Jump around in an arena for half an hour, then run to pyramid and literally jump through hoops to defeat the boss.

TSE was designed better, though the sheer amount of enemies in SS3 one was something to behold.

Imo SS1 is fairly overrated. The level design is almost all flat open maps with mobs for the whole game. Enemy design is also mostly uninspired and the gunplay isn't nearly satisfying enough or gives enough variation to excuse the same arena you have to clear out 100 times. Didn't hate it, but I'd take the old Wolfensteins, Painkiller or Doom over it any day.

>Enemy design is also mostly uninspired
Enemies are designed almost perfectly, especially in terms with overall weapon balance. Serious Sam is one of the few shooters where I can safely say pretty much every single weapon is useful to some degree, and choosing the right tool for the job is half the battle. The other half is evading enemies. That's what makes Serious Sam so great. It's balanced near perfectly.
>>
>>331758824

I agree, fuck that gorge section has to be one of the best moment in a fps.

When enemies start to arrive then midfight you manage to look down the gorge and the thing is chock full of enemies out to get your ass, a whole motherfucking army of them.

And to think I was about to write it off after the first 3 levels.

High priority enemies to dispatch with hitscan weapons or rockets (since they can be stunned).

Basic grunts, cannon fodder.

All SS enemies fulfill a specific niche and serve their own purpose. That's one of the reasons SS2 sucked so much: too many redundant shit.

It was made initially as Xbox (the first one, XboxHuge) exclusive and suffers from technical limitations of said platform.
Smaller levels.
Less enemies.
Cartoony art style due to XboxHuge not being powerful enough for realistic detailed textures.

Assault Rifle sounds like a Jackhammer, Devastator is a casualized faster Rocket Launcher, ammo split is fucking useless because you'll get enough ammo for every weapon. Shotgun looks like a nerf gun, Sniper and Laser are hidden (thank god JOTN DLC makes them regular weapons). I do think that SS3 is a great looking game but most of the locals are just so boring.

Don't get me wrong, BFE can be loads of fun but it doesn't compare to the first two games. Hell, I think that that SS2 is a better game despite its own shortcomings.

>Assault Rifle sounds like a Jackhammer
I had to read this sentence like 3 times because I associate Jackhammer with that one shotgun that never made it past prototype. Anyway, AR wasn't the highlight of the game, but it's above most original weapons sound and animation wise. Fucking pistols in TFE/TSE with their wooden animations and stupid models.
>Devastator
Is a very different gun from RL - you don't get infinite ammo for it, for one.
>ammo split is fucking useless because you'll get enough ammo for every weapon
You actually don't, minigun ammo is semi-rare until later levels and runs dry pretty easily. Compare to TFE/TSE, where you'll be firing your minigun through most of the later parts of the game (except for those times you actually want to switch to cannon). And the minigun actually looks and feels great in BFE!
>shotgun
It sucked, but it always was a weapon with a really weird niche.
>sniper
Devastator IS the new sniper. It even gets a scope if you preordered or bought a full pack.

>>
>>331763523
Animations are "better" compared to older SS games but still lacking in visual feedback / recoil.

I honestly can't tell the difference between the Devastator and Rocket Launcher, aside from faster grenades, which are a necessity for dealing with these retarded Technopolyphs. It's just redundant. The old GL required you to gauge distances and it let you cover the field with grenades so that enemies would run into them as you are running backwards. And I'm not a fan of the Rocket supply chests. It makes almost every other weapon useless if you're fighting enemies near it.

I honestly never run out of Minigun ammo. Then again I always hoard it so fair enough.

I don't have a problem with the shotgun being weak, it complements the weapon roaster just fine. I just hate the crappy weapon model and especially the idiotic reload animation.

Devastator has rare ammo, bigger damage, faster projectiles and less splash (but splash is not really relevant in SS unless we're talking C4. RL is your basic tool, Devastator is more of a luxury gun.

The comparison to Sniper if actually very apt because it pretty much IS the sniper rifle from TSE damage-wise, except sniper was also hitscan and did even more damage, one-shotting bulls and those not-mancubi guys (Zumbuls?).

