Can we talk about DaS 2?

http://strawpoll.me/7195212
>>
Shaded woods, no contest. I can't think of one thing I liked about that irredeemable piece of shit.

Awful boring level design, bullshit invisible enemies you can't lock onto, almost no secrets, offensively ugly to look at, dull boss.
>>
Fuck the pursuer
>>
>>332119254
Bland and disappointing game. Hopefully DaS3 is the true DaS2.
>>
>>332119254
Black Gulch by a mile.

What a piece of ass.
>>
>>332119254
What was the name of that water prison area again?
>>
>>332119786
This would be my second worst after >>332119810
>>
I'd go with Iron Keep. While the design of the level itself is really good, the first half is just the worst part of the game, somehow made even worse by SOTFS

Small area packed with ennemies that trigger from invisible floor switches instead of line of sight, to the point where you have to kill 12 ennemies to get to the smelter demon fog door. Nevermind the fact that they are absurdly fast ennemies with a lot of poise, so it's a hell to go through if you don't have a shield.
>>
People dislike No Man's Wharf? Really? The one with the ship?
>>
>>332119786
>Vanilla DS2
>can literally leg it to the bonfire, which is next door to the boss

>SotfS
>They put one of them statues in the way
What the fuck, From?
>>
>>332120049
Even though DaS2 was weaker some of their areas were really nice. Huntsman copse probably being the best area.
>>
>>332120087

Not like the statue being gone would help any because you immediately get invaded when you get in the second part
>>
The area with the ancient dragon was the pinnacle of my dislike for the game.
>The final horde of about 10 enemies all at once.
>le infinite stamina dudes while the mage is in the back shooting the thing that knocks you over
>boss one shots you
>regular enemies have a rare chance to drop their set but you won't get the full set even if you kill them all into extinction
>the area before it was yet another area that should be physically impossible coming from the area before that
>>

Earthen peak is fucking stupid on so many levels
I really liked shrine of amana
>>
>>332120727
>I really liked shrine of amana
This, it was really pretty and the theme of it was nice.
Playing on the vanilla patch the enemies were a bit insufferable and the boss was a pushover for how far into the game it is.
>>
Where is the "all of it" option?
>>
>hating on Amana
>hating on Irom Keep
Nah, Black Gulch is where it's at. All those poison spitting statues, that near zero visibility, the multiple invasions right after the other. My first time through was a nightmare
>equip Pates lance
>go through carefull hitting stones so I won't get poisoned
>shooting fire arrows into oil out so I won't get eaten
>taking it real slow
>takes me almost five minutes to get to the last big area
>"you are being invaded."
>fuck this shit
>tries to lure him back but the way is too narrow
>finally fight him in the open area
>poison spit all over
>die
>retry three times and finally beat him, but now out of estus
>go back to heal and refill estus
>come back again
>"you are being invaded"
>fucking invader's brother shows up
>repeat
>finally beat him by lighting tar pits on fire and luring him in to them so he loses HP
>but I die too from poison
>respawn and try to go back to claim my souls
>it's near 100k now from the two invaders and constantly fighting back to the same area
>get invaded by forlorn halfway through
>his poise is too strong
>about to die
>make a run for the souls
>get eaten by a tar pit saarlac

>>
>>332121397
>wasting a lockstone on that
>>
>>332121105
The shit thing about that bonfire is that it respawn a all the poison statue. Then if you decide to summon an NPC, their shitty AI makes them run into the tar pits to kill the enemies there, so the whole time they're being poisoned and drawing unnecessary aggro. By the time they finally make it to the fog gate, they're at half-health and the Rotten pretty much two or three shots them.

What the fuck is that shit, glad this was the only Souls game I haven't played.

I'll never know what people see in dark souls 2 dlc. Someone fucking explain to me because to me it just seemed to be more of the same shit. They had the best boss fights, for one. Alonne, Fume Knight, and Ivory King are some of the best in the series.

But since this thread is about level design, the level design in the DLC spots increased astronomically compared to the main game. They looped around, had lots of shortcuts, similar to 1's design. You had fewer bonfires that involved going through an area and then unlocking a bridge, doorway, etc. back to the original bonfire.

