PS4 owners will stand to benefit the most from what PC gamers have enjoyed for decades: upgradeable GPUs. The PS4 in all likelihood will have a Thunderbolt 3 external GPU dock developed by AMD, which is the only external connector with enough bandwidth to run a desktop GPU.
PC gamers will probably be unaffected, unless there is a sharp demand for mid-range GPUs, driving up market prices. I doubt that the CPU in the new PS4 will be able to handle anything higher than a 980 or 390X.

Why are Sony and Microsoft so keen on getting rid of all the benefits consoles had over PCs? I saw people complaining about current gen exclusive games even after the 7 years since last gen came out so there's going to be a lot more than that if consoles adapt the phone upgrade cycle of paying for a better one every few years.
And looking at it from my perspective the worst part about this would probably be transferring stuff over from your old console to the new console. I fucking hate anytime I have to do that stuff with HDDs on my computer, but I imagine console HDDs are a hell of a lot slower and it's more annoying to do than just drag and drop.
In any case seems like Sony is shooting themselves in the foot even if this doesn't have any exclusives and it just plays games better. If consolefags don't even like PC having better graphics and performance it much be even more irritating having different versions of consoles out with differing graphics and performance.

AMD's Zen SoCs have already reached production for at least two major clients who aren't in the desktop or mobile computing scene. It's likely that the custom SoC Sony chose is backwards compatible with games and apps designed for the older Jaguar SoC on current PS4.

It can only do movie streams at 4K because the R7 360-tier GPU can't really handle anything higher than 1080p gaming, but I remember reading that the PS4 update will have HDMI 2.0 output.

Not really. You can optimize the programs, games, and OS to run on wildly varying architectures (my 4790k + dual 980 Tis will play the same games and run the same programs as my client's FX9590 + dual 290). It's not that difficult or time consuming if you only have TWO iterations to worry about.

PS4K announced, it's the same price as the PS4 is now. If you trade in your existing PS4 you get a huge discount, like dropping the price to $100-$200. Meanwhile the old PS4 is discounted so cheap that cheapskates like me that don't have one can get one.
Almost no games will be PS4K exclusive, but they'll run at 4K/60fps on the PS4K and 1080 or even 720/30fps on the old PS4. But they'll still run and at an acceptable level.
That's the only way I can be okay with it. None of the fucking N3DS bullshit where Hyrule Warriors is sub-fucking 30 on the old 3ds like they couldn't be bothered to turn off the ugly motion blur post-processing effects.

But I don't think 4K/60FPS is Sony's end-goal. I think they are preparing for their entry into the VR market, which is less demanding that 4K/60FPS rendering. AMD's Polaris 10 is claimed to be within the minimum spec for VR playback and that will be a sub $300 GPU. Not only that, but it consumes roughly the same amount of power (maybe even less) than the APU inside the PS4 and can be run passively cooled (i.e. produces much less heat). I think it's a no-brainer.

GPUs have been stuck on 28nm fabrications since 2013 due to a 20nm die shrink failure and AMD has been up shit creek without a paddle in computing power until Zen was finished with Intel being too high and mighty to consider making custom SoCs for console manufacturers and ARM not being powerful enough to run demanding games.
All of that points to 2012-2015 being the worst time to bring a new console to the market. PS4 and Xbone should have launched late this year to have truly been the next step forward. There was no point in releasing a half-baked console back in 2013 when the PS3 and Xbox 360 was adequate enough for another few years.

They would focus on custom SoCs first to validate and stress-test the design AND manufacturing process, since most of the legwork that AMD has to do would be pure hardware and firmware. The customer would pick up the slack for the rest of the SoCs' development and share information on how well the integration went. AMD would then put that information to work refining the CPU and APUs based on the same process, since most of the legwork and financing was already done by a third party.

And how often did I say you had to upgrade? It can be years before you have to seriously consider it. Buying a new "upgraded" version of a console every year is just as stupid as buying the newest graphics card every year. But when you finally do decide to get something new it's better to be on the PC than on the console with the upgrade, i.e. it's better to buy the new $300+ graphics card than the new $300+ console. Further on that, on PC you're buying that sole part, with console you're paying that same $300+ price for a whole system, "the whole PC", meaning the new graphics card you end up buying is going to be better, much better in fact, than whatever is in the console. And if it's been so long since you're upgraded your PC and you need to get other parts too, it's still better to buy new parts for it than get a console because the parts you get for the PC will individually be much better than what's on the console. I've kept to high-end PC for this generation since none of the consoles seemed like a good idea. PS4 doesn't seem to be getting anywhere close to the numbers of worthwhile games I played on my PS3. Fuck, there are still games on PS3 that I should play.

I've frankenstiened my PC for years and have been upgrading it since early in the Ps3/360 life span and have maybe, maaaybe spent 600-800 dollars on a machine which could play on par with consoles if not better, plus I can still play older games, emulation, drawfag and shit, I've made money with the thing.
Its like comparing apples to wheat. One is great and is good for what it provides buy the other has such a versatile and wide variety its not fair to compare them.

You clearly don't know anything about component and interface integration in existing systems.
You can't have one without the other. Thunderbolt 3 requires a lot of PCIe bandwidth that the current Jaguar APU simply does not support (PCIe 2.0 x4 at most). Zen SoC will support at least x4 PCIe 3.0, if not more. That is enough bandwidth to allow a Thunderbolt 3 controller in the motherboard to connect to the APU, which is needed because just having a Thunderbolt 3 port is not enough to let a computer use it. The Thunderbolt 3 controller must be integrated or have direct communication to the CPU, which Jaguar does not support.
