Sonic Blew up the REAL Chaos Emerald and the reason that Shadow fell to Earth is because the fake emerald didn't have the TRUE STRENGTH as the real one did. Which is why Shadow (being new to the Super Form.) didn't last long. Thats my theory anyway.

I felt disappointed at first when i got the ps3 version as well. It really sucks when you realize something you love wasn't as good as you remember it being.
After I accepted the fact that it wasn't really that good though I found myself really enjoying it again. Remembering all the lines that everyone quotes from it and how hilariously awful the audio mixing is. The story which is almost like watching shonen and how fucking amazing the soundtrack is. Also I played that game so much as a kid that I pretty much had every stage memorized so I never was frustrated since I knew how to handle every one (except Mad Space that one still sucks ass).

God, that game could have potentially been hilarious and legitimately good if they had played Shadow's dour edgelord personality for laughs. Shadow being a sullen fuck is a source of humor in the Archie comics. Sega doing the same with StH would have demonstrated a great deal of self-awareness. Sega ended up getting drowned in complaints and rants about Sonic's friends. That's why the newer titles have only focused on him. We've only been lucky to see characters like Knuckles even get a cameo. It's just been Sonic, Tails, and Eggman for the most part.

With proper direction that might actually be a stroke of genius since it not only manages to handle the overall cumbersome tone of the game in an entertaining fashion, but also addresses the whole theme of Shadow grasping his identity is more than what others think of him.
Shadow realizing he doesn't need to be defined by anything aside from himself was sort of the point of the game. Well, should have been, since it sort of tries to achieve something along the lines of recognizing independence in the face of adversity due to conflict of identity but misses the mark among all the other odd on-goings around Shadow. Which some could say helps the atmosphere of confusion, but no. No. GUN, Eggman and the Dindu Aliens all having their own agenda is fine, all having past and present ties to Shadow they try to tie into the game's levels and format turned into a tangled mess.
Still, I agree it could have been an interesting different angle if handled well. In fact I think to help fans get a taste of the spectrum of characters without throwing all the paint into one bucket the Sonic series could benefit from the occasional spinoff like how Tails, Knuckles and Shadow have had, unfortunately short of Tails most other cases had undesirable results which have caused apprehension.
It's a shame really, that lack of acceptable room to develop outside or in the series has, in my opinion, resulted in things like Silver's gameplay and Werehog were they try an unfitting compromise. Had they just made a psychic physics engine playground designed around Silver separate from Sonic for example it might have turned out fine, putting it into an already volatile mix didn't.
That's really the problem with the series, not the destination but the direction.

When I think about Sonic 2006, I get a little sad. This game should have been great. This game should have been the new face of the franchise. This game should have taken the franchise to new heights.
I fucking love the design of the Egg Wyvern, and that boss theme, fucking fantastic. It makes me feel a little sad thinking about some of the great music the game had that are trapped in this game.
It makes me kind of sad that some of the amazing setpieces in this game should have worked fantastically.
Sonic running through a water logged ancient kingdom. Sonic running through a city that is burning to the ground. Outrunning a massive firestorm.
But make no mistake, this game is a fucking travesty. The game simply wasn't finished, and the plot? The plot is so terrible that people actually too notice of a plot in a Sonic game enough to call it a detriment.
It's laden with plotholes, Sonic is a trite bland boring hero, and his part in "the story" is trying to save a princess like Mario. He gets trounced by Silver twice and never gets one up over on him, and even gets killed. They don't even bother to do something with Princess Elise and try to make her bossy or outgoing or something like that. There are plenty of ways to do a "girl is influenced by Sonic" plot, and they chose the worst possible way.
This game is the textbook example of "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" This game nearly killed the franchise. Other series have died on games aren't even 25% as bad as this one.
I still like the Sanic to this very day, and I too hate it when every moron think they're funny by pointing out the lesser portions of the fanbase.
