Is Dark Souls actually fun, or is it just frustrating?
It is fun, but the gameplay is literally the worst in the series. The big appeal is exploring and adventure.

This pretty much. Once you stop blaming the game for every little bad thing happens and take responsibility for your own actions it ceases to be frustrating in the way people make it out to be. Of course if you are going around acting like you should never die and screaming the game is bullshit everytime you do you will just be getting worked up.
