It won't always just be a hack and slash and a lot of missions are "activate this" or "protect this character/area".
It has a few item building mechanics, small quests, and armor/weapon buying like a real Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest is a fucking religion in Japan. It will never gain the popularity over here. The best we can hope for is it doing well enough that SE feels happy to continue to give us DQ. Tower Defence. The gimmick of DQ Heroes is that after defeating monsters they sometimes drop Monster Coins with their image on them. You can summon them guard and fight in areas or as HP restore / Area attack abilities.
So like, a portal will open and enemies will slowly flood out, and you can set a few monsters to stop that by placing them in the way of the enemy path. In the meanwhile you can go fight by another portal to close it.

It was alright but rushed as fuck. Typos and misaligned text were all over that game. I'm just pissed we never got DQ4 PSX since now our choices are NES (pretty good localization but really dated stuff), DS (shitty localization and removal of party chat), or mobile (DS localization with party chat). Personally I actually love the NES and just wish someone did a fan translation of either the PSX or DS version.
