Who the fuck would even consider trying that in vanilla? It's simply not going to work. Even in TBC pally offthreat is real iffy (you know, because all the tanks are desirable but different, which is how it should be) and you'd want at least spriest and shaman (with windfury or wrath of air depending on your gear level, preferable two shamans for both) in your group to try to stay #2 on encounter like Gruul, never mind trying to out-threat the MT.

I was a great warrior tank, if I don't mind tooting my own horn. I was very proud of my high threat output, groups never worried about doing too much damage.
Efficient marking was the key. I knew once I was in there, I had to make my thunder clap quick, and follow up with an immediate hamstring on the kill target before cleave/sundering the rest.
My strategy was based off my main DPS I'd have with me, a boomkin. Basically, I knew I was going to lose the threat.
And, basically it didn't matter, I hamstringed for slow movement, and the ranged DPS that is pulling him off me understands his commitment to the kill target, it must die before it reaches him, with the help of the other team, while I maintain a secure and steady aggro on the mob.
Crowd control wasn't needed, group control was. Even back in the day.

One of the many reasons Vanilla sucked dick. I wanted to be a Warrior who swung around a big ass 2 hander, not some bitch boy who fucking hid behind a shield while everyone else did the work. At least I had friends in Vanilla who let me tank dungeons as Arms, but once they quit at the end and BC came around, the game became such a fucking drag for me. Early wotlk for me.
Nah no humble moments. Just lots of leveling shenanigans- friends got me to start playing, but they were all TBC vets that had picked it up again to check out the expansion. Claimed they'd help me out if I needed it while I leveled up, but they didn't really back up their word on that.
So I wound up finding a random leveling buddy that already had a 70 as it turned out. Kinda raced the guy, getting a couple levels each night over a few weeks.
Eventually caught up with my friends, went to introduce them but it was awkward as hell. They weren't interested in the newcomer, chat just died and my buddy buggered off after 10 minutes of silence and unfriendliness. I wasn't much of a help either, since we'd just been doing stupid shit while leveling up while my 'friends' were interested in pvp & endgame shit &, frankly, were kind of a bunch of assholes- they'd just call us faggots if I'd acted the same way around them.
Anyway, they were all wrapping up their wow-stint & moving on, and I only stuck around another month or so after they left. Gradually lost contact with the guy, since we weren't leveling anymore and I felt kind of ashamed of how the group chat went.
Said hello again when cataclysm was released & I came back to see what they'd done, but didn't do much more than that.
It's a shame really.

The issue in pre-nerf Shattered Halls (I'm supposing we're thinking of heroics) wasn't multi-mob tanking ability but extremely hard-hitting packs (complete with Mortal Strike debuff, have fun). Protadin, way squishier with starter gear, goes splat if they tried to just take everything.
How it is now is that you can do most instances with 2 or 3 people when you're leveling. Just need to make sure you have a healer and it's pretty easy.

Paladins could maintank everything but Mother Shahraz, Archimonde and other silence/fear bosses without issue. And as they were buffed in pretty much every patch (and they scale fairly well - warriors scaled almost inversely with gear due to less rage and really poorly even in unlimited rage situations while pallies scaled well with SP, and pallies had 16% stamina buff while warriors had 10%, druids on the other hand scaled about as well in terms of threat but due to being able to get armour capped very quickly, their mitigation scaled poorly), they got pretty good at it.
I wouldn't say there was a maintanking job where paladins were actually preferred but it wasn't just Kara. Indeed, they got relatively speaking better during the course of the expansion (from both buffs and scaling) and while they might not have been the "maintanks", they could certainly handle it (indeed, just looking at the melee damage and ignoring modifiers like Brutallus Stomp or Felmyst Corrosion, the hardest-hitting mobs in the expansion were Void Sentinels on M'uru and protadins typically were the ones tanking them because a paladin was required for tanking Void Spawns and with ~BiS gear you could tank both, allowing you to drop one tank).

Feral tanked at the start of TBC, I was a retarded 12 year old but got by spamming taunt and lacerate clearing Kara first patches not really knowing what the fuck I was doing.
Resto druid healed in TBC, easy as fuck after initial gear hump. 99% rolling triple blooms and not letting them drop while running around.

People were still retarded in Wrath and the game was still actually super complicated compared to how it is today, soft haste/hit caps and changing talents around based on gear for maximizing shit.
Moonfire ticks a 9th time if you have 4.2% haste so you should get X talent if you have X amount of haste from X gear (this sort of stuff).

Most people couldn't be bothered that why most people stayed shit at the game.
They wanted to move away from 'cookie-cutter talent trees', but they were only cookie-cutter in the sense everyone copied the top players which there's nothing wrong with.
I thought the old talent system was great. In a PvP capacity anyway, top-players would actually go play the PTR, come up with sick new specs and hide their armories so people couldn't copy their gear setups/trees.
The way talents work now:
Prune cool abilities --> bang them in the talents tree --> let people decide which looks cooler or is obviously more useful in their situation --> it doesn't matter anyway cause everything is just a huge cinematic clusterfuck.

Anyhow, tanks could solo the WotLK "heroics" by T8 so that's pretty much inconsequential. Warriors were good in T7 (not that it matters due to it being utterly trivial) but got outscaled by pallies afterwards. There were some individual encounters where warriors still had something desirable (like Heroic Lich King: Safeguard, 30% damage reduction on intervene targets, being useful for mitigating Soul Reaper, or General Vezax where the cancerous "instantly top off tank, you have unlimited mana anyway" healing style wasn't a thing and average damage reduction was desirable over pure effective health) but generally speaking paladins had better raid utility (Divine Guardian, hands etc), better cooldowns (Argent Defender is a pretty much direct upgrade to Last Stand for instance) better damage, better offthreat and better guaranteed mitigation/effective health (which is the thing that matters in WotLK).

Throne of Thunder was the best raid to fuck with people in LFR. Half the bosses had subtle mechanics to fuck the entire raid over.
I remember having so much health as a hunter with full heroic gear that spirit bond out healed tortos LFR breath couldn't kill me and I could keep the fight going all day. Nobody could kick me or do anything but die or leave.

I played on a dead server before but that's because it was a really tight knit community of 150 people and felt like a massive family but that was a unique case and I can't imagine any modern server having any sort of community like that today.

Healers literally don't run out of mana, at least not until cap, if even then, all healers have the same amount of mana because int no longer increases mana, healing no longer generates threat, or if it does, it's completely negligible.
Threat might as well not exist as a mechanic in the game, because it's literally impossible for a tank to lose aggro anymore.