As far as enemy placement, I don't see how enemy placement is vastly different from 1. I know what you mean about the vanilla game, but I can't think of things sticking out in any of the DLC areas.
>>
>>332121498
Sunken King
>giant single area with changeable environments and multiple exits
Irom King
>giant tower with many floors
Frozen King
>sprawling castle with interconnected areas
They were all great because the core game had each motif last for such a short amount of time that it was refreshing to see a the motif stay throughout, not to mention the excellent map design itself.
>>
>>332120018
this sums up my thoughts perfectly

you really just have to learn at which points enemies come charging at you, and kite them to the doorway. it's not fun at all, just tedious as hell

Something that is massively overblown, its effect is really only felt early game, once you get out of those brackets the upper and lower bounds are huge. Then there's the fact that you didn't have to play the server lottery if you wanted to co-op with friends like you do in 1.

One thing I liked about SM is how it gives you a certain freedom to create your character without worrying about your SL.
Dark Souls fell in a trap where the most tryhards minmaxers established a SL limit and everyone followed them. God help you if you want to summon, invade or co-op if you level up beyon SL 60.

On the other hand SM gave characters an expiration date, and as someone who loves to CO-OP that was a kick in the balls.

They at least gave you a ring that stored your souls that didn't effect SM, so you could co-op to your hearts content if you wore that ring. There isn't really anyway to get around the SL "cap" that people agreed upon in 1.
>>
>>332121795
I hate that the water slows you down so much, it's not bad if your character is good at ranged combat, but bloody hell, that water can go fuck itself. Plus there's no Rusted Iron Ring in the game, so fuck that place.

>>
>all those useless stats that force you to level up well into the 200s
>tying skill to a stat with ADP
>>
I think all of those absurd dangers (and the Co-op being functional this time) saved DaS2 for me. You were in a dangerous place, you had to be on your toes all the time and you had to develop strategies to clear the places. For example I disliked how SOTFS removed the knights guarding Velstald's arena; I had them down to a science. Now you just have to run to him if you get killed.

I have an urge to play 1 and 2 again, but I'm resisting so I don't burn myself before 3 hits. This series is fucking amazing.

Have you thought about how DaS 2 would be more fitting to be a successor to Demon's Souls than to Dark Souls? The areas aren't connected to each other in DaS 2, and perhaps they shouldn't have been. Having archstones for every area would have made more sense than for example taking an elevator from a windmill to a volcano.

Also, having the DLCs as simple archstones that were added to the World would have made sense, as if now they are just rocks in the middle of fucking nowhere that teleport you far away.

When discussing level continuity in Dark Souls 2 just accept that it's a dream world. Remember how you arrived there, plunging down a rabbit hole in the ocean to somehow arrive at a little gazebo inside a mountain.

The whole thing feels 'through the looking glass'
I think they were already playing around with the dream/nightmare concept while simultaneously developing Bloodborne. There's that one message you can leave that just says "Like a dream..." which I happened to first find left by someone else at the bridge right after you get out of that elevator from windmill to volcano.

Also accept that the "Great Ones" (or Old Ones or Great Old Ones) have been involved in the background in every game since Demon's Souls.

endurance giving out just stamina is fine
endurance giving you both stamina and equip load was not fine

>BB shitposting doesn't count because it's mostly console war faggotry
Not really, people just use that as an excuse to ignore all criticism
>>
I went to go replay the series in preparation for 3, I absolutely love the armor and weapons, but the designs of the area are kinda shit. The enemies all have wierd attack patterns and don't flow cohesively with the area, and poise is just strange.

The music and fashion souls is top notch though.
>>
What was that shitty one with the poison spewing statues? That shit was the worst.

