I'm not new to 40k, no. I'm just a little tired of the lack of subtlety in the the lore and fluff.
I mean there would of been a point where the chaos influence was very small, and where only a few dedicated cults practised it.
Or maybe someone could turn the entire thing on it's head, and have a story where the world is actually better off under Chaos influence. What if a world was utter hell under the Emperor's regime, with no religious freedom or independent thought allowed? What if one of the Chaos gods allowed the people to believe what they wanted, and the society began to flourish and grow into one of the best in the galaxy.
Now that would be an interesting take, I think.

The way I see Space Marine in particular and the Imperium in general is a way to accept most fascist/nazi ideology because the universe gives you no choice. They can be enamored in a chaos god, but in disguise as some form of Emperor worship that specific to the plane. There are millions of tribal societies that develop their own pagan religions, some encompassing the Emperor and His sons/angels in their belief.
