Explain to a pleb what video card or cpu should I choose for a VR ready rig.

Nvidia won a long time ago anon
>>
No.
>>
>>332182597

AMD is putting more emphasis on VR tech in their new cards. Nvidia is focusing more on automobile gpus in that regard.

Buy a PS4/Xbone

equivalent cards (e.g. 390 and 970) trade blows with each other and have negligible performance differences most of the time. i guess with nVidia you are more safe to getting screwed by nVidia Gameworks but AMD usually release drivers for that shit anyway

in terms of CPU get Intel
>>
>>332182597
nvidia obviously. they're already partnering up with many dev teams to create vr games. they already have a dedicated 980 ti specifically for vr.

>trade blows while the 970 has 3.5 gb vram and the 390 has 8gb vram and runs recent dx12 games much better

Nice try

literally all the recent dx12 games are in partnership with amd so obviously they'd get better results. look at a game like gears of war which isn't amd partnered. it gets absolutely destroyed by nvidia.

decide on a price bracket 970vs390\290X for example. 290x is a bit wrong comparison, it's a better chip, but OEMs fucked up and it's harder to find
get the cheapest of the 2.
Congrats, your rig is VR ready. And you're retarded for being an early adopter

well i have a 390 and i only play at 1080p so really it's still basically negligible for me. i guess it will become more significant once DX12 actually becomes more of a thing

the only game i've played so far with DX12 support was Hitman and it wouldn't fucking launch if I had DX12 selected

the 390 is actually very bad value when you realize its literally an overclocked 290 with a better cooling solution. you can just buy a 290 for $100 less and do the overclocking yourself. it might be slightly louder than a 390 but for a saving of $100 its well worth it.

or you can just buy a 970 which falls at a price point in between them both (in my country anyway) and overclock it to 980 stock levels.

Ask again when VR is a thing.

AMD.
Async, DirectX 12.
Best for VR.
>>

Where do you buy $200 290s
>>
Can I jump in on this thread?

I just bought a MSI 970, but when I plug in my only available PCIe connector (6 pin), I get a "please power down and insert PCIe connector" on boot. If I then use a 6 pin>8pin adapter (the one that came with it), the GPU lights up this time but there's no display

Basically, what do I do? Replace PSU (It's a CIT 500W), or get a Sata > 8pin or Sata> 6pin to power this card up?
>>
>>332183693
overclocking is really shitty way to sell a card. I have 290X, it won't reach 390X levels of performance no matter how hard I try, just because VRAM is worse, It just doesn't go past 1375 on mem with lower timings, I can push it past 1100 on core, but I don't see a point.
Overclocking is a lottery. It also nullifies a lot of advantages some cards have, especially 970, like quietness and power efficiency. And you can get a shitty sample with no OC headroom.

If OP can get 290 from good OEM for 250$ or something, he should go for it. Otherwise better cooler and mass availability is better.

A 970 requires 2 6 pins or an 8 pin + 6 pin

Either way you should have 2 plugs there

What about I wanna play new shiny things on high settings?

I do wanna future proof for vr though.
>>
>>332184014
it requires 2 connectors. get Molex to 8 or 6 pin
>>
>>332184857
Oculus and Valve already released base system spec, everything must run @ 90FPS on these specs.
These cards are more than enough to play most games on High. There are some games that will not run on Ultra @60 on these cards.

Futureproofing is a meme. Get at least DX12_0 comparable card and you're good for several years if you're willing to lower settings as time goes by.

You might want to wait a month or two for Pascal and Polaris, they launch in July or something, just to see how big the leap is, but I doubt it's too big. Prices will go down either way.

>You might want to wait a month or two for Pascal and Polaris

there is honestly no reason to wait for the next generation of cards. people keep saying it like the current generation cant play games maxed out or something. the launch cards are all focused on maximizing power efficiency. performance gains will be very small compared to current cards. it'll be the 2nd generation when we'll start seeing big performance gains when they start optimizing the hardware for the new node shrink and those will be out probably end of 2017 or start of 2018.
>>
>>332185693
just like I said if he's going to wait for next gen, he should do it for a price drop, not for some giant leap. AMD said they're going to go for Price\Perf, meaning really aggressive pricing policy which might push market prices down.
