Just stop. Valve isn't a game developer anymore.
They make so much more off of steam than they ever did developing games.

Plus if it comes out everyone would hate it because it can't live up to the impossible amount of hype and unrealistic expectations. I once saw a rumor that they were developing a sign language mechanic to communicate with NPC characters. That's the type of shit you hear about vaporware that's NEVER coming out.

The smartest thing they can do as a company is to pretend it doesn't exist and hope everyone slowly forgets about it.

This happens all the type when something is hyped for years. Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Duke Nukem Forever, every MMO for the past decade, etc. The longer between games, the bigger the disappointment and the wait for HL3 has been ridiculous.
