Well it's more of a symbiosis thing. Cat's basically started living alongside humans because of their pests like mice and stuff that was attracted to grain stores. By doing this they started shaping by evolutionary pressure into something that could live by humans. Like first encounter: the bear will find your place and search it, trying not to get hurt. Eventually the bear wanders off.
Second encounter: the bear really wants to find a way inside your shelter but will still flee immediately when hurt.
third encounter: the bear either is scared off from a distance or will attack you brutally but will still fuck off when you get him maybe 25% down.
fourth encounter: the bear either is scared off from a distance or will attack you brutally until dead
