I was removed from the guild about two weeks later for "not keeping up with good gear progression" as I "still did not have a tier-two chest piece."

Needed for at the time the hardest thing in the game, final part of the Paladin Charger chain. This was before a billion Paladin changes, PBD change, and many other changes.
You had to somehow obtain of a PDB which maybe dropped like once a week and you'd never be able to afford it (was nerfed to the point it dropped every 5 seconds). Then afford the Arcanite bars or ore.
Then after DM you had to hear to get to the basement in old Scholo with 3 other Paladins (4 total) and a tank to do a perfect judgement rotation or you were fucked.

Ret and prot did not exist in classic (reck bomb doesn't count), and even in full tier 6 in TBC you'd go out of mana on a fight like Prince, so you weren't even viable.
If you had high DPS you could be quasi viable dps in 5mans though.

Ret Pallys were fine in TBC. I should know I was in for BT and Sunwell. Everyone forgets about Judgements so you'd have your holy pallys toss a JoW and JoL and your entire raid loses mana problems and gains healing because Crusader Strike refreshed all Judgements.

We used dkp for a long time.
The problem is assigning value is both arbitrary and different for everyone involved.
The other problem is classes with equipment dependency vs. those who didn't need it, leading to very stocked dkp pools vs. perpetually empty ones.
We used dkp for a while.
Eventually, we switched to a pure attendance system, for which we had our own mod. If you were at 80%+ attendance (allowed everyone to take a night here and there) and sent a tell for an item, you rolled against everyone else in that tier. You got 1 item per week like that, everything beyond that you rolled against all secondary rolls.
Was far smoother. Literally zero problems.

My guild in vanilla just had a system where everyone who wanted to bid on an item whispered the loot officer, whoever had the highest total DKP won the item, and then a set value was deducted from their total- and this could drive you into the negatives. The system really only punished people who weren't consistently active.

I mean, that was obviously unsustainable, but why the hell did they butcher unholy so much? It used to be all about turning yourself and others into ghouls, raising the dead to serve you, all of that necromancer-lite stuff. If you died, you became a ghoul. If an enemy died, they became a ghoul minion. If your buddy died, they became a ghoul they could control themselves.
Now the ghouls are shit-tier hunter pets, the DK can't become a ghoul, and instead of raising buddies we just get a shitty fucking battle-res that turns the target transparent. Literally stripping Unholy of fun while fucking over druids.

Fear Ward was damn good but largely negated by just having your tanks learn to stance dance for most encounters.