I understand what you mean but he didn't even mention DaS1. You can't just use that shit as a get-out-of-jail free card, which is what I see all the time in these threads
>>
>>332125843
>poise is just strange
Poise? what poise.
>>
>>332125945
It was an optional boss :^)

If you want to finish the game fast then just look for King Doors. If you want to get the proper ending then go back to the Forest of Fallen Giants and/or clear the DLCs
>>
>>332125843

Find the memories of the ancients famalam
>>
>>332125945
Now hightail out of there as fast as you can so you don't have to deal with a building full of very mad knights foaming at the mouth that you have killed their boss.
And make sure to not use that soul.
>>
>>332121498
The DLC is just higher quality than the rest of the game. Interconnected areas, good enemies, and some of the best bosses in the series. Fume Knight may be the best boss ever put into a Souls game, honestly.
>>
>>332126204
Pretty sure they don't aggro, at least in SoTFS
>>
>>332125945
I think this guy was the worst boss in From's history
then bed of chaos
and then rom
>>
>>332125945
That dragon was optional.
Now you have a key item named ashen mist heart. Do you remember way back on the forest of fallen giants a door sealed by the king's ring? Go to that door, go inside and use the ashen mist heart on a petrified giant inside.
>>
>>332126354
Fume Knight was pretty meh. I liked his aesthetics but the arena looked like shit and his attacks weren't incredibly hard to dodge. Sir Alonne was a better fight
>>
>>332126365
It always pissed me off how Dark Souls 2 got a lot of shit for "enemy spamming", but BB for some reason gets a pass for it, Rom and some of the early areas being most notable for enemy spamming
>>
>>332126365
>no mention of Ceaseless Discharge
Now now, let us not be hasty here.
>>
>>332126591
that was just the 3 lowest, Ceaseless would have came up pretty soon up the list.
>>
>>332126591
>>332126365
At least DaS2's bosses had the decency to be easy.
Bed of chaos was annoying as shit and Ceaseless Discharge and had its OHK attack; thankfully you could cheese the later with the running to the fog gate exploit.
>>
>>332125945
Go do the Giant memories, then go kill Vendrick, then go kill Nashandra and Aldia.

ps. dont forget the darklurker and twin pursuers.

Playing DS1 and i killed off the butterfly and then went to darkroot basin and kill off the icefags smoothly but fuck me can't make it to the hydra without getting spammed to death with those water attacks. What do?

Tried forgetting it and go up the tower near it but this guardian infront of the door broken as fuck.
>>
>>332126517
Both are pretty similar.
I like Fume overall better, but that may have something to do with me putting Ludwig, The Holy Blade on the background as I fought him for the Nnth time and kept getting my face kicked due to carelessness and growning nervous the closer I got to the end.
>>
>>332126546
tee bee haych bloodborne's mechanics are better suited to it though, you can recover hp through attacks and can get more health potions without dying.
but rom was still a bitch
also shadows of yharnam

Whoever came up with that idea deserves to be slapped. It's the most infuriating thing I have ever experienced in years.
>>
>>332126894
Use the rocks and trees as cover. It'll stop using its water attacks when you reach the lake's border.
>>
>>332126894
There's a key you can find and it leads to the lower undead burg, the door right before the dragon bridge. Go there nigga.

Black Gulch, Harvest Valley, Aldias Keep, Shrine of Amana, Earthen Peak, Gutter. All horrible areas.
But the real worst one is heides.
Just look at that level design.
Just look at that dead covenant.
Just look at one shit boss, and that other reskinned boss.
Just look at those 2 enemy types in the whole area, one of which won't fight you until you kill the boss.
Fucking forgettable lazy horrid garbage. Worst starting area of the entire series.

No, I don't quite suppose there are.
>>
>>332128010
It could just be a river that leads out above the cave
>>
>>332128085
How do you know that's the rest of the ocean surface? You don't
>>
>>332128050
When I first played the game I thought that the area was just the surface, and you'll get to the actual tower and fight fire based enemies. Why the fuck is it even called Tower of flame for fuck's sake
>>
Maybe it's a personal opinion but i hated the fuck out of the Frigid outskirts.
Except when i was invading.
>>
>>332128246
You can see the Lost Bastille from it
>>

Cheers senpai, I used to invade on the Iron Passage. Was great if they didn't use seeds of giants
>>

He's the guy BTFO of me bruh. He doesn't even come out of that tight ass place either.
>>
>>332128135
How does an underground river lead above the ground?
Either the water in the cave pools at the lowest point and floods the wharf, or the cave is connected to the ocean in which case the ocean floods the wharf entirely.
