but they did, arcades thrived until the 7th generation of consoles.

now theyre either midway arcades where you play for tickets, or just mobile shit.

Real arcades are few and far between, existing mostly in asia and the western US

many places that call themselves arcades these days are literally just bars with old ass 80s machines and maybe a mortal kombat machine.
>>

Says the person that isn't old enough to remember not every household had consoles and internet or computers. Stuff was expensive back then. And consoles of the time often didn't have the same graphics those Arcade machines did or the same technical level like the gun rail games with gun controllers. These days even a basic console has better stuff of hand and most people can afford computers and consoles now.

That's not true. It's only true for games that are on rails. Even then, that's not the point of an arcade game: which is to get the highest score. Remember scores? If you're comparing arcade games to mobile games it just shows that you need to gtfo this hobby

I worked in a video arcade for five years.

>videogame cabinets became more and more prohibitively expensive as technology moved on, and sometimes more prone to errors or mechanical failure of expensive parts
>this was especially true for elaborate setups that sorta define the arcade experience like deluxe cabinets and racing games with FFB wheels, which could cost $15,000 or more brand new
>it could ages for a machine to pay for itself even if it was reasonably popular for a given area and cost $1 or more to play
>consoles existed for years but the popularization of online play on consoles took a much bigger bite out of the market
>emphasis on short term profits over keeping long term customers, appealing to a revolving door of families who play ticket and prize games, driving more videogame players away in a repeating cycle
>most fans of arcade cash cows like DDR and fighting games basically vanished to do their own shit over the internet or in local tournaments with console versions

That's most of it.

Boring is subjective. The thing about performance and shows is that they're putting on a display for you. They're playing a game and you're going to completely disregard that. It shows lack of respect for whoever's performing, whether it be in a theatre or on a match.

Them being chicks doesn't matter, just as disrespectful as if a bunch of guys would've done it.

not OP, but 'round these parts (middle of PA), the last arcade closed in 2001. turned into a clothing store.

was massively unprofitable for its final few years, but the owner kept the lights on out of love for the hobby until finally he couldn't afford it any more and sold off everything.

But on the other hand, work is being done to convert the IR guns for PC use.

In theory, they're the best possible guns you can get, because they work on LCDs and don't need the screen flash.

All of the home solutions that don't involve buying an old CRT and an incredibly rare PC light gun are absolute trash.

Shut the fuck up you dumb fuck. I'll give you that theater deserves your attention more than a sporting event, but as long as you're not directly interrupting the event or distracting others, it doesn't fucking matter. The players will still get paid absurd money for playing children's games and since the tickets were paid for somehow, they can do what the fuck they want. The consumer holds the power, not the performer.

>some girls pretend to be into everything for attention
>not every guy on the planet appreciates this extremely fake behavior
>feminists try paint this as a misogynistic attempt to push women out of their hobbies, even though it has absolutely nothing to do with their genitalia and is in no way indicative of being against them becoming the fans that they claim to be; it has everything to do with them being fake

When a guy runs around talking about what a big fan of baseball he is, but then doesn't even know the rules of the game or have anything other than the most mainstream of knowledge that even people who don't watch know, people openly find him annoying and a bit pathetic. There are also a few popular words and phrases for this kind of guy: "Liar", "know-it-all", "pretender", and "egomaniac". It's considered a relatively sure sign that this person is insecure and his portrayal of himself is not to be trusted.

Why should women be given a pass? You don't need to lie for attention. If you don't know a lot about something, nobody will think less of you if you just say right up front that you're either not familiar with it at all or are familiar with it but don't know a whole lot about it. This might even be a good lead in to being properly introduced. However, they WILL think less of you if they catch you in a lie, which an actual fan most definitely will. That is, of course, unless they're sexist, and subject you to the soft prejudice of low expectations.

I agree. Sport is a social event as much as it is a sporting event. People don't get mad when men ignore the game and drink beer with their buddies, but get mad at this kind of thing.

It's just a different form of socialising. Who cares really?

When I was a wee lad there was a really popular mall in my area, and it sported a fantastic arcade. But people got fed up with the owner of the mall and started leaving in drones. That was 20 years ago, and now the mall only sports a mall (which you can't enter from inside the mall), a welfare office, a gun shop, and a Sears, both of which never see customers. That was the last true arcade that I had ever visited. Now the closest we have to an arcade is the flappy bird machine in the movie theater.

Actually men can get away with knowing fuck all about something because they are given the benefit of the doubt. As soon as a woman expresses interest in something, she is questioned and tested on her knowledge of the thing by its fans so they can 'prove' she's not a 'real' fan like they are.

E.g. I know nothing about Final Fantasy, have never played any of the games properly. If I said I was a FF fan no one would bat an eyelid, no one would ask questions, everyone would assume I was telling the truth. Wouldn't be the same if I was a woman.

This article made me realize something.

So many times a female friend has asked me for advice on what sort of interests they should adopt, and even to secretly aid in adopting said interest, in order for them to attract the attention of a male they have taken a fancy to.

Not one male I know has ever done such a thing to attract a particular female's attention.

I wonder if there is some actual truth to the article's hypothesis...

Good job blindly buying into the feminist myth.

If you said that you were a fan of Final Fantasy, any Final Fantasy fan in the vicinity would try to have a discussion about Final Fantasy with you. At this point, whether you're a man or a woman, it's expected that you'll demonstrate the knowledge that you just claimed to possess. You've lead them to believe that you've finished a few of the core games, and are familiar with the core characters and premise of most if not all of the entries in the franchise. If you've clearly played FFVII and FFX for an hour each and are now trying to claim to be a FF fan, you're going to get a pie in the face, regardless of your genitalia.

