Z2 is one of those games you get artificially good at through rote memorization and practice. You're not actually good, you just memorized enemy patterns, sword reach, how to avoid projectiles, timing your own sword beam. You can't just pick it up and be good like in Devil May Cry, you need to get artificially good.

Zelda 2 was one of the most satisfying games. I kept getting fucked by the Knights until I knew their patterns incredibly well.
I then got so good at enemy patterns that I could catch on to them very quickly. I beat Shadow Link on my first try.

Zelda II is easily my favorite Zelda, but that is a damn stretch. The game has serious flaws. Ignoring them is doing the game a disservice.

The only hard parts are fighting the blue sword throwers and all of the Great Palace. Death Mountain is hard the first time only because you haven't gotten used to the enemies' attack patterns.

You completely misunderstand the point of combat in this game. You aren't meant to mow down enemies and overpower them. Each battle is a duel. There's a specific way to combat each enemy, and if you had a longer sword it would completely break the balance between you and the enemies. For example, the iron knuckles' swords are just as long as yours. If your sword was longer, you could just attack outside of their range and be completely safe. Most enemies attack by ramming into you or hitting you with a sword(which is the same length as your sword), so making your sword even a little bigger would make it too easy.
