Why are roguelikes so fun /v/?

What are some good roguelikes?
Ive only ever played 2 roguelikes, elona and tome and i absolutely loves both.
>>
NetHack, ToME (2.3.5 when it still had Middle-Earth setting), UnReal World, Dwarf Fortress adventure mode
>>
ADOM is good
>>
>>332059427

>>

ive been wanting to play df for a while now but how do i cope with the shit graphics and no actual gui
>>
>>332059427

I enjoy a lot of games which don't have great visuals, but holy fuck I'm sick of "it's a rogue-like so it has to look like it's from 1984" trope. I'd love to see a well made, highly polished roguelike that didn't make my fucking eyes bleed.
>>
you shouldn't need anything more than nethack, honestly
>>
>>332059427
UnReal World. It's also massively overlooked and more focused on survival than straight up dungeon crawling. Derpy LARP pictures included. I think it recently got a graphical overhaul on behalf of coming to Steam or something, but there's a free version on their site.
>>
>>332059656
i have 15 hrs in it but it gets too repetitive
>>332059734
beat it several times already
>>
>>332059695
For the less than a dolar it costs it's pretty fun
It doesn't really have a lot of depth but it has multiple party members that give different endings so it can be enjoyable for some hours but after that it gets boring
It has a expansion that supossedly adds a lot of content but I have not tried it yet
>>
>>332059764
Good taste anon.
Unique game. Definitely worth a look, particularly if you've got a hard on for survival stuff.

>>
>>332059736
Adventure mode is fine, you just need to memorize the dozen keys needed to survive
Then you grab a graphics pack, because the otiginal tilesets isn't well proportioned, so you see your circle of view as an oval
>>
>>332059427

Dungeon crawl stone soup is a real roguelike thats pretty accessible for beginners not like all these pretentious roguelites that are coming out recently.
>>
Dungeon of the Endless is kind of a hybrid roguelike that's worth checking out.

I've found that Bulwark can wreck shit early on with some grinding and not give a fuck but towards the higher levels they get shit on EXTREMELY hard it's not even funny. It's really just a battle of how good you can keep your momentum.

ADoM is the king of roguelikes

ToME is pretty good if you enjoy tooltips

Stone Soup is okay

Ivan is fun

Toejam and Earl is totally tubular

roguelites are gay
>>
>>332059427
There's an indie one that I found pretty good called RougeLight, where your only sources of light are arrows you shoot. I thought it was fun, until I ran out of arrowsand got stuck in a pithc black area with no enemies to kill myself with.
You can get it free here: https://managore.itch.io/roguelight

All of the melee classes start to have some problems when dealing with giant rooms of ranged death.

Yeah. The worst time I've ever had was in that one level, around 17, with all those teleporting elementals or something. Been years since I played but I remember how cancerous it was the first time I went there and died extremely quick.

People always talk about accessibility and roguelikes, but there is no such thing because it's not like they're excessively complicated or obtuse. You either have the mindset to lose everything with each death or you don't. Only accessibility factor would be having some kind of casual difficulty that gives you multiple lives or or something, which is not a real a roguelike experience.

You manage a group of mercenaries in a medieval low fantasy world

there are several items that grant teleportation like boots and torcs of psychoportation

keep an eye out and always hold onto them. Also note that there's a cooldown when you equip them, so plan ahead...

Also, more roguelikes need to have indepth combat messages like Dwarf Fortress. The best part about that game is the combat but its locked behind all the tedium

As someone who's played some near 400 hours of Dredmor, I should warn that one of the mods(Compleat Essential Skills or Bowiemancy) corrupts the save system, should someone happen to get the game and use them. Some of them are pretty rad, though! Like the Ace Attorney mod, which adds a special skillset based on the AA games as well as a Blue Lawyer Suit and Red Lawyer Suit pair of items.

However the game is not a super ultra mega pure roguelike and can rub people looking for that the wrong way.

opinion: it is extremely shit and below the level of shitty flash games.
litterally the only thing that kept me playing beyond the point i realized how crappy it was were the shitty shameful puns it has written on every skill.

i am not a guy who call shit on everything, even if i don't like it. for example i don't like many things about TOME and ADOM, but i would not never say they are pure shit or unworthy of being considered a decent roguelike like dredmor.

The Gearhead series. You get in a mech and pretty much do mech things. You can give it new weapons, upgrade it, trash it and make a new one, customize your own personal outside of mech weapons, be a suave shittalker, a doctor, get cyborg parts, it's all really fun and multifaceted.

I much prefer Gearhead 2 to 1 though despite how incomplete it is to 1 and I wish Hewitt would hurry up and get around to finishing it goddammit.

The thing I hate about roguelikes like TOME and DCSS is the completely insane and nonsensical difficulty curve.

Normal games have a difficulty curve that is a relatively smooth upwards line, with a few bumps here and there.

The roguelikes have vast swathes of zero difficulty, as you easily plow through identical filler mobs in level after level. And the suddenly there are enormous spikes when you (many times unexpectedly) encounter a real enemy. The challenge isn't the actual game, it's staying focused while doing a mindless repetitive task, just in case a boss will show up.
>>
No binding of isaac mention?
Sure, I know it is slapped in your face on the steam front page constantly, but there's no denying that its good.

Also, Darkest Dungeon, Risk of Rain, FTL, One way Heroics (with expansion) are all great.
