Can we agree that 999 is superior in almost every way to VLR. I mean, VLR's story towards the end was such a dribble of metaphysical, time-theory mumbo jumbo to a point where I was just sick of it. Not to mention how retarded it is that Sigma is the only character that does not get rewarded in the slightest for betraying others and escaping.
K, Dio, Clover, Gramps and even Quark manage to escape without a problem even when betraying the entire cast in at least one ending.

I played both games in a few days and I have to say, while 999 instantly throws you into the action, VLR beginning is slow as fuck. for a lot of reasons: 999 nonary game was way simpler and imho, way cooler. VLR has to drag you into its system because of its more complex nature. that said, I think it pays off in the end. the consciousness time traveling thing was expected by the time you reach Phi's ending and I was curious how would they try to get out of that mess. I was satisfied, but confused. Had to read everything twice or some shit.
tl;dr I think they're both pretty good but 999 is the superior game

999 had violence in it, but it didn't go full-on slasher movie style and show it all off it in your face like this is doing. The way they cover everyone in blood looks ridiculous. And the emphasis on death traps isn't like 999 at all. 999 just had explosions as a penalty for breaking the rules, while the game in this is stuff like "You have to either let Phi burn to death or shoot Sigma in the head!"
Is anyone else bummed out that ZTD won't be a visual novel anymore? I have no problem with cinematic story games, but since the prior two games weren't it just feel like an unnecessary change.

The CGs were enough to show gory stuff if they really wanted to. There were a lot of them, including ones that showed dead bodies. But they didn't emphasize flashy gore. They went for description if they wanted to get across something really gruesome, and the dead bodies they did show were pretty light.
The point here is about the presentation, not just the amount of times people die or how violent the deaths themselves are.
The way everyone survived is by remembering passwords from other timelines where people die.

The game is more in line with 999 atmosphere, VLR was the game that attempted to pander by softening up the brutality so that pansy ass Japs wouldn't get scared away from it like they did with 999, you pleb. While I enjoy the RNG due to adding actual risk to choices, I can see it potentially being really annoying if you keep getting one result over and over, so that's kinda valid, but the QTEs are there to force you to pick with your gut. Comedy is still in, Eric had some funny scenes, and Siggy had some dark humor, in addition to the standard "click multiple times" jokes. Gore is certainly a bit more explicit, but it's not completely without subtlety. The Siggy death scene is pretty restrictive with its camera angles, it's not like you see Siggy's head get blown right off. This is probably bait, but you legitimately got a rise out of me, congrats.

Abstaining will either penalize you or force you down a route by default, depending on the setup of the Decision. In the Siggy/Phi case, Phi is locked in an execution chamber, and the door will only open if it hears a gunshot. If you don't risk killing Siggy, the door remains locked, and Phi will presumably put on her best Sigurd cosplay. The atmosphere we've seen doesn't look anything like 999. 999 was more mysterious and vague, with some combination of creepiness and comfiness. The deadly situations were pretty far between and mostly reserved for bad endings, with most time being spent on investigation and discussion. Violence was a factor, but not the focus.
And it's not even as if VLR softened things up so much. The major thing was just that the penalty was a lethal injection, rather than an explosion, which tied into the story. You still had plenty of people getting stabbed and committing suicide, as well as instances of someone taking an axe to the head and and someone's arm being crunched off.
But this time, the entire game in this is based around killing people. It's literally "You must kill this many people to pass." The choices amount to "Who are you going to kill? (or maybe the RNG will save them)". "Woo, look at how many death traps there are." It's pushing flashy blood and gore into the forefront so much that Uchikoshi's talked of it being the first Z-rated 3DS title.
I think the comedy in the trailer is sadly unintentional, from the poor model animation and voice acting. It doesn't look like we're supposed to be laughing at it.

VLR's penalty for failing to escape was "be trapped in this place with a bar, rec room, giant snack zone, advanced med bay, etc."
It's been mentioned before that there might be ways to escape that don't require death either. The choices will definitely push it a lot more, but you can TRY to avoid deaths too, or at least manage your risks.

Well, basically, my concern is the atmosphere moving from "suspense mystery novel" to "slasher horror flick." Not just how much death there is, but how it's carried out. Death has always featured prominently in the series, but I feel that it's not really the same thing as in this game. Only for a little bit. It was really lopsided and odd. Instead of having specific boxes for each scene or puzzle though, each fragment basically has its own bubble. So, you have your big global flowchart made out of a bunch of little bubbles. You click on a bubble, then it'll zoom in and show you all the little parts of the fragment so that you can warp to specific parts in it. One of the journalists let the demo sit for a while, and it actually played an intro with its own song. It was this sweeping sad song that got more and more intense as it went along, with the music kinda peaking in waves that came one after another. Other than that though, I honestly don't remember. Every time I go through one of the OSTs, I usually end up just looping one of my favorite ones and I forget to listen to the rest.
