object of the game is to free a character called Will? And if you die, the game starts playing itself based on your inputs thereby proving that the concept of free will doesn't exist?

He sort of laughs it off as if I became able to do all these things through natural talent instead of effort, as if he couldn't also learn and contribute. Pushing him to learn would get me something like "haha I wouldn't even know where to start, I'm not like you man"

It's very hard, because we both started from the bottom and I've known him since high school and all.

A lot of his ideas are clever and we build off each other really well during the creative process.

The thing is the creative process kinda ended and practical skills are important at this point. It's not like he didn't contribute anything, but you know

if you don't plan to charge anything, just inform everyone as so right on the start.

they will decide whether to join or not.

socialize in real life not on the web.

you will find creative people are more friendly and approachable there

"Steal like an artist" is a book that basically covers this concept. Take a lot of things, mash them together until people can only vaguely tell where the ideas came from.

>>332375713
I'd be more interested in how to do the exorcism in the first place, gameplay wise.

Nah, I wanted to make it voice oriented, you read it from a book. If you don't do it right then you get tossed around the room. It would be in latin, so you'd have to do some studying at least.

Just a suggestion, as a way to keep exorcisms fresh, assuming they are like, boss tar, and not just little mooks you have to exorcise all the time; giving all the spirit/demons a unique ritual, possible based off of what they are doing to harm the people around them like bakemonogatari where the ghost that weighed you down with thoughts needed you to remove all worldly possessions, the ghost that made people get lost needed to find its home, the ghost that twisted wishes needed to get its wish granted, etc.
>>
>>332376206
There wouldn't be that many exorcisms. You hunt things like Skinwalkers, and Wendigos. Though the only human type of monster you face is a demon through possession, the rest of the monsters are stronger and faster than you. You even travel to other places facing things from other lore.
>>

Drawing is a bit more of an trained skill IMO (been drawing for 11 year, only coding for 1) and drawing is fun so i'd start with that.
>>
>>332376553
There are more artists out there than there are jobs but probably not enough programmers and developers. I mean, in my year of around 80 students at least 35 I know want to do game concept art but very few of them know the more technical side.
My suggestion is go with the tech side first and then art side. If you decide later that the art is too much finding an artist is easy as hell.

I'm already studying engineering. I just want to learn to draw shit for fun, never actually considered a career as an artist at all.
Did consider voice acting though, because it's fun as fuck.

Game dev is probably something I wouldn't do as my primary job either, looking at the video game industry these days trying to make a living as a gamedev just looks like a living hell. I'd rather just make small games with no concrete schedules by myself or with a group of friends than do anything serious.
>>
>>332376645
I guess I'm interested more in why your character does all these things. There has to be something motivating him and an end goal in mind for him/her. I'm big on story driven games, however. If the focus is less character and more just game play then maybe it doesn't matter.

Well, as someone who goes to school for character design and illustration, learning to draw and draw well is hard. Sure, it's fun too, but it's something that, if you don't have any experience as of yet, kind of expect to need to put years into it. And it's something you need to keep up on. Drawing is very much a use it or lose it kind of skill. You get rusty pretty fast.

How hard is it to learn to draw with just a drawing tablet?

I'm bad with losing stuff and feel like my pen and paper and all my fancy art supplies would just go missing. I also hate using normal pencils and prefer to do everything with my mechanical pencil which are apparently bad for art. Though I got through high school art classes just fine with one.

By drawing nothing but buildings and inanimate objects.

Did copy a photo of Spiderman once though and did a pretty good job.

I really have wanted to learn to draw well forever though, and I do already own a tablet because I found one for sale for just $70 and decided I wanted one more than any video games available at the time so I bought it.