The only difference maker is that due to double standards, society will rush to defend the woman if she gets caught in a lie and other people don't appreciate it.

And hey, let's suppose for the sake of argument that you're right. Where are the origins? Did guys just randomly decide that that women lie about these things? No, it would have gotten there because so many women lie about it for attention. The fix lies in discouraging women from lying (which should be discouraged to begin with), thus eliminating the completely rational doubt when a woman claims to be a fan. It won't really inconvenience women who don't fall under the category of chronic liars, either, because proving that you're a fan of a series that you're a fan of really isn't difficult at all, and a lot of those guy gamers will appreciate you more than they do their fellow guys, since you're somewhat of a rarity.

I'm not going to drive for over an hour and a half just to visit an arcade.
>>
>>332280634

Adding onto this, the reason why feminists interpret people wanting to have a conversation about something that they like as them being interrogated and probed for lies is because they're so fucking self-centered, insecure, and lacking in empathy for other people. Everything is about "how I feel" to them, and other people's viewpoints can get fucked.

They never upgraded the machines.

Arcades have, essentially, still the same games as they had 10 or 15 years ago.

Remember that one time in the early 2000s, where you tried one of those arcade racing games, even though the graphics looked like ass? So you and your friend put the money in at the same time, but for some reason it starts two different races, and the steering is complete shit, you run into the wall a few times and two minutes later you vow never to throw your money away like that again.

Well, they're STILL exactly like this. Even though you could build a machine like that which actually didn't suck just with a high end PC, a G27, Projet Cars and a playseat for $2000, but nobody does.

operators with zero maintenance are the worst

eg, playing Daytona on a machine with a broken shifter, bad pedal+steering calibration, and the link doesn't work anymore so the operator just disabled it in the settings so the machine would boot

there was a lot of that shit around the end of the 90s, they stopped caring, and one of the semi-hidden costs of owning an arcade machine is actually taking care of the thing, operators like to pretend you just slap it on the floor and it'll print money

>>332269848

One Day matches were designed to be more interesting but even then they go for a whole fucking day. Twenty20 is the only comparable thing to a normal sport in that the whole match goes for about 3 hours and that was a very recent addition (last ten years) because ONE DAYERS were seen as too boring

Nothing is going to be more nostalgic than the tiny arcade my local ice cream shop had growing up. My parents would give me all the quarters out of their change jar, and I'd go spend it all on shmups or Tekken. It's been closed for years, since the owner tried to kill themselves by driving off a bridge.

See, but if they pay attention to the game, then they get shit from the uberfans who are pissed at them for not knowing stat minutiae or whatever. So they don't even bother, they just do what's fun.

Girls don't have an obligation to make you feel comfortable when they show up to public events. It would be nice, but I don't see guys jumping up to reciprocate by curtailing their own behavior to suit what women want.

It's MAGFest. They rent out all the bottom levels of the Gaylord hotel in National Harbor every year for 4 days and set up several hundred cabinets and pinball machines, among other things. Not a whole lot of decorating to be done for a 4day gamefest that would immediately have to be taken down afterwards.

Arcades are a frivolous waste of money and real estate. With console games being as accessible as they are, there's no reason to keep the arcades open.

>But they're "fun"!
Not an argument. Disneyland is fun, but that doesn't warrant having a Disneyland in every city.

She also checks her phone constantly when we watch movies or tv. Social media is making women 10x worse.

American sports are designed as social events, that's why they have national anthems sung, military parades and half-time shows. They also have kiss cams and, as you can see in that webm, selfie competitions. You also see a lot of frat guys dressed in dumb costumes for the sole purpose of getting on the big screen.

Watch some tennis, or soccer. People are in the crowd transfixed on the action, both male and female. Look at Wimbledon and you see a lot of women in the crowd following the game intently.

Truth.

I'm 40, so I remember the 80s well, especially the later "golden years" of the video arcade. The few pictures you see can not give you the full impression of a packed video arcade; the general hum of the people in conversation, the yells of triumph, the howls of defeat, the cacophony of a multitude of games being played all at the same time, or the 80s Rock being played in a dimly lit room colored and illuminated by the screens of a hundred different cabinets. It was quite magnificent.
>>
In a local arcade you can play grid. Fucking grid 1. You could get a cheap xbox 360, wheel and get the game for barely anything and have the exact same experience at home along with an actual fucking career mode and loads more cars (and could have done this for the past 8 years).

There are a few really good arcades in Miami. Decent one in the Mall of The America's, really nice one in a bowling alley by my school, and an absolutely fucking awesome classic one less than a mile from my apartment called Arcade Odyssey. Tons of candy cabs, like 7 pinball machines. It's kinda small, but it's open until 2am weekends and midnight every other day and is always packed. >>
>>332267527
Nobody wants to spend money to keep playing when you can buy a console/pc and play indefinitely, with friends too. Arcades are cool but an arcade machine is designed to take your money faster than DLC .
>>
>>332298581
This is the kind of thing DLC, in its original form, was meant for. Adding new stages, adding new modes, adding cool shit for free after the game comes out. A software update, if it even costs anything, is going to be substantially less than upgrading a machine or buying a new one.

Mate, I visited my dad in London (lived in Denmark) twice a year when I was a kid, and the last day we would always go there. It was fucking fantastic. Tried VR there for the first time as well.
Was fucking heartbroken when I found out it had been shut down

>Skilltesters have preset payout rates, so really there's no skill involved. The claw's strength is set randomly, and in this demonstration the machine had a 2% payout rate, meaning that 1 in 50 games would be capable of lifting up the prize and dropping it in the chute.
>2% payout rate
fucking disgusting
