It tells the story through the world itself. Players want to go into that spoopy cave not because an NPC told them to but because they genuinely want to know what it is there. That is the best kind of story telling you can have in video games.
Movies and literature? You just watch a guy as he goes on his joourney, you are effectively a fly on the wall as a bunch of shit happens. But in video games, you ARE the hero of the story. All the challenges are overcome by YOU. Souls capitalizes on this by almost never taking control from the player in any regard.

I'm spoiling much of the game for myself by watching these badly playing japs streaming it but DaS3 is as good as I hoped it to be on the PvE side. Early bosses can be beaten fairly easily unless you are really bad but apparently some bosses only drop the good stuff if you do it the hard way and don't beat them using their weaknesses/weak parts.

I absolutely hated the fact that the ACTUAL story doesn't make sense when you relate it to DS1 in some cases. Too many gaps that needed to be filled in, and now they made even more gaps.

Do we know if the NPC stories are better than Bloodborne yet? Alfred and Eileen were great but they needed at least one more unique encounter for each before their resolutions.