I have to go, sorry, probably won't reply.
>>
>>331764641
>I honestly can't tell the difference between the Devastator and Rocket Launcher

rocket launcher:
- fires slow moving rockets
- ammo crates
- that's about it

devastator:
- fires fast grenade shells
- can pierce weaker enemies in a row
- has to be reloaded
- has a scope

Not in Second Encounter, all thanks to the Chainsaw. That thing basically made the shotguns redundant because it even handled Kleers better than the shotguns ever could (moreso in the HD version, where the Kleers had a smaller hitbox)

Not that the shotgun were ever good in FE, SE and BFE. Only time it was great was in Serious Sam 2, where it was stupidly strong.
>>
>>331770489
Try going up to hard, see if you can beat the games on it. For TFE and TSE you'll really want to disable autosaves. The games have a really, really bad habit of making them at the worst possible moments. Fuck autosaves.

How do I deal with Serious? knowing is half the battle. Seriously. First run, I savescummed like mad and died a lot. Once I got a good idea of when and where the enemies come from, and what they are, it got a hundred times easier.

My way of getting gud involved beating a Sam game multiple times on Serious, trying to beat a level with less and less quicksaves (because as I said before, fuck autosaves) until I managed to beat the levels without dying.

Oh yeah, you might wanna make sure autojump is off. That shit can get you killed.

There is actually a story and before and during the levels you get some infos for why you are there and why you have to to go to the next place but it never gets in the way of the gameplay itself.

It also has a surprising amount of lore.
The main antagonist for example is nothing more than a carrot on a stick that after all this years still hasn't been shown outside of his arm in a non-canon game and yet his wiki-page is almost stupidly long:
http://serioussam.wikia.com/wiki/Mental

And speaking of stupidly long, here's the backstory of the games:
http://www.seriouszone.com/ssgold/festory.php
All you really need to know from that wall of text is "Sam", "Mental", "Time Lock" and "Revolver".
>>
>>331775621
TFE and TSE are fine as they are.
It's highly recommended to play SS3:BFE with the Enhanced mod (adds tons of new stuff to the game and combines the DLC with the main game), classic Kamikaze and Rocketeer stats mods and perhaps the no-reloading mod.

Fun fact: With proper timing and abuse of the way the AI gets locked into animations, you can defeat a Reptiloid Highlander with your knife, without it hitting you in melee.
It's harder in SE than in FE because in SE they can attack while moving, but it's still doable.

Doing the final run to the pyramid, on serious, Knife Only, was some of the most intense shit I've ever done.

>Jerp how can defeat red mech with knife
If you've only got 2 it's easy - get them in a line, so the front bodyblocks the back's shots. Jump towards the front one when it fires its missiles at you (it fires its missiles AT you, so being off the floor means they won't hit you with the splash), slash it once or twice, retreat, and jump towards it again when it fires at you.

You can even knife fight Beheaded Kamikazes with proper terrain - though it's less of a knife fight and more of a terrain abuse because they'll blow up if they get close enough to you, even if there's a wall between them and you.

Wow, thread is still alive! Apart from mechanoids being able to dodge rockets (which another poster already mentioned), if you shoot Khnums with the RL, they do that fast shoot-dodge which is damn hard to avoid and with the damage Khnums do that is lethal. Plus, you need to reload it.

Personally, I think it's more of a sniper replacement (I'm repeating myself, I know), and GL, which was useful but not very exciting, was replaced by C4, which feels really fun to use. Though I guess C4 is also a bit of a Serious Bomb?

Woah, you replied to two of my posts.

Maybe it was just me but the games had a really annoying habit of saving at really inconvenient times and because the game stops for a moment while autosaving, I ended up taking damage that I could've avoided.
Also if you want real fun try doing it without any saves. Makes beating levels a lot more satisfying and really encourages you to git gud.

Being in close quarters with a Khnum isn't as bad as it sounds. If you've got enough C4 (takes 3 blocks to kill one) then it's as good as dead. If not, it's just a matter of running, firing rockets/devastator shells (because the cannon would make it kinda trivial) and knowing how to dodge their attacks.
>>
>>331780886
>Also if you want real fun try doing it without any saves.
Nah, I'm not serious enough for that. I spend 20-50 tries on some checkpoints!
>If you've got enough C4 (takes 3 blocks to kill one) then it's as good as dead.
I tend to misjudge C4 radius and blow myself up with the Khnum in the process.
>>
>>331781070
Just detonate it when there isn't a C4 indicator on the screen. If the Khnum is chasing you just keep running, after a while it will start charging his fireball attack which is when you want to detonate the C4 and stick another block on it. If you didn't know, you can stick two blocks on it at once so hopefully you'll only need to do the running thing once.
>>
>>331781567
Well, that's probably fine with one Khnum, but if there are several I really prefer ranged options. Especially if it's Khnums + Kleers, like in the last level of BFE - a deadly kombo.

