FFXIII doesn't even have a world. It's just corridors and cutscenes that ferry you to them. They aren't even connected corridors.

I recently replayed FF4, FF6, and FF9. Usually when you are on the world map, you can only really go to one other location, with an ocasional roadstop for sidecontent. Every time you leave one area, the story and the geography forces you to go to another location.
Its not like fucking DragonQuest 1 or Fallout 1 where you can go in any fucking direction and do whatever.

I have played both SO4 and FFX. Both were flawed and not as good as earlier games in their respective franchises, but I still enjoyed them. SO4 had shit characters and I remember the combat was pretty lousy too, but I wouldnt call it the worst. FFX was on rails until the end and had those shitty trials, but at least the pick and choose combat was about as good as can be expected.
The worst JRPG Ive ever played was Earthbound where you waste 5 hours grinding Ness up because he has Morrowind tier accuracy and there is no way to restore PP outside of Hotels. Once I got Paula and she was 20 levels underleveled, I dropped the game. Not going to waste another 5 hours level grinding and paying $100 every time she gets hit by an enemy.

Because the path between Twoson and the cult village was filled with Flying Suacers that outsped and out damaged me, plants that stole my PP, and suicidal trees that burn all my health. It doesnt help that Ness misses every other attack, and I never have any PP to do anything, really.
The big problem with XIII is that it's continual fighting with an epic cutscene here and there. X is very linear, yes, but it has large towns where you can cool down and just talk to NPCs and relax for a while. It also does open up once you get the airship and you can go back to any previous area for treasure/aeon hunting. XIII doesn't have anything like that. It basically is a literal hallway the whole game and they don't even try to hide it.
