Scouting ahead in PS2 for my squad during raids was one of the most fun experiences I've had in gaming.
Learning the lay of the land so I could cut across large swathes of it our transport couldn't to stay ahead, calling out roving enemy units for them to avoid while remaining hidden, and sometimes just sniping or calling in air strikes from my buds on key targets to mark the start of an assault was a tactical thrill I ain't had since.

I've been playing Project Reality, a Battlefield 2 mod, and it has just that. Set up in a squad and get a sniper kit, have a buddy going spotter and a medic and you're doing some damn good for the team. Calling in contacts and enemy vehiles while helping start an assault is definitely the greatest.
Heavy if fighting in closed corridors with tight corners. Light if in the open with plenty of cover. Medium if the terrain favours neither type, or urban conflict where you need the armour but still need manoeuvrability.
TL;DR Siege > Skirmish > Assault.
It doesn't matter if the enemy army has massive numerical advantage and heavy armour though. Pic related. Any advantage offered by greater manoeuvrability is defeated by sheer amount of firepower.

You don't NEED mobility in modern warfare, it's just useful to employ WHEN IT IS NEEDED.
90% of the time that exosuit is going to perform better than the other two armors, and the situations in which they perform better, chances are the people wearing them are still going to die because you can still easily get shot through it.

Of course they aren't perfect in every situation, because there's a word that makes you have to decide whether you want light or heavy, and know your place. Light Armor if you're a reconnaissance unit or black ops unit. If I'm carrying a 34 lb Sniper Rifle (with ammo, grenades, and presumably at least 30 lb of armor) then fuck anything else. Nigga need to stay hydrated and be able to get the fuck out of dodge if the situation goes to shit.
Medium armor if you're almost anything else. In medium armor you can still get into cover effectively, be flexible enough to go prone, get up, squat, whatever. You can fistfight in emergencies without being hindered by a 2 ton power armor making your body lag. It offers a middle ground for a standard troop, where it should.
Heavy armor if you're Doom Guy or Master Chief.

Usually Medium or Heavy. When given the choice I tend to gravitate towards tank like classes/roles or middle-ground/versatile classes/roles, never really had much interest in the stuff lighter/dexterious classes/roles do.

I have a different thinking of what an exosuit is, pic related.
As for armor, the light and medium classes would be your typical bodyarmor with future materials and heavy armor would be power armor (power assisted) a la Halo Spartans and Starcraft marines; That's the thinking I've been going with.
As a recon unit, which situation is more preferable?
1. Discreetly recon slowly approaching army. Use situation to your advantage and assassinate enemy commander. Get the fuck out and return to your own forces before enemy can track and kill you and your partner.
2. Discreetly recon slowly approaching army. Camouflage and concealment is difficult, meaning you have a much higher visibility than a lighter armor. Before you can get in a viable position for assassination an enemy scout spots you. He alerts the enemy commander and an enemy squad is dispatched to track and kill you and your partner. Forced to run and lead them to your own forces or essentially one man army against enemy forces (defeating the purpose of a reconnaissance unit).

Basically, when we send troops in to kill off the current head, we need to keep the troops on the ground and establish a beach-head in those areas. Thereby preventing the head from growing back. Yes, i'm talking about a permanent occupation, but not in some impregnable western-style base, but right in the fucking middle of it.
Our enemy needs something to rail against. By not providing them this the sickness festers and grows stronger, rotting at people's minds and in the souls of society. By removing the opportunity for our enemies to fight back we give them every moment they need to dig in and regroup.
Although this means we take less fatalities in the short-term, in the long-term we take more casualties from asymmetric warfare and protracted engagements. Our current strategic commanders will usually pursue a strategy that leads to a war of attrition. Sadly this is, in mentality, little different from the mentality of colonial-era militaries where soldiers would line up and shoot at each other with small arms and cannons in meaningless engagements that contribute nothing to the greater goal.
Victory is just a dream for these people.

I feel like Medium would be the most modular so I'll go with that. Like I could have a weak, short-term cloak field generator and a deployable anti-ballistic/energy shield attached to it while still being decently mobile and not likely to drop instantly if my shields are down.
Obviously Light or Heavy would be great in their own situations but if I don't know the mission or level I'm going into I'm just going to go Medium and pick a general Jack-of-all-Trades loadout. It will definitely lead to trouble since there will be difficult spots that likely require something incredibly niche the other styles would've been better suited for but I feel like I'll at least have some options to tackle any of those that happen to come up.

Honestly, now that I think about it, I was premature to blame Starship. It was just another big, well done CYOA that got the hype and attention it deserved. It definitely ruined the threads for a while but that was just because everyone was so focused on it and waiting for updates that it turned the CYOA threads into more of a /vg/ thread for a game that hadn't had an update in a while. I have to take back what I said there, it was wrong of me to blame Starship for it.
Jumpchain just seemed to change people and their perceptions of the CYOAs. The threads always used to have minmaxing faggots but it seemed like after Jumpchain they went completely into overdrive on it. Like you couldn't have a single thread without someone starting some sort of autistic web-RP-god-moding-tier retardation going on. People would just focus on tearing apart other peoples "builds" in the more complex CYOAs and no one would try and do anything unique anymore. There was an old CYOA that I remember had an 3 categories with each one giving you 30 points. One of the options had some sort of small animal horde following you and someone made a build about killing everything with the horde of cute shit. There were two more options where you could increase the size of any body part by 2 inches for one point and in another category you could visit an Inn where there would be a super fighter who could teach you any style of fighting you ever wanted and someone combined the two to give himself a five foot long dick and master the art of literal cockfighting. After Jumpchain you never saw shit like that anymore. It was always "how can I be the baddest motherfucker around and fuck everyone else's builds up while being immune to others doing the same to me because I'm a bad motherf-er :^)"
But maybe it was just a coincidence and I'm just looking to place blame. Maybe it's like Starship in that regard. I dunno Anon, it's just been so long and I miss the threads.

Depends on how things work overall and what the situation calls for. If I'm some average grunt that has to do general tasks, then medium armor is the way to go. If I'm doing stealth or recon, then light is obviously the way to go for that. In the context of video games, it also depends on how fighting works and the ranges you would expect to fight at.But fuck, I'd roll with medium all day.

Best thing in multiplayer matches? Light mech fitted with jets and what was basically a rocket launcher. Hop over someone and fire down at the top of your arc. Even if you miss, the damage radius fucks them. Decently hard to hit anyone doing it, too.

Since you mentioned TF2, it makes for an easy comparison.
Mobility is a crutch for people who don't know how position and situational awareness works. When you play the literal Heavy, you have to be perfect at both or you die. There is no RETREAT option, but a heavy that is master of both is some scary as fuck bullshit.
Watch people who are good at heavy classes and emulate them. I did the same after seeing a really good Heavy in one match, and after a while you start understanding why they do things too.

Most of being a heavy of any game is being aware of all the angles and watching them. Where can you be attacked from in any given moment, and what would you do if you had to defend yourself? To use TF2 again, I've seen heavies that look ridiculous as they play like a spinning top, but holy shit if it didn't work.
Being able to aim helps too, granted. Keeping focus fire can be reasonably difficult compared to lining up discrete shots.
