It might not be the exact final design, but the controller is gonna be a touch screen with two analog sticks built in. That's the concept. The oval might become a square or some other shape, but it's still going to be a touch screen with analog sticks. No amount of denial is going to fix that.

Most of the best DS games barely use the bottom screen as a touch screen, or if they do it's just an always-there-pause-menu.
There are great games that DO use the touch screen, many of them, but most avoid it and stick to the d-pad and face buttons.

You're wrong about that, the Wii was essentially a Gamecube but with all the hardware shortcomings addressed. The WiiU on the other hand is a brand new system with significant hardware upgrades.
Nintendo's problem is that they stuck with PPC. Even though the WiiU has what is quite possibly the greatest PPC750 ever made, it produced a system that was different enough from the older PPC750 hardware that it made the hardware unfamiliar and difficult to work with.
They also couldn't get a single chip solution like the other systems this generation which made the hardware more expensive and complex than the competition. They should have either done what Sony and Microsoft did and just commission a custom SOC from AMD, or just gone with an off the shelf ARM SOC.

Sadly, it's not. As such, Nintendo is asking their fans to buy two consoles in one generation. This would be understandable (not reasonable, but at least understandable) if the fallback system is something generally normal and playing it safe. That would make sense. When your attempt to be new didn't sell, just follow the market to get some money for your next venture.
But, going out and expecting people to buy two strange ideas for a console in one generation is just bad business and illogical. If attempt number 1 failed, then why would attempt number 2 do better? It's not even that different. And, attempt number 2 has the inherent flaw of coming so soon after attempt number 1 so no one wants to spend their money again.
