To be fair, to a certain extent the recent Japanese versions of of Dragon Quest have had accents as well. They aren't nearly as bad as in English, but they are there.

dq3 snes has better graphics and music, but lacks the monster medals and extra dungeon of dq3 gbc.
dq5 ps2 has better graphics and music, but lacks the added 3rd wife option from ds.
you can also choose phone for 5&6 if you want touch controls.

I imported DQVII at the same time I imported my 3DS. At the time I wasn't sure what firmware it would be on.

Hm? Have they? Are we talking main series? Because I played I-IX in Nip last year and didn't notice too many accents, usually just a hick accent in NPCs now and then, and that one town attacked by monsters in DQ V. I know everyone says that Sandy had a Kansai accent but I don't know what they're talking about, she was just talking like a gyaru (though there was one enemy, the golden lizard creature you fight in the desert place, who spoke in Osaka-ben.)
Let's not and just tell them to make their own fucking decisions.

1-3 SNES/GBC both are great
4- honestly I prefer NES since I honestly really hate the localization of DQ4 DS/mobile. Even with the party chat in the mobile version I still say it's worthless
5- DS
6-DS
7 - 3DS from everything I've seen. Honestly outside of 4 I felt the localization was fine outside of DQ5 boss line which was one of the dumbest thing I've seen in a while.
8 - 3DS. Yeah the quality isn't great but all the extra stuff makes it well worth it.

Actually outside of boss fights the AI is pretty good. The only problem is in boss fight Kiryl loves casting death spells. It's like how everyone jokes about Mitsuru in Persona 3 but not as bad since in normal fights he's fine. Also if you are emulating you can just put in a code to control everyone.
