Mechanically it's very different than TF2, a major reason why is that it places equal importance on your FPS skills as it does ability usage. Overall each character isn't just using a different type of gun but in most cases entirely different weapons that you can't really compare to anyone else. The game modes are similar but gameplay is not, every character was designed to embody a specific FPS game/weapon/character so it's pretty diverse.
I like how it plays but it's really the people playing it and the company that runs it that will drag down the experience.

I like it but there are some problems.
The main one for me is that we're forced to play discrete matches with no option to browse for servers playing particular maps/styles; which also means there aren't servers with regulars you can get to know or drop-in, drop-out style play.
Instead you have to play a match, sit through POTG, commend each other in a 'community' circlejerk, and then get booted off to another server with a new set of randoms on a random map/match type.
Also, there is no CTF, which really seems like a giant oversight.
It isn't really too much like TF2 overall. The abilities, while moba-like, kinda just amount to every character having 2-3 weapons or whatever. hook-shoot with Roadhog instead of puff-chop with pyro.
The ultimate abilities are what counts as they force decisive moments more often. Few of them are as devastating as an ubercharge but they are more frequent and you'll find people trying to be cunning by combing them. Ultimate moves are okay.
Its visually very good. Like TF2, everything is very clear, and you can almost always tell whats going on. The red outline on enemies really is no replacement for enemies that just wear their team color, nice and bright.
TF2-like characters tend to be slightly weaker than their counterparts. Eg, the turret dosent even come close to the Engineer's turret in leathality, and it is all that the dwarf can build. Also, Widow maker always fires tracer rounds to if you miss, you will very likely be made out and blasted which seems a little unfair; the game already has killcam. On top of that you glow bright red so its hard to hide.

As a spectator sport there is too much going on at any given time to really call out plays, ultimates build very quickly, matches go by very fast. Its a very reactive style of spectating rather than a build up.

Every character except torb can be played effectively on attack as long as you know what you are doing. Torb is outclassed by Bastion who can do the same thing, deploy on the payload. Widow when played properly can sit behind the point and clean up anyone who peeks, it's a great way to keep the enemy from simply charging in blindly over and over. Hanzo plays a little closer to the action and so requires your tank and healer to know what they are doing, probably a little less effective than Widow at quick clearing or shutting down a section of the map but his ultimate can make for a great push engine. This isn't to mention both have wallhack abilities that really help.
As always it depends on the map and the rest of your team but if you are setup for it an attack widow or hanzo can be just fine.

Enjoying the testing. King of the Hill mode is pretty intense. They got more balancing passes to do though and they haven't unveiled ranked yet, though they plan on having it.
Even when I get frustrated, I still keep going back to the game. Ranked mode will do a good job of separating the try hards from the casuals though.

I've played a shit ton of it, probably about 100-200 hours by now. It's honestly the most fun I've had gaming in a long time. So far the devs have done a really good job of being honest about what's going on and using feedback from the testers to make decent balance decisions.
I'd still like to see Hanzo and Widow changed, because I hate Hanzo's low effort full damage arrows and the fact that Widow body shots do so much damage when she's meant to be headshotting.
The game can be frustrating because pubs simply don't play what's needed on the team, and people don't get the necessity to hero switch very often.
When you play with a couple of friends or get a decent team it is an absolute blast. I feel like it won't make the impact Blizzard want it to but it will still have a pretty decent following.
As for it's esports scene, that's a joke at the moment. The problem is that there's not really any assigned rules or anything for games, so it's common to see the same few heroes over and over again which is just boring. The infrastructure in place for spectating is frankly shit at the moment, it's not like games like Dota or League where watching it is easy and the interface doesn't get in the way. It's harder to make what's going on exciting in an FPS because it's hard to show everything going on in a teamfight, and it's easy to miss small but important plays.
All in all, I feel like a lot of /v/ hates on it for being a Blizzard game. I haven't enjoyed myself this much in years.

My games are mostly against the comp and streamer groups when I play at night, it's not exactly enjoyable to face a team of 6 people (who happen to be in the level 150-300+ range) with a team including sub level 20's trying to play attack hanzo.
I know where my skill level is at, I'm no CS pro but I'm certainly no worse off than the people I'm matched against. The issue is as stated I get people who clearly aren't on the level of the rest of the lobby and it drags everything down. What makes this worse is that new/bad players refuse to play anything but DPS roles and love to push too far and feed kills. While there isn't any money system or anything a free kill means you're down a man and open to be rushed while on the defensive side.

TF2 comp is on its last legs, most of the pros don't get anything out of playing it anymore and are already planning to jump ship to overwatch. If you played since right before the official release you'll have seen the player-count tracker in the general channel everytime you logged in. It was usually around 3-7k players. That feature was removed.
If you actually believe Blizzard's numbers for HotS playerbase are the same as Battle.net accounts with HotS in them, then you're fucking RETARDED. You also have to realize since the game is free and built into the client, that a lot of people probably installed and played a few matches so they numbers would be skewed anyway.
As for Dota 2, look at Steam's top played games. Look at the readily available statistics, look at the games played on Dotabuff, look at the amount of viewers it gets during tournaments, including russia and china, which has passed 1million every TI. Take note of the fact that it's currently at its highest peak right now.
