I liked Wipeout on the original Playstation.
Am I too old for /v/?
>>331449752
What's the best modern PC racing gaming with arcadey elements? I'm chomping at the bit to play some Forza on PC (assuming they don't fuck it up for us).
I've played some Codemaster sims and they bored the fuck out of me so no simulators please.
This will never be surpassed
>>331453061
Burnout Paradise.
And no, 7 years is not old enough.
Also
>Codemasters
>simulation
They make good arcadey pseudosims, but the never ever did a proper simulation game.
GOAT
>>331453061
>codemasters
>sims
>>331453382
I know they aren't actually simulators, but they straddle the line closer than most so I probably wouldn't care for the more realistic kind of games.
Also, I probably should like Burnout Paradise more than I do, but I don't. I hate that game. I played the shit out of Burnout 3 and Revenge and hated Paradise's open nature. Fast driving is great when the courses are linear, but I kept going crosseyed trying to manage the map and my driving in Paradise. Not to mention taking one wrong turn and fucking over the entire race.
>>331453938
Emulate ridge racer type 4
>>331453938
Midnight Club told me how not to fuck up the no-course races.
'Cause completing them was necessary at some point, and until you git gud, you won't pass.
>>331454143
Is the one on Steam or 3DS any good?
>>331454306
I actually played a shitload of 3 back in the day and enjoyed it. Played Midtown Madness 3 as well. Both of those games didn't have the fucking speed of Burnout and had much better and open roads so fucking up in one turn wasn't as big of an issue.
>>331453938
Don't be worried, Burnout Paradise was a disappointment to us all.
>>331454581
Burnout's cars aren't even that fast, until the last tier, but you're supposed to get used to the speeding by that time.
>>331454975
When you have to micromanage with a shitty map in the corner of the screen they sure are. I don't want to spend half of my attention of a racing game on a crappy minimap. Midnight Club did it right by lighting flares so you could see where you were going without relying on a map all the time.
Shit, I'd be happy if they would have just placed arrow barriers when races started.
>>331455345
Guess I am a special kind of autist, because I actually bothered learning the map.
>>331455345
It's only inconvenient at first, Burnout Paradise only has like five "courses" that you re-do over and over and they're mostly straightforward so you eventually memorize them. And that's only for races, there's other modes where you just drive wherever.
>>331455345
>half of my attention
you learn the track by just playing it, it's only little difficult on start and even then you can just pay notice to blinkers
>>331455345
paradise's main draw was the online, lots of fucking around you could do
thats dead now I'm pretty sure thoug
>>331455495
Perhaps. I got the game in that EA bundle a while back and I just wasn't blown away by it.
I preferred the variety of tracks in the past games. Also Crash mode.
>>331454581
The 3DS one is amazing. Is one of the best arcade racers I played recently
Just got this on the Gamecube - completely missed it the first time round for some reason, despite being a massive fan of "sim" racing games and them being rare as hens teeth on the GC. Enjoying it so far, though the handling feels odd.

The soundtrack was pretty nice too
>>331458250
This t︂b︂︂h f︂︂a︂m, the only thing I don't really like is the soundtrack.
The open world didn't add anything good to Paradise. And just to nitpick, the pc version of Paradise has a 60fps lock, which i can usually live with but Burnout would really benefit from 144.
>>331449752
Okay. This is the bestand by that I mean my personal favouriteracing game.

>>331460617

>>331461229

>>331458209
I never got the drifting right in this game. Is it even possible to properly drift arround a turn without loosing almost all of your speed?
Yakuza 5 was a better Initial D game than the actual Initial D game
>>331457625
I prefer pic related honestly. The first one had better car handling, but this one has a much better sense of speed.
Scramble is just straight up bullshit doe.
>>331460919

There was traffic checking in Burnout 3.
I haven't owned a racing game since Gran Turismo 4 on ps2, I have a PS4 now and am looking to get back into it. Until the new Gran Turismo comes out, which is better between Driveclub and Project Cars? I'm not super concerned about absolute simulation, but more just overall enjoyment, graphics, different modes, etc
>>331460617

There was this one racing game I played on the dreamcast that was amazing when I was young. The only two things I remember about it was there was a level with a tornado(?) and another level where you went through a lave filled cave.
such a fun game
>we will never see a remake of this
>>331461725
you can only check other racers in 3, colliding with same direction traffic is a crash
>>331461947
I'm actually hyped anyway, but I'm waiting to see how it pans out. The online community for 2 is incredibly tiny after those expansions split the user base three ways. If the PC Version isn't overly gimped at least you can have all of the environments for 40 bucks.

>>331464009
trends killed NFS, supercar fest was ok, until on 4 they introduced upgrades, then the promise of "motor city" (hot rod 3) and the detailed parts as porsche 2000, then FnF... and you know the rest.
>>331458958

That game was a technical marvel on the C64. Just the physics were built around the low framerate, you were kinda magnetically attached to the surface and you nudged the car left/right rather than straight up turning.

