Awakening is by far and away the easiest FE game all they really do is put counter on everything late game to make it a "challenge" and the maps aren't anything complicated
But yeah you can infinality grind as long as you can buy the reeking boxes (idr what they are called) and even then you don't need them half the time.

Awakening and Fates can be played on their own to enjoy the content. You might not get some references like selena's homeland, but that's ok cause they aren't too much of a focus.
Awakening has a better story, but pair up can break the game making it too easy. Still an ok entry to the series to get your feet wet.
Also, since you haven't played any other fire emblem, I suggest you emulate fire emblem 7, which I think is just gba fire emblem. It's a much better entrance to the series, with complete content, better characters and just enough difficulty to make you use your head a bit but still have fun.

It has the casual mode if you want it except the game is actually balanced properly for the most part.
Awakening is an easy game in that it's a broken mess with stupid mechanics and garbage maps and the second you realize how to exploit the mechanics it just becomes a boring slog as you just mash end turn and watch all the enemies just die against your invincible units.

I did Birthright on Normal Classic and it never once felt even remotely difficult until the final battle, and that was only because all of the enemies were suddenly twice as strong as before. I only had two strong characters left by the end due to some unfortunate crit deaths, though.
That being said, I still beat it in like 3 turns after I decided to just sacrifice people as meat shields and bash the boss with my strongest unit.

I'm about 2 hours or so into the fan translated Jap version. It's good but the only thing that hasn't been translated that I've seen is the support conversations. Also I don't like Jap cutscenes and voices when I don't know what the fuck they're saying.

Just do the Jap version with NoA text. The only odd problems with it have to do with My Castle (the food you give Lilith doesn't show up, some of Lilith's lines are put in incorrectly, sometimes commas appear as ?, and petting isn't translated).
But if you really just don't care at all, go ahead and get the US version. It's really not that bad and it'll be much easier for you to use.

Unless your Silas is a Great Knight, he won't be doing much for Elise's already unsalvageable's defense. Hell, I'd say, don't even bother, she's not gonna survive most physical attacks anyway. Rule of thumb for mages in this game is: unless your mage has natural high defenses and is a sorcerer equipped with Nosferatu, NEVER leave them in a position where they can be attacked next turn. They are frail as shit and a lot of enemies come equipped with Certain Blow, so don't count on your luck to deal with physical attacks.
Not sure how I feel about wasting Benny as a support unit. I'd say, if you are serious about not wanting children, then plan on building your supports around what classes you need for your first gen characters. I personally like Felicia as a Dark Knight since that still makes her a reliable mage Killer AND an unit that can actually survive an enemy phase, but you need to pair her up with someone that will give her that class.

2. I'm not reclassing anyone, only promoting into classes they can by default. Played most FEs and that's what I'm used to, didn't even reclass in Awakening until my fourth playthrough.
Thanks for the advice though, I'll reconsider compensating for weaknesses and focus on buffing strengths as I did in Birthright, just thought I'd need to be more careful in Conquest. I do like playing risky with my mages though -- turning Mist into one of the horsemen of the apocalypse was one of my greatest pleasures.

3 points to be made:
1)While her base stats are good and has very nice growths, she does not have Xander level of defense and a stupid Prf weapon. However, paired up with a def tonic which is dirt cheap makes her an incredible mobile tank. A good pair up combo for her is Flannel/Keaton. They benefit each other greatly
2) Renevant/Malig Knight sacrifices some def/strength for magic/res. Get her the level 5 skill then reclass her as Wyvern lord. She will gain def and HP more reliably
3) Silas is again a reliable mobile tank. His only RNG risk should be his speed.
Effie and Keaton are amazing tanks, but she can almost match it as a flying unit, so do not give her up easily

I've always thought that unit permadeath in conjunction with the limited sources of new units, heavy investment of resources you're expected to put into existing units, and almost completely reactive AI overall made for bad design. It encourages you to play as slowly and defensively as possible to avoid losing units, and the passive AI almost never forces you to try a different strategy. I understand that a lot of people don't like it but in my opinion Casual is a good thing because it gives you the option to try a strategy other than the Crawling Meatgrinder.

My first game was Sacred Stones. I did get Awakening some years later but never really did play it, Conquest I got next and have really gotten into.
