I grabbed the Japanese version, but I'm apprehensive about playing much more of it, because I know I'm going to switch to the english version when it comes out, and I don't want to have to replay too much content.
Also I think I'll enjoy it more when I can just read item descriptions and navigate menus without having to take out my phone and use google translate to make sure I'm about to pick the right thing.

Yes. It's an all or nothing kind of deal since you're paying to use the online multiplayer functions of any game. You can get a free trial of PS+ though for a week or 2 so if you don't plan on playing it for very long you can still get some of it without paying extra.

Having played DkS1 on PC only I can say that spoilers give you direction. I mean, sure. You can play your first playthrough the way you would, going from boss to boss and looking for better weapons and equipment, but after looking through the wikis and what not, I realized that I hadn't even scratched the content that dks offers.
But instead of exploring it all I just went and built Dark knight with washing pole +15 and dark grain ring for ninja rolling for PVP.

It's because the Miracles are based on Gwyn's powers/soul. That's why you can only get lightning spear by joining the first bornes covenant. Magic is Seeths invention, to rival the powers of the Lords. The support faith spells were started by Havel to defend against Magic, because he though Seeth would turn on them. Magic build is pretty good in DS1, but I prefer a STR Faith guy too.

What weapons were you using? I had a monk with dual Dragon Bone Fists and it kicked ass. Yeah the moveset could be a bit of a pain to useespecially when you forget one of the powerstance combos contains that flying kick move sending you off a ledge to your death, but landing hits on people and stunlocking them was so satisfying. Yeah there are probably better builds but fists are certainly viable and a lot of fun.
