Why does Nintendo keep trying to innovate and reinvent the wheel with controllers? We've already pretty much perfected it, but they insist on shoehorning gimmicks that only detract from the core gaming experience.
Why don't they take that creativity and resources and channel it into software and/or game development, think outside of the box to make more pleasurable or unique gaming experiences instead of focusing so hard on the basic input of those experiences.

I really like them, they look functional and ergonomic. What I do dislike, is the missing buttons. Touch screen never felt good, nor tactile to me and I have a modern galaxy phone. Screen buttons don't react as fast, your fingers slide, you doubt if you pressed it correctly, at the right place. I highly doubt that controller can match up to a 4K high class touch screen of a $400 phone.
Make the controller squarer, add some physical buttons and I'd be happy as a clam.

Any game with a level of complexity beyond Angry Birds requires physical buttons. It's not conducive to a good control scheme to have to look down to see if your fingers are still on the buttons. It's why so many smartphone games are "just tap the screen to do the thing" or are puzzle games where you touch and drag things around.

I am or at least hope to. Pii U has some neat games and I would like to play them, but if I can skip the Pii U and just jump to NX, then all the better.
I'd been on the fence for buying a Pii U with its stupid as fuck $300 price tag, no gaems and shitty online service. This is Nintendo's chance to gain the people who don't have console loyalties like me or those that were past nintendrones like some on /v/ or those that want a nintendo console along their PS4/Xbone or PC master race whom have been gaming on pc for years and now want to jump back into consoles.
There's a lot to be gained here, it all depends on the games NX has, if it is backwards capable, and if it can dish out modern graphics. If it isn't backwards capable, I might just pick up a $200 Pii U and get those games I've been eyeing, simply because I want to spend very little on something that I'll only play 4 or 5 games on.

Not totally related, but this is why I'm scared if it doesn't have any actual buttons. For any game that uses face buttons I tend to rest my finger on top of the button without pressing it in. You can't do that on a touchscreen, even the slightest screen contact will register as a tap.
Now I might be okay with it if it used something like 3D touch force sensitive screens like on the latest iphones, but even Apple barely use their own feature for anything.

If anyone has tested this at all with any kind of action game, they'd realize touch buttons fucking suck.
Anyone who's tried to emulate a Mario game on their phone knows what a bitch it is to hold B to run while simultaneously pressing A to jump on a touchscreen. The touch screen just can't tell when you're wanting to only press A or B or if you want them both pressed at the same time. It's especially a pain if you have to make rapid, successive jumps because of the aforementioned reasons.

It doesn't exactly work very well. When you play games, you usually rest your thumb on a secondary button. I used the example of Mario, where you press B to run and A to jump. You usually hold down the B button and have your thumb rest on A to press it when you need to jump.
Now on a touch screen, you can't let your hand rest on another "button" because whenever you have your thumb on a part of the screen, it treats it as being "pressed". This makes it awkward to try to hold one button and keep your thumb close to another to press quickly, and trying to press one button down while rapidly pressing another is either imprecise as hell or fucking impossible.
This is why trying to emulate Mario games on a phone fucking sucks without a controller.

I know you don't own a PS4 and just hate sony for whatever autistic reason, but the touchpad is actually 2 seperate buttons, on top of also being a touchpad. So unless you say "Start" and "Select" buttons are gimmicks, then the touchpad buttons aren't either.
Unless you already knew that and think opening your inventory or checking the map or looking at the score screen are all forced feattures.
