When I was a wee lad there was a really popular mall in my area, and it sported a fantastic arcade. If you said that you were a fan of Final Fantasy, any Final Fantasy fan in the vicinity would try to have a discussion about Final Fantasy with you. At this point, whether you're a man or a woman, it's expected that you'll demonstrate the knowledge that you just claimed to possess. You've lead them to believe that you've finished a few of the core games, and are familiar with the core characters and premise of most if not all of the entries in the franchise. If you've clearly played FFVII and FFX for an hour each and are now trying to claim to be a FF fan, you're going to get a pie in the face, regardless of your genitalia.
The only difference maker is that due to double standards, society will rush to defend the woman if she gets caught in a lie and other people don't appreciate it.
And hey, let's suppose for the sake of argument that you're right. Where are the origins? Did guys just randomly decide that that women lie about these things? No, it would have gotten there because so many women lie about it for attention. The fix lies in discouraging women from lying (which should be discouraged to begin with), thus eliminating the completely rational doubt when a woman claims to be a fan. It won't really inconvenience women who don't fall under the category of chronic liars, either, because proving that you're a fan of a series that you're a fan of really isn't difficult at all, and a lot of those guy gamers will appreciate you more than they do their fellow guys, since you're somewhat of a rarity.