I'm extremely sad that racing games with crazy physics are dead now.
Ridge Racer 7,
Burnout 3,
need for speed most wanted.
I lived that crazy shit but now the ps4 is only full of crap.
I recently got this f-zero WiiU game which is alright.
It's on the newer side of things, but fuck I miss Motorstorm as a series.
Drifting, smashing, boost mechanic with engine heat, split-screen multi w/ AI racers. It had everything.
>>331465394
>n NFS 2 you have description / showcase like this for every car
NFS 3 and 4, too, although NFS2 is the only one with those awesome car-specific music tracks.
Old NFS was just as much about the cars themselves as it was the racing and I miss that.
>>331467582
Rush 2049's tracks had so many shortcuts too. Some of which are difficult to do flawlessly but were required to beat the AI sometimes. God I loved that game.
>>331469446

>Wipeout
My neagra. The only thing I remember aside from clocking in at 500+ kilometer an hour in the races was that OST that cemented my love for the genre. Took about 8 or so years before I realized exactly what it was that I was listening too. Weeks would be spent racing around the tracks hyper speed while those tracks play in the background.

Fuck, I remember being hyped for that game before release. Then it got delayed, then I don't think I even noticed when it did come out. It sank completely without trace, just like you said.

They said they are building the car models to be interchangeable between the series and the whole rebuild from F5 on was so they could take them to 4K quality (AKA "Forzavista"). I don't think Horizon 3 would have as many problems as Horizon 2 when they were still waiting on Turn 10 to finish the cars. There's something like 500 Forzavista class cars for them to pick from now. Though to Turn 10's credit they have the majority of weeb meme cars and legend cars in so you wonder what they could put in in Japanese car history (Maybe put back in the Tommy Kaira? Or the Castrol TOMS Celica?)
We're not getting full fat F6 as Greenwalt said they didn't want to do a full F6 port because they want to go into FM7 fully PC ready and wanted to do F6 Apex as a tech demo to get a feel for what PC players want (WHEEL SUPPORT).
I'd imagine they are going to finally do some dynamic TOD and weather for the next one. Especially as we might have that upgraded xbone by the time FM7 comes out.

I played for a little while before it closed. The grind was real, as >>331470927 said, and the physics were very simple but not at all bad- very Trackmaniaesque, to coin a word. More importantly, no constant-regen nitrous and easymode one-button-handbrake-drifting like in most other modern NFS games, all the ebrake did was grind you to a halt and make you lose.
It was shit but also easy to win at because no one could drive for shit.
For all its faults, it was also pretty cool seeing the Most Wanted and Carbon maps with modern graphics and seeing how they reworked them to change a few streets and get rid of the old Autozone, Motorola, etc tie-in buildings and ads.

Alternatively, check out shift 2 and project cars, although for some reason i didn't have as much fun with those. Even though they both feel more polished than AC, i like the way AC drives.
Be sure to alter your steering sensitivity if using a controller (just google Assetto corsa controller settings, it's easy).

How can you say that at all, seriously? PS1 and PC NFS3 are pretty on par with each other, but PC NFS4 has way more features than PS1, doesn't run like shit, includes all the tracks from NFS3, is open to modding, still has working online play, damage modeling, and much better physics.
>>331482785
It does not use money or prize winnings of any kind, so it's not like forza or GT. You have access to all cars and tracks instantly and you can practice, race, take part in special challenges, or work your way up the career mode.
It is not as polished as a big game like forza or GT, but it can easily be modded and the driving is top notch. To add cars and tracks that others have made you literally extract to .../assettocorsa/cars(or tracks) and it shows up in game perfectly.

The tracks that are based on real life tracks tend to be better than tracks that people just come up with on their own, probably because the real life tracks are ripped from other games and converted.
There is also a sweetfx mod that makes the game look more pretty.

Sold!
In all honesty, I'd love to do some F1 and open wheel racing in this. Looks like the game has a nice sense of speed.

Also, to add, the game is brutally realistic without assists on, but the traction control and stability control are controllable in 1% increments, so you can really dial in just how difficult you want the game to be.
Also the AI difficulty can be scaled from 100% (pretty hard but not impossible) to like 80% (easier than beating up a small child)

That mod is fucking bonkers. You can max it out on that top speed track (mod). I got it up to 350mph on the nurburgring but the bumpiness caused a horrific crash. lol

Can I tune it to be a bit more arcadey so I can play with a controller?
>>331484887
I run speed sensitivity 15%, steering speed 8% (in advanced), gamma 2.5 (advanced), filter .75 (advanced) and dead zone .02 (advanced) and it handles very well. It's much easier than the stock xbone controller settings.
It is possible to understeer (by turning the steering wheel too far) with my settings, but you can still go like 80%-90% left or right with the stick before you start to slide off the track.
I'm sure you could eliminate the ability to turn the wheel too far somehow, but i kinda like having to control my steering somewhat.

Let me guess, you don't consider racing sims to be actual racing games.

Mah nig.
Top fucking tier of racing right there. Perhaps not the best but it's among them.

Kinda sad that a lot of the "best looking cars on PS3" use the same models from GT4
