Wouldn't this kind of procedure render him permanently blind? I mean, the needle goes practically perforates his iris.

Besides, the game tells you that the needle is only there to activate the marker codes in Isaac's brain, so why wouldn't the needle go the lobotomy route of getting to the brain?

you're accuracy with weapons is actually slightly reduced after this scene

Geez, thanks for the heads up, i figured it would be unnecessary to state "in that eye" because you can visibly see only one needle penetrating only one of his eyes.

I can't recall having any worse accuracy after this scene, though.

Its videogame about a big rocks that emit radio signals that make zombies.

The procedure was basically just to make people wince and cringe.

Also, it's future science. He dont got to explain shit.

Visceral are great and all but if they did add such a miniscule detail into the game i think they would actually make it a bit more pronounced.

I'm pretty sure that poking needles in people's eyes without making them bind is something we can do today

The idea of the entire Dead Space franchise was to make people wince and cringe. I remember the second game having an advertising campaign where they showed a ton of gore footage to middle-aged women and filmed their reactions.

He probably got his eye replaced between DS2 and DS3

After Ellie loses an eye from that crazy guy in DS2, she tells Isaac "You owe me an eye you bastard". By the time DS3 comes around, she has two eyes again

I think its safe to say they have organs grown in labs and stuff that they can use for transplants in the DS universe

There is no way that the needle reaches the lateral geniculate nucleus as it seems to indicate, without causing massive damage to the eye, optic nerve, brain, or any mix of the above.

That being said, I'll fucking suspend reality for something that skin crawlingly creepy
>>
>>331603841
I put it into google and apparently the cornea is top in fast healing followed by the tongue

I suppose seeing things is quite important, also the cornea is rather thin and requires few cells to heal
>>
>>331603938
Yeah, i thought about that possibility being quite likely, but i was mostly just asking about the technicality behind the injection, as in what would happen to his eye if that actually happened. Was essentially after what >>331604405 managed to answer.

Interesting stuff, but can the eye take much trauma?
>>
>>331604932

So my guess is first off the cornea and lens are absolutely fucked. Enjoy that massive needle hole.

But worse than that, once that needle is in the eye, its gotta go out somewhere! You punch out too high and there's a nice hole in your retina. Too low and you can just fuck up the optic nerve itself.

The needle seems to be heading towards a very specific part of the brain, which, if it wants to reach "safely" would have to follow the path of the optic nerve. But this area of the brain is about 2/3 of the way back in there, so better hope that needle has charted a good course, otherwise you are plowin through memories of how to read and do other stuff good too.

Not to mention the length of needle that enters his eye wouldn't reach anywhere NEAR that area of the brain.
>>
>>331608169
And actually to further explain, yes the pupil is a "hole" in the iris, so the idea of getting the needle in the "hole" is neat and all. But there is a shit load of other important shit in the way of that needle.

Like you know

Your lens.

for focusing shit so you can see.
>>
>>331608169
Thanks for the detailed answer, you've managed to answer almost all of my questions but i simply have this left to ask;
Would he still technically be able to see provided his optic nerve is intact, or would the cornea et al be too damaged to "redirect light" to the optic nerve?

I'm currently taking an advanced human biology course so i don't exactly know how the eye works, but to know the ins and outs of such a gruesome procedure would be somewhat fascinating.
>>
>>331608713

Well I'm by no means an expert, but my understanding is that with injuries to the cornea and lens, the result is screwed up blurry/double/wacktastic vision.

Gigantic fucking needle aside, a single penetration of the eye through the cornea, even damaging the lens, would still allow vision, but my guess is if like the webm, that eye would be pretty much useless. But yes, still see movement, blurry shapes and light.

If you cream a portion of the retina on the way through, you would flat out get a blind spot. So again, blurry plus blind spot aint helping.

If it nailed the optic nerve, well that eye is just done. Regardless of previous damage.

Another damning thing is the through and through nature of the injury. Its not just a little poke. You have a perforating injury in the eye.

Untreated ruptured globes almost always result in loss of function of the eye. Enjoy this little tidbit on how to help patients with penetrating eye injuries while awaiting treatment.

"Keep the person calm, again so pressure (ie. valsalva maneuver) does not increase and extrude eye contents"

>extrude eye contents
>>
>>331610161
Good lord it's even cringier to think about your eye contents being extruded through a hole than to watch that webm.

Anyway, that just about answers my question; thanks for your intricate explanation of what happens by literally stabbing yourself in the eye, doctor anon.

my game looks different, he must be shooped. I can tell by the red outline
>>
>>331610632

Glad to be of any help, even if I'm not 100% accurate. Injections in the eye are a super common occurrence, and retinal surgery or vitrectomies (slurp out goo in eye and replace with other fluid) are also very common, and involve quite extensive cutting into the eye

The thing that makes the dead space needle bad for his vision is mostly that its right directly through the lens, with a huge gauge needle. No post op repair work. And the fact that it skewers through the entire eye, front and back.

That and you know.

The whole needle in the brain thing.

But hey, the scene is creepy as fuck. So whatever. If the decreased aim thing was real that would be a really cool easter egg. Just assuming he pretty much fucked that eye and was working off of one good eye.

That would be really cool.