The head of the Kamikaze has been ruined, therefore, it is employed for suicidal attacks, in the form of defragmentation grenades. In combination of both this and the scream produced by the LCU's basic vocal synthesizer, Kamikazes can both confuse and instill fear in enemy forces. Never had a problem with that part. You get enough Cannon and Devastator ammo at that point so you can just outright nuke any Khnums that pop around the corner, and the Kleer don't really come in a dense enough pack to be a problem so you can just hammer,, use the mutilator or just rocket them.

BFE's final level really isn't all that difficult, just long and really boring at some parts (like the beginning waves, the witches, and the valley with the bugs)

I always end up misjudging Khnum's fireballs, seriously, those things deal like 100 or more damage and there are 3 of them! But yeah, I don't think it's that great of a level.

I actually liked the part with bugs because they make an attempt at cutting off your retreat... but you can just jump over those bugs and are free to kite again.

Think that my major problem with BFE, outside of some of the game mechanics and some enemies. Because the game never really 'locks' you into a fight, you are giving the whole map to move around in. And with the sprint allowing you to move just below the Kleer's movement, you can outmaneuver pretty much every enemy in the game and turning most enemies into a joke. Not that the past games didn't have enemies that weren't a threat, just not as many.

Oh god, thank you. That's the biggest problem of BFE, so many people rant about AR having reflex sight or first levels or weak-ass hitscanners, but this here is the biggest falling of it, as far as I am concerned. I really hope they won't be shy of shutting the doors behind you in 4 and making it about surviving the arena.
>>
>>331782243
I've never taken damage on the boss. You move so fast and you're never close enough to any of the enemies for them to track you properly. Are you spending most of the time on the ground?

Sometimes I just fly through projectiles and die. Boss projectiles, I think? You have to spend some time on the ground, and that sometimes gets me.

TFE - Best SP experience
TSE - Best co-op
SS3 - Best introduction into the series

System Shock 2. A pretty good game, though the gameplay isn't great.
>>
>>331785737
SS2 is a genuinely solid entry to the series that gets a lot of blind hate. It's just as good as any of the other games. The core gameplay is still there. I enjoy it a lot and wish more people were up to co-oping it.

This should be changed to one continuous AAAAAAAAAAAH that goes on for two lines across the panels, instead of 2 separate ones.

SS2 for the varied setpieces and gameplay
BFE for the graphics and better Kamikaze screams

A lot of what keeps SS3 from being 10/10 for me is the terrible indoor ruins sections that create lulls between the action segments. The levels are twice as long as TFE's. I figure they should just cut all the levels into two parts and remove the indoor sections. Then the game would be just as good as TFE.

So guys, I played SS both encounters and SS2 but never played BFE, is it good? Why is the critic score so bad compared to the first one?

Also, is the game too hard on the computer or can it run well on average? Because my computer is kinda shit desu.

Because games journalism in 2001 was different to what we have now.

The Serious Engine has always been extremely scalable. Turn enough settings down and it should be alright.

When did that happen?

And be glad you weren't around before the group split, when our future leader was obsessed with Moonman and every fucking time, every single fucking time we were doing the TFE campaign and got to Moon Mountains he would put a bunch of Moonman songs on the synctube for that level. I mean like a bit of Moonman myself but most of the songs are fucking garbage and he didn't seem to get that.

I actually picked up all the games and started with SS3.
Knew it was a prequel going in, so I thought it would be okay.
I'm actually nearing the end, at least I think I am, and I'm just losing all will to actually beat this shit.
These fucking skeleton assholes are possibly the most annoying, unfun sacks of shit I've fought in an FPS.
The rest of the game, (apart from the dark, flashlight, monkey-infested tunnel segments), has been great, but any time I have to fight large packs of these skelefuckers I just want to stop playing.
Should I push through and actually beat this game or what?

You should get good. Not even memeing. Yes, they're punishing, but that's what makes them good. Use powerful weapons like minigun, devastator, C4, cannon to deal with them. Well, and RL, but RL in Sam is less of a "powerful weapon" and more of an "average weapon you use when shit sort of hit the fan but not really".

The First Encounter has been described as Kleer: The Kleerening, so yeah. And the game is much more stingy with space, and you can't sprint, meaning you can't run away from Kleers. And Kleers spawn not just in front of you...

>>331802887
I am not a clever man!
